First Memories
• 12 year old “big fella” at National Age 2011
• Quiet, polite, loved to race
• Over the years, seen many physically advanced juniors not progress
2008-2011 Pt Lincoln
• Coach Carol Veldhuyzen
• Country boy and played all sports –swimming, football (AFL), Cricket, Basket Ball
• Initially swam 1-2 times per week, up to 4-5 (countries)
• “Amazing feel for the water, and processed stroke development quickly”
2008-2011
• Kyle had a good mix of great genes and a coach who nurtured talent
• Social connection and lack of pressure to perform
• Nurturing Coach and coach consistency
2011
• Family moves to Adelaide, joins Norwood and trains in our National Age Squad
• Introduction of core work, dryland training, Bootcamps, running
• Continued to play other sports, including AFL
• Training 3-5 times a week
2012
• I move to the State Facility - Marion
• Kyle trains twice a week at Marion
• Shaun Curtis coach at Norwood
• Makes first TransTasman Tour

2013-2015
• Kyle moved permanently down to Marion under Coach Shelly Jarrett
• Didn’t train early 5 AM’s
• Noticed lots of energy, enthusiasm
• Generally only 3-6 sessions per week of between 4-6km

Parents
• Very supportive, protective parents (very conscious of his age)
• Developed two way communication relationship
• Understand Sport, but not swimming
• Leave the coaching to the coaches
2013-2015 Key Strategies
• Relationships: within the squad, especially on National Teams
• Training: Learning the different energy systems and training paces
Kyle loved to push himself – didn’t train much, but always wanted to go hard
Eg 8-10x400 on 5-6min, 20x100 on 1.10 (SC)

Kyle responded well to one on one skills training, engaged, enthusiastic, liked challenges
International Experience
• 2012 TransTasman – swam well, didn’t enjoy the experience
• 2013 Japanese Olympic Cup – first time OS
• 2014 Oceania – NZ, swam well
• 2014 Youth Olympics, Nanjing. Sick leading into meet – lost weight, lifted for relays
International Experience
• 2015 World Champs, Kazan. Relay only, swam the house down. Enjoyed the Experience (AFL injury)
• 2015 World Junior Champs, Singapore. 7 Medals, 2 Individual Golds 50/100Free
• 2016 Santa Clara Meet
• 2016 Olympic Games
