publisher’s note

The winter is finally thawing and it’s time

to start celebrating the renewal of nature.

In the age of online booking sites, why hasn’t the travel agent become extinct? Travel agents save you time, make travel less stressful and are your safety net in case of mishaps. But more importantly, travel agents -- now known as travel consultants -- provide personal services, knowledge and first-hand travel experience you just can’t get on line.

If you enjoy researching travel online, go right ahead but remem-ber the internet doesn’t know you. Most online information is advertising designed to convince you to buy. If you don’t have the time to perform the necessary due diligence, you are better off seeking the advice of a travel consultant who knows you and the destination. Put simply, travel consultants know more about travel than you do. They are well-trained, well-traveled profes-sionals who spend every day researching the best possible vaca-tion options for their clients. Instead of anonymous comments on Trip-Advisor or social media, get insider tips and professional ad-vice from someone with the education and personal experience to guide your vacation decisions in a way that provides you with the best vacation possible for you and your hard-earned investment.

Travel is personal -- you are fulfilling dreams and dreams vary. A travel consultant helps you clarify what you need to make your travel dreams come true. All of those resorts, cruises and tours online are perfect for someone … but maybe not you. For ex-ample, a cruise line web tours online are perfect for someone but maybe not you. For example, a cruise line website won’t tell you that its competitor is better suited to your personality and life-style. Travel consultants sell all the cruise lines, so they focus on ensuring that you are matched with your dream cruise.

A good travel consultant can get you more vacation for your money. They have access to exclusive deals and will find the best products for the best value to fit your unique vacation dreams. Their focus will be on value rather than on cutting corners to get the cheapest price available. The most expensive vacation you will ever take is the nightmare that fulfilled none of your dreams. Plus, travel consultants often have unique access to perks -- like spa credit, shipboard credits and other complimentary ameni-

ties. Your travel consultant has more leverage than you do if things go awry -- they spend years developing long-term relation-ships with travel suppliers who understand how important their repeat business is.

In short, if you have never visited a travel consultant, you are missing out on a chance to save time and hassles and aggrava-tion — and often, money as well. Travel consultants believe that travel should be one of life’s great delights and it is their job to focus on you and ensure that your travel dreams come true.

W e had the opportunity to interview Roger about his company and what makes Sleep Doctor differ-

ent. Twenty-five years ago, Roger worked in retail business and wasn’t really happy with certain situations that he couldn’t control. He then had an idea to go out on a limb, create a business plan where he could direct and guide others on the changes he wanted to make at his current employer. Like, so many of us do, when something new comes along, his wife, Pam, threw caution to the wind and said, “No,” at first. But, over time with a little persistence, Roger was able to make his vision a reality. Sleep Doctor is a Grand Rapids based company, has 18 stores across the state and employs 60 great individuals. “We have mattresses for all customer needs and make the experience simple and fun,” Said Wardell. When asked what he would like the residents of Crystal Springs to know, he replied, “A lot of people think that we are a national company and that’s not the case -- we are a Grand Rapids based company.” Roger and the Sleep doctor stores also give back to the community in so many ways. With the water cri-sis still in Flint, the trucks have brought some much needed water to that area and continues to haul water donations on a weekly basis. “Anyone is welcome to drop off cases of water at the stores

anytime … we get it where it needs to go.” Roger quietly does kind deeds all of the time and believes that we are all “Blessed to be a blessing.” He has donated mattresses to refugees in poverty and is part of several nonprofits in the area. Some of them include, Conquers prison ministry and “Feats of strength” -- an anti-drug and anti-bullying group. He is also an advanced board member for Afterward Music Ministry. He and his family are members of Resurrection Life Church and have lived in Crystal Springs on Old lantern for 12 years. To-gether they have three grown children -- Larisa, Chip and Alaina -- all of which attended Kentwood schools. The couple also owns one fancy canine, named Jasmine, a long-haired, mini doxie. In his spare time, Roger loves to have fun with his drag racing car and if he is not doing that, he is probably on any given golf course because he loves to golf. Thank you, Roger, for sharing your story with Life on the Course readers. If you are a business owner and would like to share your story with us, please contact me at [email protected]

business beat

On February 6, I was invited by Bryant Real Estate Group, to attend the Kentwood education foundation third annual Black and Red Gala at Noto’s Italian Restau-rant. Members from the commu-nity, as well as important business partners and dignitaries attended the event to show their support. Guests that attended the event were asked to wear Black and Red evening attire. The evening started off with a warm social hour that was celebrated with a Jazz band in the dining area. During the social, Kentwood students showcased im-portant projects from the year that were funded by the foundation. An introduction of the foundation and the wonderful projects it has

helped in support to the schools of Kentwood was given by Jim Swobo-da, followed by a group of highly-intelligent Kentwood students debating politics on some of our world’s most challenging problems. It was inspiring for all in the room to watch these students and their excitement as they are heading to Washington DC to be involved in de-bates. After dinner was served to the guests, awards were given to some of Kentwood’s finest graduates. TV per-sonality, Rachel Ruiz, class of 1990, was a recipient of the O.A.K.S award. (Outstanding Alumni of Kentwood Schools Award). In her acceptance speech she was very thankful that Kentwood provided her with great roots and a firm foundation to build

her life and career. Pepinos owner, Jason Allard, was the recipient of the Distinguished Service award. Jason and Pepinos have been very involved with the Kentwood school district since the restaurant started six years ago. They have donated much needed pizzas and food for various events. Jason Allard, also has given many of the Kentwood students their first opportunity at employment. He, his wife (who is also a Kentwood teacher) and his business go above and beyond to support the district. Ken Wat-kins, class of 1981, and president of Architectural concepts also accepted the O.A.K.S award. Ken provides Kentwood students with countless number of job shadows and is a big supporter of the high school. Ken,

also, is a board member at Cornerstone Church and is founder of a nonprofit called Zoe waters, a mission focused on sharing good news in remote areas of Kenya, to help provide clean water. Ken and his wife, Shelly, also have two children who are also graduates of Kentwood. One other recipient of the Oaks award was Scott Baker, the president and CEO of National Nail. A 100% employee-owned building materials company headquartered in Grand Rapids, MI. Scott reflected on his values of living in the Kentwood district in his youth as “My Kentwood” -- he appreci-ated the fact that he was given the experience to grow up with so many of his friends and neighbors of whom he still is in contact with today. Scott is a recent cancer survivor and noted that if he were to be opened up, he would be “Black and Red” because, again, he is “Kentwood.” The evening concluded with the KEF thanks and appreciation. It was a terrific night for all involved!

As the resident Realtor in Crystal Springs, I talk with many resi-dents here about what they should or should not do when they are thinking of selling. The age of most of the homes here in Crystal Springs are getting to the point or past the point where there is quite a bit of remodeling that should take place. In these cases, the most important thing to consider is are they doing it for themselves to enjoy or for the next buyer? It’s a simple question that can go a long way in helping a home owner decide whether or not to do that updating that they have been considering. A good follow up question is how long do you plan on staying in the home. If less than two or three years, then less is more. Meaning that it’s not the time to necessarily do that complete kitchen remodel as the leading industry experts say that, at best, they will only recoup approxi-mately 75% of the investment during resale. This goes for just about everything in the home. Very few things get a home owner back dollar-for-dollar or more on the investment. It’s really like planting a tree. The best time to do a major remodel is five to 10 years ago. That way the home owner will be able to enjoy the fruits of their la-bor for some time and then be able to recoup most of the investment when they sell it years down road. It’s a tricky balance, however. Most interior designers agree that kitchens and baths that are near-ing the age of 15 years old, are outdated and need to be remodeled. If you have passed the time that a remodel wouldn’t be conducive to your bottom line, there’s still hope. With the help of a good realtor and a good interior designer, they can make suggestions to bring that old and tired décor into this era with simple tips and some light remodeling that will make a world of difference. For instance, with an outdated kitchen with light oak cabinetry, Rustoleum makes a product that you can literally transform them into looking like brand new cabinets with a completely different color and it only costs about $70. Then add a new counter top, new hardware and faucet to finish off the look of your new space. Add in some fresh paint throughout the home where needed, a good thorough cleaning and a little staging and you are well on your way to being able to get the most amount of money possible with a small investment of time and money. Another thing that shouldn’t be ignored that has a great impact on value and the buyers first impression is the front of the home. Be sure to clean up the landscaping, freshen up the paint on the front porch and door. There’s a lot of information on the internet of what to do and what not to do that it can be overwhelm-ing. If you’re in need of assistance and ideas, I would suggest calling a local realtor who can put you in touch with an interior designer that specializes in getting homes ready to sell in our market, who can meet with you in person and provide you with their expertise. These professionals know what the current trends are and what is going to get you the most bang for your buck, and what to stay away from and are an invaluable asset to help get a home ready to sell or to continue to live in for years to come.

I had the chance to Meet Kylee Younce and her adorable daugh-ter, Byrnn, last month. This is one very busy family and we are very thankful she took the time out for the interview!

When asked what are your favorite activities or Hobbies? “We love to go on vacations! We enjoy trying new restaurants in the area, attending sporting events and concerts, playing outside as a family, taking bike rides, entertaining friends and family.” The Younce family are members of the pool and the golf club at Stone-

family spotlight meet the Younces

water. We enjoy going to the pool with neighbors and friends, participating in golf events. Brett and Kylee are both participants of Men’s & Women’s golf leagues.

The family loves trying new restaurants around the Grand Rap-ids area. A couple of our favorites are The Old Goat and Lindo Mexico. When asked what they like to do for vacations, “We try to visit Disney World every year. We also enjoy Las Vegas and anywhere warm during the cold Michigan winters! Hawaii was one of our favorite vacations. We also enjoy camping! We have a group of friends that goes camping up north each summer.” So what are their favorite sports teams? “Go Blue! We enjoy watch-ing all sports, we are big Michigan fans, love the Tigers and are still committed to the Detroit Lions.”

The Younces are huge Jimmy Buffett fans, kids included! They con-sider themselves parrot heads and try to attend one to two concerts each year. “We recently finished our basement in a Jimmy Buffett theme.” Said Kylee. They also love The Zac Brown Band. Brett is the cook in this family, he loves to grill on his Big Green Egg! You’ll catch him most summer weekends grilling up a brisket, pork shoulder or steak. Lots of yummy grill smoke coming from our house!

Do you have any family traditions? “We are very close to our immediate family. All of our (Brett and Kylee’s) siblings live in the Grand Rapids area. Brett’s parents live about an hour south but stay with us every other weekend and Kylee’s parents live in the neighborhood. We feel very fortunate to be able to host many family dinners and gatherings!!”

Brett and Kylee met while working at State Farm and attending Western Michigan University

Brett is from Bronson, MI, and Kylee grew up in Battle Creek, MI. We both moved out of state for a short while after college and planting our roots in Caledonia in 2011.

They have lived in Crystal Springs since October of 2011. When asked, what do you like to do to relax? “We have a difficult time sitting around. We love to entertain. If we don’t have anything going on, we create it!” How are you involved in the community? Kylee volunteers at the kid’s school and Brett is a member of the Cutlerville cham-ber of commerce, coaches little league baseball and flag football. Bryce plays baseball, Upward Basketball and golf; Kolin plays baseball, Upward Basketball and Upward flag football; Brynn is just starting out in gymnastics.

When asked what is your favorite part about living in your neighborhood? “We love the people! We have felt at home since the day we moved in and our next door neighbor invited us to a Halloween party. We organized a bi-weekly pink flamingo party … if the flamingo is in your yard, you host the Friday happy hour! The people here are the best”

Thanks again, Kylee & the Younce family! I look forward to stopping by a flamingo cocktail hour this summer!

I grew up in the Kentwood area and graduated from EKHS and with the exception of joining the service in 1983, have always been a west Michigan resident. I began my automotive career and a state certified mechanic while still in high school. The Army gave me some diesel training working on tanks and APC’s. After the service my family and I returned

to west Michigan and I began my career as an auto technician at a local dealership. That trend continued until 2010 when I became employed at Dutton Automotive. I quickly transitioned from shop work to running the front end and the day-to-day operations of the shop.

Dutton Automotive is a family-owned business that was started in 1975 by Bern and Sharon Bultman who are still part of our crew in just a lesser capacity. The Plan on the horizon for myself is to soon purchase the business and continue and expand on the honest, quality automotive repair that Dutton Automotive has been known for.

Dutton Automotive, I believe, is a very unique auto repair facility as we operate as a family and our customers are treated with a very personal atten-tion that seems to be a lost art when we look at the world around us. Our processes and procedures along with our quality NAPA parts and family of benefits sets us apart from the box stores and most other auto repair facilities. We are also a company that wholly operates on our Christian morals and values. We realize that life is happening to our customer’s every day and sometimes a broken down

vehicle is a great opportunity to shine love and compassion on other aspects of their lives.

Here at Dutton Automotive, we stay on the very edge of automotive technology, training and in-formation. The cars of today are not your grand-father’s Oldsmobile -- to coin a phrase -- and need specific maintenance and repairs. We use only quality OEM equivalent parts and perform vehicle service at the highest level of expertise. Again, I believe it is the personal attention and care given to each and every person -- treated more like family and friends than customers -- that makes us very unique and stand out in a sometimes very gray industry.

Another quality of Dutton Automotive is our com-munity involvement, benevolent hearts and mission mindedness. We partner with local schools, church-

es, and community groups to not only offer automotive repair assistance to those in need but partner with them in their activities as well. We are always on the lookout to serve our local community and extend ourselves too many faith-based organizations and mis-sion groups to help them in their goals.

Recently, we, as a shop, went to Mexico together on a mission trip and helped build houses for the residents of Matamoros. This was not only a great team-building experience but the servanthood aspects of missions trips is what we are all about at the foundation. I can say first hand that the mission experience was life altering. We have all committed to continuing the tradition of doing this outreach together … truly an inspirational story. Thank you, Chris and Dutton Automotive, for sharing your story!

On February 11 members of the Crystal Springs com-munity were invited to take part in our Kids and Cookies valentine event.

Guests were given the royal treatment by Brand Manager and head baker, Marjorie Steele. Bekins, which is located over on 28th street near Cascade, has the most amazing appliances for those needing an upgrade or wanting to revamp an entire home. On this special evening, guests were invited to learn in the gor-geous facilities working kitchen. Kids started the evening off by frosting heart-shaped sugar cookies. Adults and kids enjoyed the great tastes of these fine and popular treats. Another special highlight taught was learning how to make the perfect stained glass cookie, followed by making the perfect Biscotti drizzled with chocolate sauce. The Wolf series convection oven and cooktop were used to create all of the perfect treats. If you have not had a chance to visit Bekin yet, it is highly recommended. The company’s background is quite impressive and helps keep your dollars local to support Michigan businesses. In October 1975, Harvey Bekins used his 27 years of experience of appliance repair to found his own repair business: Bekins Appliance Repair. The garage-based business valued and operated around a few simple principles: family, excellent service and integrity. In a few short years, the repair business flourished enough for Harvey to expand Bekins Appliance Repair into a full appliance retail store. Through unparalleled customer service and continued investment in the local community, Bekins Appliance continued

to grow and expand and under the ownership of Harvey Bekins’ son, Scott Bekins, Bekins Appliance today has become the #1 electronics integrator in the state of Michigan with a presence in Grand Rapids, Grand Haven and Coopersville. In fall 2015, Bekins also brought a well-loved name back to the West Michigan com-munity by reviving Classic Stereo as the newest member of the Bekins family. Next to Bekins Grand Rapids showroom on 28th Street, Classic Stereo is a haven for media lovers with two rooms featuring 7.4.4 Dolby Atmos surround sound, a JBL Synthesis home theater and audio products ranging from entry level headphones and wireless speakers to whole home audio systems. Kids and adults were given a tour in the surround sound and home theater room. "Integrity-based customer service is at the heart of what we here at Bekins do. From the quality of the appliance and electronics brands we carry in our showroom, to careful attention to each interac-tion we have with our customer, we are deeply committed to giving customers the best experience, the best product and the best value every step of the way." Thank you, Marjorie Steele and Bekins, for teaching everyone that attended great ways to create perfect treats and sending everyone home with goodies to share with their families. Everyone had a great evening

Thank you, Bryant Mitchel and Darren DeFever, for organizing the event. I think most of us have heard of Kids Food Basket

but I’d go into a little more detail on what it’s all about.

First of all, if you haven’t heard about or been lucky enough to meet Mary Kathleen Hoodhood, the founder of Kids Food Basket, you are missing out on an example of true goodness, generosity and love for kids, her family and friends. Mary and

We hope many of you joined in on the Kids Food Basket Food Drive on March 12 at Firerock Grill.

I went to high school together and I am so proud of her and amazed at what she has accomplished with this service. I wish her and her husband, Jeff, continued blessings for their service to the community.

Did you know that a startling one in five children are affected by hunger in West Michigan? When it started over 10 years ago, Kids Food Basket served 125 kids a day. Now Sack Suppers go home with nearly 7,500 kids at 39 schools in the Grand Rapids area, Muskegon and Holland. Sack Suppers make sure that lunch wasn’t the last meal of the kid’s day. Think about that. Most of us can’t even imagine going to bed hungry!

So what can you do to help? Give your time: If you have just one to two hours a week or even a month, you can help to prepare or pack the meals at 2055 Oak Industrial Dr. in Grand Rapids. It’s about a 20 minute drive from Crystal Springs just east of the Medical Mile, near Fuller. It’s fun -- you can meet new friends and leave feeling a bit happier and so very grateful for what you have.

If you like to drive, like I do, you can deliver sack suppers to schools. When schools not in session they have “summer sites” for drop off.

Have fun with your kids and decorate white or brown extra-large bags at home. You can find them in large quantities at Costco, Sam’s or GFS. Color them with Easter eggs, Spring Themes, Min-ions or whatever will bring a smile to the face to these kids. Tell your kids what they are for -- it’s a life lesson they will remember.

Donate money you can donate right online and make it a one-time gift or make it a monthly gift in whatever amount you would like. It all adds up.

For more information, visit: KidsFoodBasket.org, or call them at 616.235.4532. They also have a Facebook Page to follow.

That’s why it’s our perfect choice for the April Home Of The Month. Located at 7509 Crystal View Dr., it has an open-floor plan in a palette of soft beiges and creams. Lynne’s love of nature shines through with wood floors, soft lighting, beach glass, stones and an array of family photos in natural settings. There is a lovely corner sitting room with windows looking into the pines and a setting for the birds that she loves to feed. The master suite has a second fireplace, windows overlooking the course, the sixth green and the seventh tee-box. Mike is Department Chair of Marketing at Davenport University and Lynne is a retired teacher from Southwood Elementary. Also in the household is Dorothy, their very large and happy goldfish. Daughter Megan also lives in Crystal Springs with grandchildren, Alex and Casey. Follow Robbie and I on www.2RealEstateAgentsAndACity.com.

Spring is the perfect season to refresh and update the style of your home. 2016 brings with it many exciting ideas and creative liber-ties. Designer Jonathan Adler sums it up perfectly, saying “We live in an anything-goes world where it’s okay to mix high with low, mid-century with minimalist modern, colors, patterns and every-thing in between. The best trend I’m seeing is people forgetting about the ‘rules’ and loving what they love unapologetically.”

Color of the YearEach year, Pantone releases a Color of the Year, which influences fashion and design trends in a major way. Leatrice Eiseman, Ex-ecutive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, best describes the color pair of 2016, saying “joined together, Rose Quartz and Seren-

ity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness, as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.”

Eclectic KitchensThe kitchen, often referred to as the heart of the home, has become a blank canvas for showcasing personal style. Black stainless steel appliances are an increasingly popular alternative to the more traditional stainless options. Mismatched upper and lower cabinets are a wonderful way to incorporate various paints, stains and finishes. Countertops made of concrete, recycled glass or wood add texture and individuality.

Formal SpacesIn an intentional effort to be more present, many are opting to turn off the television in favor of tech-less living rooms. Creating spaces for conversation and relaxation is becoming increasingly more important. For the same reason, formal dining rooms are making a comeback. Fireplaces (both traditional wood-burning and more sleek, electric versions) will be focal points for many of these formal spaces.

Bathroom RetreatsTo many, the bathroom is becoming just as much about luxury as it is function. Heated flooring, steam showers and towel warmers create a relaxing environment. The bidet, a sanitation staple in many other countries, is gaining popularity in the United States. Adding a lounge seating area to your bathroom can make the space feel more spa-like. Bathroom mirrors that make a state-ment and metallic wallpapers add elegant touches.

Design AccentsAdding some unique accents to your spaces will truly make your house a home. Whether you collect pieces while traveling or cre-ate your own artwork, here are some trending ideas for 2016:• Geometric patterns in tile, fabrics, and artwork• Graphic, colorful throw pillows• Black and white mixed with wood tones• Mixing various shades of gray• Typography art, including signage or marquee lights• Artisan wares, such as woven baskets and tapestries• Framed photography as art, purchased or DIY

healthy living Written by N2 Staff Writer, Elizabeth McCabe

HealthyStaying Through Better Sleep

Sleep. Everybody needs it but no one seems to get quite enough of it. Blame it on the demands of a digital age, the stressors of family life, or simply being overscheduled. Sleep is one of those precious commodities that our bodies need to func-tion at their optimum level. Did you know that sleep helps repair your blood vessels and heart? That night of sleep even helps your brain remember information, as well as work properly.

A lack of sleep can create a multitude of problems, such as mak-ing bad decisions, depression, and can even control one’s emo-tions. An increased risk of obesity and high blood pressure can

also be caused from an ongoing sleep deficiency. Not to mention making one more susceptible to accidents. The Three Mile Island nuclear incident and the Exxon Valdez oil spill were both linked to sleep-deprived workers.

How Can You Sleep Better?According to the National Sleep Council, a bedtime routine is important for establishing a healthy sleep pattern. A routine helps to cue the body that it’s time to settle down and prepare for sleep. Whether that involves meditation, prayer, reading or yoga, getting your body ready for bed is important. Stick to the same bedtime every day for the best results. Create a conducive environment for sleep by banishing cell phones, television, and all electronic devices from your bedroom. Make your room quiet, dark and cool. Don’t overlook a supportive mattress and foundation for a good night of sleep either. Still tossing and turning? Consider a supple-ment like magnesium and calcium, 5-HTP, valerian root or melato-nin. Or sip some hops tea. Hops binds to the melatonin receptors in the brain. In random studies, the effect of hops is equivalent to sleeping medications without the side effects.

Results Of Sleeping BetterSleep can be overlooked in the hustle and bustle of life, but don’t neglect getting your precious ZZZs. Improve your memory through sleep, especially when learning new skills. Reduce inflammation through sleep. According to research, those who sleep less than six hours a night have higher blood levels of inflammatory proteins. Cut your risk of heart disease, arthritis, stroke, diabetes and stroke, as well as premature aging through sleep. Getting enough sleep can even foster creativity, increase athleticism, and help you maintain a healthy weight. According to a study at the University of Chicago, dieters who were well rested lost more fat than those who were sleep deprived (who lost more valuable muscle instead). Sleeping sufficiently will even curb your appetite since the same sectors of the brain control sleep and metabolism. Never underestimate a good night of rest!
