Official Kyu and Dan Grading Syllabus

KYOKUSHIN BUDO KARATE SHAKAI INTERNATIONAL worldwide Dojo Syllabus The syllabus provides a learning road map for all students of all grades. Promotions or gradings are held four times a year at which point students who qualify are given the opportunity to attempt a grading. Qualification to grade is based on the following: Time spent on each level (typically a minimum of 3-6 months from 10th to 5th Kyu, 6 months 6th to 1st Kyu) Achieving a minimum 85% attendance from the previous grading (a minimum of 95% attendance is required from 4th Kyu - green belt and above) Competence in all aspects of the syllabus for the level required. Kyu and Dan syllabus includes the following: *Written Examination *Kihon (Basic Strikes, Kicks and Thrusts, Brown Belt applicants must be able to instruct class in these areas) *Ido Geiko (moving techniques) *Sanbon Kumite (three step fighting drills) *Ippon Kumite (one step fighting drills) *Goshin Jitsu (self defence) *Kata (all Kyokushin Kata as per Honbu United Kingdom Instruction) the following minimums are required at each level: Kata Bunkai(application) *Tamashiwari (Board braking) *Kumite (proficiency in fighting for the level required - some Tournament experience required) ALL grading registrations and payments must be taken care of ONE FULL WEEK before the grading. Dan Examinations: Approved candidates shall submit an application and testing fee, two passport photos and fee for the Dan Certificate, Obi and Yudansha Card (Black belt Identity) which will be order from Kyokushin Budo Karate Shakai Honbu,United Kingdom. Official Dan Certificates shall be obtained from Kyokushin Budo Karate Shakai Honbu only, signed by President of the Organisation.

JUNIOR Examination Kyu and Shodan test

*Age requirement for Shodan: 13 years minimum. *Time Requirement for Shodan: 5 years or more consistent training. * JUNIOR Shodan (1st Dan) ranks can only be obtained at age thirteen years old or over.(Age 13th to 15th Years old) Those who are age 16 and over will be considered as adults. To progress to the next Kyu or Dan, the junior students of KYOKUSHIN BUDO KARATE SHAKAI must demonstrate an exceptional skill and flawless execution of Kihon, Kata and Kumite. Beside technical skills the examiner shall also observe the overall development of knowledge of Karate-do. The requirements for children are different than adults. This means the power test and Tameshiwari will be reduced. They will be allowed to do half the amount of adults. Children Tameshwari is mandatory from 2nd Kyu Brown belt examination. The thicknesses of boards are much more less for children than adults. The materials used for Tameshiwari are wooden boards of a Cedar tree (Cryptomeria) Measuring 33 cm wide X 21 cm high and 1.2 cm thick. (13 inch X 8 inch, 0.4 inch) The wide and height is same as adults but only the gage (thickness) will be different for Juniors Tameshiwari.

SANDAN (3rd Dan)

15 years of consistent training. Age 23 Years or over. Need 5 years after taking 2nd Dan qualification. Excellent conditioning exceeding Shodan and Nidan requirements. The applicant shall be an example of Budo both in training and every day activities. Candidate must possess the personality of the Instructor/Dojo operator or Branch chief. Candidate must be active National Judge/Referee before Sandan test. Candidate must be acknowledged as a promoter and / national organizer in his / her own country within KBKS. Must whole heartedly contribute to the Kyokushin Karate-do on many different levels towards the philosophy and future goals of the KYOKUSHIN BUDO KARATE SHAKAI. YONDAN (4th Dan)

Age requirement: Be a minimum of 35 years. 25 years of consistent training .Candidate must receive a recommendation from the President/International Committee of the KBKS permission before taking the examination. Must whole heartedly contribute to the Kyokushin Karate-do on many different levels towards the philosophy and future goals of the KYOKUSHIN BUDO KARATE SHAKAI. Excellent conditioning exceeding Nidan to Sandan requirements. KUMITE: 40 Rounds at 1.5 minutes each (or equivalent)

GODAN (5th Dan) Age requirement: Be a minimum of 45 years. 35 years of consistent training .Candidate must receive a recommendation from the President/International Committee of the KBKS permission before taking the examination. Must whole heartedly contribute to the Kyokushin Karate-do on many different levels towards the philosophy and future goals of the KYOKUSHIN BUDO KARATE SHAKAI. Excellent conditioning exceeding Sandan to Yondan requirements. KUMITE: 50 Rounds(Goju-nin kumite test ) at 1.5 minutes each (or equivalent) ___________________________________________________________________________________ These grades are decided by the President and the International committee having consideration of high level of Karate and have shown a continuous development of their own individuality within the KYOKUSHIN BUDO KARATE SHAKAI. For 4th Dan and above the Technical Dan Promotion Institute will examine the Karate experience, technical level, instructor's level, competitor's experience, experience of instructing, amount of students, level of organizing tournaments, rendering services to the KYOKUSHIN BUDO KARATE SHAKAI. Dan Promotion for 3rd Dan and above are basically only held in Honbu,United Kingdom. Also, Examinations for up to and including 3rd Dan can be held at International Camps or after International Tournaments once a year. A test for 4th Dan can be conducted by Saiko Shihan and two or more recognized Shihans and above delegated by the Technical Dan Promotion Institute.
