Pastor’s Message You may have noticed the display at church highlighting the proposed Permanent Supportive Housing project. At a very high level, the display de-scribes how the project has come into being and there are images of what the proposed facility would look like. I hope you get a chance to look it over soon.

I also want to outline for the congregation where we are at in the pro-cess today. Over the summer and early months of this fall, our partners at the YWCA have been busy putting together all of the necessary funding applications for the project. With all of the applications now submitted, we are in a holding pattern. We will hear whether or not the funding for the $7.8 million project is awarded beginning in December of this year.

If funding is awarded, LCC will have the opportunity to have further dis-cussion and a formal vote on the project most likely in January. Without the

support of the congregation, the project cannot move forward. We, the people of LCC, get final say as to what happens with the land owned by the community. Please join with me in praying that God’s Holy Spirit would continue to guide our discernment.

Back in the spring, I shared with the congregation what we knew about the partnership at that time, as well as a list of particulars about a land lease that we did not yet know. Now, many of those particulars have been ironed out by the church’s YW project team and approved by the church coun-cil. In order to give the community time to inwardly digest, discuss, and discern the project’s future, I am sharing as much as we can here now.

Under the proposed lease agreement, the land would be leased to an affiliate organization of the YWCA formed specifically for this supportive housing project. The lease would be for 65 years. All of the expenses that the church currently pays as a result of owning the property (special assessment taxes, law care, etc.) and any future expenses as a result of the housing facility (taxes, improvements, maintenance, upkeep, etc.) would be paid by the YWCA. LCC would receive an initial payment for the amount of $500,000.00 when the lease begins. If the YWCA has success in its program and would seek to extend or alter the lease, the partners can renegotiate the lease including additional compen-sation to LCC.

We have built into the proposed lease some protections that were important to the church. These include restrictions on the use of the property and transferability, the exterior design, and fu-ture exterior changes to the building. These restrictions are intended to empower leaders in the fu-ture and to allow the church to be a partner in making future decisions that would impact our faith community and neighborhood.

All-in-all, this project has been and continues to be an amazing partnership of shared vision for the sake of women and children having a home, a safe place to begin rebuilding their lives. One thing I know is certain, if the project moves forward with funding and support of the LCC community, there are decades of amazing ways we can be a blessing to our new neighbors AND decades of amaz-ing ways our new neighbors will be a blessing to us. We do not always get a chance to see God’s king-dom being built right in our midst, but when we do, our hearts cannot help being filled with joy.

If you have any questions, any concerns, any thoughts about anything related to this project, please do not hesitate to give me a call, send an email, or stop by the church office.

Peace & Joy ~ Pastor Joel
