KYOTOSTEAM– InternationalArts× ScienceFestival– 2020-TheBirthOfaNewFestivalinTheYearOfTheTokyoOlympicandParalympicGames
KYOTOSTEAM– InternationalArts× ScienceFestival– isaseriesofArtandCultureeventsthatexplorethecollaborationbetweenartandscience/technology,takingplaceintheOkazakiarea,Kyoto.Focusingontheindispensableaspectsoffutureeducationandindustryinnovation– Science,Technology,Engineering,ArtsandMathematics(theinitiallettersofwhichbuildthewordSTEAM),thisFestival’sgoalistoexplorethepotentialoftheachievementsgainedfromeachfieldofstudy,andtosendoutamessageofanauspiciousfuturesocietyfromKyoto,directlytotheentireworld.
The inauguralversionofthisfestivalistobeheldattheendofMarch2020,whenthecherryblossomswillbeinfullbloom.Allnineprograms,includingvariousworkshops,performingarts,interactiveexperienceprojects,aswellasfoodandmusicprograms,willbeheldforatotalofninedays.
Ofparticularinterestisthe STEAMTHINKING– ArttoCreatetheFutureChallengefromKyoto InternationalArtCompetition:StartUpExhibition.Aprogramtobelaunchedin2020,this internationalartcompetition isanewstyle art competition,whichwill callforentryfrom enterprisesandresearchinstitutionswithexcellenttechnology,aswellasartistswithoriginalideasbothdomesticallyandoverseas,anddisplayandcommendcollaborationartworksof paired artistsandenterprises.Toshowcasethefullpotentialofthiscompetition,itwillbeheldinthesecondflooroftheKyotoCity KYOCERAMuseumofArt,whichisscheduledtore-openatthesametimeafterarenewal.Collaborationartworksbetweenup-and-comingartists,suchasYAGILyota,KUBOGaetan andHAYASHIYuki,andenterprisesandresearchinstitutionsdevelopingtechnologiesandmaterials,andconductingadvancedresearch,suchastheShimadzuCorporation and theCenterforiPS CellResearchandApplication,KyotoUniversity(CiRA),willbeondisplay.

Inaddition,twoPerformingArtsProgramswillbeheldattheadjacentROHMTheatreKyoto.First,thelegendarymultimediaperformancegroupDumbType,whichkeepsattractingtheworld’sattention,willpresenttheirlongawaitednewpieceforthefirsttimeafter18years.Second,thenewperformance ClassicLiteraturexTraditionalArtsxNewTechnology:Shinsarugakuki~cirque dukyoto~,depictingtheoriginalculturalcreationprocessofKyoto,willbeproducedandstagedbytheinheritorsoftraditionalarts,performersfrombothJapanandFrance,cooperatingwithenterprisesofvarioustechnologies.Thisprojectwasinspiredbythe Shinsarugakuki,writtenbyFujiwaraNoAkihira,aJapanesescholarandliteraryartist,morethan1200yearsago.Thisnewperformanceexpressesthehighentertainmentvalueofthepresentdayperformancethatfindsitsrootsinthepopularentertainmentformof Sarugaku.
