In July 2010, Kyocera Mita America, Inc. introduced the new Kyocera ECOSYS FS-3040MFP and FS-3140MFP monochrome multifunction printers. These printers are designed to lower total cost of ownership and deliver fast speeds and superior monochrome quality. Both printers are engineered using Kyocera’s ECOSYS technology, the print rollers ensure that the devices do not generate ozone, while the toner-only consumables system minimizes waste; all ensuring low environmental impact and running costs. BERTL recently tested the Kyocera ECOSYS FS-3140MFP, which has a rated print speed of 42 ppm. The maximum monthly print volume is 200,000 pages with high toner yields of 15,000 pages per cartridge. The FS-3140MFP has flexible media capabilities with a maximum paper capacity of 2,100 pages, the ability to print on stock as heavy as 120 lbs index (216 gsm) and sheets up to 8.5” x 14”. PRINT PRODUCTIVITY

Evaluating print productivity is not as simple as timing copy jobs. The printing process involves several steps and can be affected by a variety of factors along the way. The document must first be spooled by the print driver into a PCL or PostScript file. The PCL or PostScript file is then sent to the printer where it is raster image processed (Ripped) into image data by the device processor. The image data is then sent to the marking engine and output as printed pages. It is possible to time and compare these factors through the use of careful preparation, conditioning and testing. Following are charts that show printing performance when tested under controlled conditions. NETWORK PRINTING

The Kyocera ECOSYS FS-3140MFP’s Rated Output Speed is 42 ppm.

The ECOSYS FS-3140MFP’s warm up time is 22 seconds.

The ECOSYS FS-3140MFP’s Rated First Page Out Time (FPOT) is as fast as 9.5 seconds.

The ECOSYS FS-3140MFP provides users a choice of multiple PDLs and print drivers including PRESCRIBE, PCL6 (5e, XL), KPDL3 (PS3), XPS, PDF 1.5, IBM ProPrinter X24e, Epson LQ-850, Diablo 630, Line Printer, KX Driver, Mini Driver, PPD for Mac, and PPD for UNIX drivers.

All the drivers offer bi-directional communication with its user-selectable interface for all of the Windows-based operating systems.

High print resolutions of up to 1200 x 1200 dpi (Fine 1200 Mode), 1800 x 600 (Fast 1200 Mode), 600 x 600 dpi, and 300 x 300 dpi for enhanced image quality.

COPY PRODUCTIVITY

Advertised speeds are always quoted using the simplest route (in-and-out of a device). Of course, users often apply finishing options, incorporate different media sizes and types into the document, print in duplex, and add other elements that can affect speed. In the chart below, BERTL tests how different modes—mixed-size original mode and duplex mode—affect document-feeder productivity. To assess copier productivity, BERTL ran copy jobs in order to determine document-feeder scanning speed, the effect of the first set out on overall engine speed, and whether specific job attributes affect engine throughput capability. Each job was set up by feeding media from the shortest media route to the shortest available output destination. A separate test examines how adding finishing/output destinations affects productivity. COPY FEATURES

The Kyocera ECOSYS FS-3140MFP’s copy speed is 42 cpm in both monochrome and color. The Kyocera ECOSYS FS-3140MFP’s Rated First Copy Out Time (FCOT) is as fast as 7 seconds. The Kyocera ECOSYS FS-3140MFP comes standard with a Reversing Automatic Document Processor (RADP with capacity for up to 50-sheets. Users can submit jobs that require single or duplex copying. The ECOSYS FS-3140MFP supports copy jobs that require 1:1, 1:2, 2:2 and 2:1 side printing.

Users can make copies that range from 1 to 999 in quantity and copy paper sizes from 5.5” x 8.5” up to 8.5” x 14”. The ECOSYS FS-3140MFP comes with the following image modes: Text, Photo, Text/Photo, Auto, and Manual.

The ECOSYS FS-3140MFP can simultaneously print, copy, fax and scan. Users can use the variable zoom to scale from 25% to 400% in 1% increments. Basic Copy Features included with the Kyocera ECOSYS FS-3140MFP incorporate the following: Auto, Magnification and Paper Select, Combine Image, Auto Start, Priority Copy, 20 Department Codes, and Job Programs.

The ECOSYS FS-3140MFP has 2-in-1 duplex copy function enabling users to combine two originals on one sheet of paper, such as driver’s licenses or passports.

PROGRAMMING THE CONTROL PANEL

A control panel’s ease of use—or lack of—can often have a significant effect on user productivity. The harder it is to select frequently used options such as duplexing and document finishing, the more time the user has to spend programming the device and the less productive they are. The Kyocera ECOSYS FS-3140MFP’s control panel consists of a LCD screen, a navigation scroll wheel, and hard keys. On the left side of the control panel, users have instant access to system functions such as Copy, Send, Fax, Document Box, and Status/Job Cancel, as well as a numeric key pad for entering fax numbers, etc. Also contributing to the productivity of this device is the ability to Scan-to and Print-from a USB flash drive instantly allowing users a more portable way of accessing their documents.

The Kyocera ECOSYS FS-3140MFP features a standard USB flash drive for printing files and scanning files stored on USB flash memory devices. The USB interface is conveniently located in front of the device under the control panel. PRINT DRIVER

As with control panels and touch screens, print driver design can vary enormously from manufacturer to manufacturer. The FS-3140MFP supports multiple page description languages, including Kyocera’s PRESCRIBE, PCL6 (5e, XL), KPDL3 (PS3), and XPS, and can be connected in any Windows®, Mac or Unix environment. The KX Driver allows users to access features integrated into each ECOSYS MFP from one common print driver.

In order to specify system defaults and installed options, administrators select the Devices and Printers box from the Microsoft Windows’ Start menu, and then select the FS-3140MFP’s print driver. Administrators can manually indicate which options are installed, or, by selecting the Auto Configuration option in the upper right, installed options will be automatically indicated in the print driver.

A unique feature offered with all Kyocera devices is the ability to modify the PDL within a single interface. Users have the option of selecting their driver from a dropdown list suitable to their printing needs. This functionality allows users to take full advantage of the unique features integrated into each ECOSYS MFP directly from one common print driver.

The FS-3140MFP’s PCL6 driver’s first tab, QuickPrint, provides profile settings for quick access to frequently and commonly used tasks. Additional options include the ability to change the orientation, collate, print on both sides and multiple pages per sheet (N-up). Also note that the left side of each tab displays a graphic image indicating the current print-job settings enabled, as well as a graphic of the FS-3140MFP showing how it is currently configured.

The PCL6 driver’s Basic tab provides options for specifying the paper size, source, media type, and destination. Additional options include the ability to change the document orientation, number of copies, print on both sides, and EcoPrint settings.

In the Layout tab, users can arrange document data on printed pages without changing the original document. Depending on the device options, users can choose from the following: Booklet – prints a multi-page document in a book

format that can be folded and stapled Multiple pages per sheet – prints more than one

document page on a single sheet Poster – prints a large banner using several sheets of

paper Scaling – increases or decreases the print size

The Imaging tab contains options for Print quality, Grayscale Adjustments, and settings such as Print text as black.

The Publishing tab lets users specify extra sheets to be added to print jobs. Users can select from Cover Mode (Front/Back), Page Insert, and Transparency interleaving which inserts a blank or printed page between transparencies.

The Advanced tab contains features that extend the capabilities of the printing system. Options include Prologue/Epilogue (used for special printing commands), Watermark (displays semi-transparent text), Security Watermark, and the status monitor used to display the printing system status messages.

ROUTINE MAINTENANCE

REPLACING TONER

In order to replace the ECOSYS FS-3140MFP’s toner, the user must first open the front panel by simply pulling the door down.

Above and below: Once the front panel is open, the user can then replace the toner cartridge by unlocking this blue lever and lifting the cartridge out for replacement.

Users must periodically empty the device’s toner waste container. The container is located on the left side of the printer and is accessed by simply opening this door then pulling out the container.

MISFEED ACCESS

The Reversing Automatic Document Processor (RADP) misfeed access area is accessed by lifting up this cover.

The rear duplex misfeed area can be accessed by sliding the unit out and clearing any misfeeds.

CLIENT UTILITIES AND DEVICE MANAGMENT

In order to take the best and most efficient advantage of a device and its capabilities, as well as ensure maximum uptime, clients need an efficient way to access and monitor the device. Kyocera offers many features and options to help productivity for all users including their Command Center Web page.

The ECOSYS FS-3140MFP’s Command Center web page enables users to check device status, Network IP information, System identification, as well as the status of paper sources and toner status.

The Device / Printer Status page provides users with detailed information associated with the devices current software levels, device settings, options, media input, and document output settings.

From the Printing Jobs Log users can view a list of jobs which have been submitted to the device for printing. Users can use this screen to check if their jobs have been completed. Similar logs are available for jobs that were sent out and stored on the device.

The Counters page provides users and administrators with an accounting of how the device is being used. Administrators can easily view the total number of pages printed, scanned, copies, and faxed. In addition, administrators can also get an accounting of the paper sizes being used.

The Network Status Page provides users with very detailed network protocol information such as the IP Filters, SNMP, POP3, SMTP, and Netware.

Network administrators can easily configure IPv4 and IPv6 network settings, gateway, authentication and device credentials within the web interface.

Administrators can configure LDAP settings so that the ECOSYS FS-3140MFP is conveniently linked to the network’s address book.

Administrators can manage address books by adding and deleting addresses as needed.

Administrators can configure the system so that specified users are automatically sent an e-mail message indicating that a specified status condition has occurred, such as when the toner is low.

KMnet Viewer is very comprehensive and easy to use tool designed specifically to aid administrators with managing large number of devices on their network.

KMnet Viewer provides bi-directional communication between connected devices and the administrator, locally or remotely.

Kyocera’s Status Monitor is designed to help users monitor their network devices and be more productive. Users have a remote look into the printer and their specific print job directly from their desktop. This utility also informs users of when their job is finished.

All consumables are quick and easy to replace. BERTL found replacing the toner cartridges and

emptying the toner waste container to be easy. BERTL found it easy to access and remove any

misfeeds. Kyocera Mita’s Command Center is a very well

designed and capable web-based utility that enables network administrators to manage the ECOSYS FS-3140MFP remotely via the network. This utility makes it very easy to monitor the device and its supplies directly from a client workstation. BERTL liked the ability to set up automatic e-mail alerts and maintenance notification.

Kyocera’s KX Driver allows users to access the unique features integrated into each ECOSYS printer from one common print driver, minimizing user acclimation when switching between devices.

KMnet Viewer allows administrators to monitor all devices on the network, including those from other vendors. KMnet Viewer provides proactive information showing problems before affecting users.

KMnet Viewer also provides visual, audible and E-mail notification of all device alerts to users, administrators and service locations. Administrators can easily customize alerts and create device groups for easy reporting and device management.

With KMnet Viewer administrators can configure, view, and monitor fleets of devices remotely as well as gather print job statistics and print reports.
