Mass. Attorney General Martha Coakley visited Chinatown for a Community Conversations town hall on Jan. 14 at the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center. She discussed education, voting rights and diversity.

Representation was a recurring theme. “It’s important to me in civil rights and staffing to be inclusive,” Coakley said. “It’s what makes Boston and Massachusetts so rich. The history of our state and future is to welcome newcomers to our state.”

Coakley was elected attorney general in 2007 and was district attorney of Middlesex County for eight years before then. Her work includes implementing prevention programs in schools and communities for public

safety.“If we do not educate kids and make

sure they’re safe, we are going to pay for that in an expensive way in the future,” Coakley said.

Coakley voiced her support for bilingual ballots and voting rights for legal permanent residents, who have not yet become citizens.

Tianyu Zhang, a permanent resident from China, said, “I’d really like to have a voice like other Chinese immigrants. … I want to have input, as I’m paying the same tax dollars.”

Coakley noted that federal legislation took time, but said local communities should be able to allow permanent residents to vote. Cambridge, Newton and Amherst have introduced bills to allow foreign nationals in the process of immigration to vote. While similar legislation has passed in California and New York, the Mass. legislature has not yet approved these municipal bills.

“You want to vote; so many people born here take that right for granted,” Coakley said. “You appreciate you have to work for it.”

Kwong Kow Chinese School celebrates Year of the Horse

Kwong Kow Chinese School (KKCS) rang in the Year of the Horse at its “Dare to Dream” annual fundraising gala on Jan. 25 at Hei La Moon.

The school opened in 1916 to teach Toisanese at 2 Tyler Street, making it the oldest Chinese school in Boston. Today, the school at 87 Tyler Street offers Cantonese and Mandarin classes.

“I give my heartfelt thanks to everyone for helping us preserve our mission,” said KKCS principal Felicia Tsang. “We continue to promote Chinese language and culture.”

KKCS presented two awards to honor the community contributions of ellen Zane, vice chair of Tufts Medical Center’s board of trustees, and Bak Fun Wong, special assistant to the superintendent, Boston Public Schools.

Zane pledged her friendship to Chinatown. “It was a thrill to come to Tufts Medical Center in 1994 and walk into your community,” she said.

Wong thanked the school for its legacy. “Language is more important

than ever, especially Chinese,” he said.Wong also appreciated gala guest

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino for his continued support of the Josiah Quincy elementary School in Chinatown.

Wah Lum Kung Fu and Tai Chi Academy performed the opening lion dance. KKCS students performed traditional Chinese music on the yangqin and guzheng, along with dancing and reciting Chinese classic poems.

Chinatown cracks down on illegal dumpingBY THe ASIAN AMeRICAN CIvIC ASSoCIATIoN

Chinatown community organizations and the City of Boston have partnered to tackle the issue of illegal dumping and excessive trash in Chinatown over the past several months.

A Community Forum is planned for Feb. 8, at 1 p.m. at the Asian American Civic Association located on 87 Tyler Street, Boston, MA 02111.

“All organizations and individuals are welcome to join the efforts. The more participants there are, the more effective the collaboration is in transforming Chinatown into a clean, hygienic community,” said Mary Chin, Board President of the Asian American Civic Association.

Boston inspectors walked through Chinatown and issued eight abatement orders to building owners, with seven days to correct environmental violations of trash and rodents on Dec. 16, 2013.

John Meaney, Boston’s Director of environmental Services, said the City has ways to find out who does illegal dumping. violators can be fined up to $250.

Residential trash disposed in the wrong location is subject to a $50 fine, and trash put out on the curb earlier than 5 p.m. before a pickup day results in a $25 fine.

Chinatown meeting roundup: CCBA, CNC, HCABY LING-MeI WoNG

The Healthy Chinatown Alliance met on Jan. 15, while the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association had its first 2014 meeting on Jan. 21 and the Chinatown/South Cove Neighborhood Council elected two co-moderators on Jan. 22.

presented on renovating elliot Norton Park at the HCA meeting. Construction for the park could start in spring and be ready in June at the earliest, but a contractor is needed, said Allison Perlman, project manager. The renovation with additional play equipment could be postponed for after summer, as the park must close.

Pediatric obesity was the original focus of the HCA’s founding grant. As the grant money has ended for its one-year cycle, the group has grown from eight people to 42 members and broadened its focus to all age groups. The HCA conducted an analysis of strengths and

weaknesses to identify its next focus.

City planner looks at how immigration shaped Boston BY KennY Sui-FunG YiM

old and new Bostonians gathered on Jan. 15 for a talk on the city’s transformation over the last 200 years titled “ethnic enclaves, edge Gateways and the Global Boston,” presented by James Madden. Madden’s keynote address marked the beginning of the Boston Public Library’s Local and Family History Series, now in its 11th year.

Boston started out as a small town — an island, in fact, according to Madden. Unlike cities such as New York and Chicago, Boston wanted to remain as is. There was never any grand scheme for how the city would look, if it would even be a city at all. Instead, Boston developed little by little over periods of immigration influx.

The first wave came in the 19th century with the arrival of the Irish, who emigrated from their home country to escape the potato famine. In trying to illustrate the magnitude of this sudden surge in population, Madden likened the population boom to what Boston might look like if all Haitians displaced by the earthquake in 2010 had moved into the

greater Boston area. In the early part of the 20th century,

immigrants came from more varied regions of the world, including southern China when the Chinese left the Pearl Delta region’s collapsed economy in the wake of British imperialism. The Chinese are currently the second largest immigrant group in Boston — they represent around 11 percent of all minorities. Haitians constitute a slightly larger group at 13 percent. Interestingly enough, Boston’s demographics are unlike national statistics, which state that the majority of immigrants in the U.S. are from Mexico, India and the Philippines.

Another important part of Madden’s study was determining the spread of minorities over the Boston area. What he found through population surveys was that, rather than each minority being concentrated in a specific area, there is a signifcant amount of ethnic diversity within the neighborhoods themselves.

“The varied industries in Boston, like medicine and education, attract people from all over the world now,” Madden said. “This is really a return to normal.”

Boston students rally for library in Chinatown

Second graders from the Young Achievers Science and Math Pilot School in Mattapan voiced their support for a library in Chinatown on Jan. 17. They were joined by the Chinese Progressive Association and the Chinese Resident Association for a protest from the Chinatown Park to City Hall.

The Chinatown library was torn down in 1956 to make way for the construction of highway I-93, along with tenement houses on Hudson Street, which displaced about 300 individuals. Chinatown is now the only neighborhood out of 23 in Boston without a library.

“I’m so proud of you coming to support Chinatown to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King [Jr.],” said former Josiah Quincy elementary School principal Suzanne Lee to the students.

The students from Young Achievers learned about the library’s history as part of the school’s social justice curriculum. “They broke down the library for the highway,” said one second-grade girl.

City councilor at-large Michelle Wu encouraged the students to speak out.

“Thank you for advocating for Chinatown,” she said. “it’s so exciting to see so many young people involved.”

Young Achievers students took a field trip to the Chinatown Lantern reading room before it closed last February due to a lack of funding. The space at the oak Terrace apartment complex was provided by the Asian Community Development Corporation.

Wu will talk to Mayor Marty Walsh as well as other city officials and community organizers about bringing a library to Chinatown. Making use of community spaces, such as the Chinatown Lantern, would be one way to offer library services without building a new facility.

“Please bring back a library to Chinatown,” said Henry Yee, co-chairman of the Chinese Resident Association.

Already, 1 percent of Bostonians have reported flu symptoms, including runny nose, cough and fever, according to Deborah Kotz at Boston.com. If it rises to 3 percent, medical professionals begin to worry. The season usually peaks around February and March.

Walgreen’s has also partnered with TaskRabbit to create an app for iPhone or iPad, if you need medicine delivered to your house. Get “Cold & Flu Relief Fast” lets individuals pick up or have delivered medicine to kick the cold or flu.

NAAAP Boston’s 2014 Annual Celebration took place Jan. 18 at the Center for Arts at the Armory.

It was a night of celebrating and honoring NAAAP Boston’s leaders and sponsors for their continued support of its vision and mission to promote the career advancement and leadership development of Asian American professionals in all fields.

Wei Wong, the winner of an MvP award, said, “I am so happy that NAAAP gave this award to me. For me, the secret to winning this award is do things well.”

MvP awards were presented to Joanna Chua, Lesley Chuang and Jesse Nandhavan.

Stephanie Kan and Jamie Kim were awarded Rising Star awards.

The evening included salsa dancing, a photo contest and an art exhibit of Misha Lenn‘s work.

NAAAP Boston is the local chapter of National Association of Asian American of Professionals (NAAAP), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is dedicated to cultivate, support and promote Asian American leaders through professional development opportunities, community services engagement and diverse industry connection. Tufts Medical Center awarded grants through its Asian Health Initiative on Jan. 23 to seven grant recipients. The recipients are listed below with a description of their programs for the next three-year grant cycle.

Asian American Civic Association/Sampan: A bilingual, biweekly health section will focus on health topics to promote physical and emotional health, reduce health disparities and improved management of chronic diseases affecting the Asian community. A community advisory committee to help guide the selection of health topics and provide feedback on the effectiveness of health articles.

Asian Spectrum: A three-year project to develop two broadcast series and DVD, each of which focuses on a specific health issue. The two topics are diabetes and breast cancer. The goal of the series is to promote a better understanding of each disease, encourage pre-screenings, early diagnosis and treatment and help family members support treatment and recovery.

Boston Asian: Youth Essential Service: Teens for Healthy Living will engage 24 youth/young adults each year in nutritional workshops to promote healthy diets and food choices, healthy eating habits, encourage regular physical activities and promote a better understanding of safe ways to lose or

gain weight.Boston Chinatown Neighborhood

Center: Family Connector will provide three sets of services to community members who are experiencing stresses related to their immigration to the United States. These services include workshops to help participants identify sources of stress and the impact that stress has on one’s physical, emotional and family life. Small support groups will be convened to assist adults in establishing social networks for support and problem solving. Individual case management services will be provided for individuals and/or families in need of support.

Greater Boston Chinese Golden Age Center: Better Management of Chronic Disease for Asian elders continues to reflects GAC’s commitment to help seniors to better understand and manage their health and minimize the consequences of poorly managed diseases such as hypertension, diabetes or heart disease. The program will work with small groups of seniors at community locations where there is easy access for the seniors.

South Cove Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center: Monthly Breakfast Seminars will provide Boston Chinese seniors with information about health and health care issues of concern to them to support their good health and continued independent living.

The monthly seminars will introduce seniors to additional activities that will promote improved balance and reduce the risk of falls as well as painting classes to support cognitive skills.

Wang YMCA: Senior Strength and Movement Program (SSAM) will provide a more structured exercise program to seniors and introduce resistance training to help improve bone density and combating the risk for falls when seniors lose muscle, strength, balance and self-confidence in walking and other activities as they age. The resistance and strength training are mandatory elements of the program.

“Why should I care about my baby’s teeth when they are just going to fall out anyway?”

Parents with young children already have a many things to worry about. Many may be wondering, “Are baby teeth really that important?”

Well, the answer is “Yes!” Dental care is important for everyone,

including young children. Primary teeth, also known as “baby” teeth, are an important part of your child’s growth. They prepare the way for healthy, permanent (adult) teeth.

So, when should you schedule your child’s first dental appointment? The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and American Dental Association both recommend that you take your child to see a dentist when the first tooth comes in, or no later than the child’s first birthday, to reduce the risk of dental problems.

Baby teeth usually start showing between 6 months and 1 year of age. The process of teeth coming into the mouth is known as “tooth eruption.” Baby teeth

have a direct impact on the health and growth of your child. They help children to speak properly and chew healthy foods. Baby teeth also act as space holders and help guide the adult teeth into their correct places in the mouth.

Like adult teeth, your child’s baby

teeth can develop cavities and other dental problems. The first adult teeth come in around 6 or 7 years of age. Losing baby teeth too early can cause problems when it is time for the adult teeth to come in. The dentist can help you create a plan to develop good oral health habits for you

and your growing child. During the first dental visit, the dentist will check your baby’s mouth, teeth, and gums. He or she will show you how to properly care for your baby’s smile. Good oral health starts early!

Baby oral care tips• Schedule your baby’s first dental

appointment no later than his/her 1st birthday

• Clean your baby’s gums with water and a soft baby toothbrush or cloth

• Brush teeth with a soft toothbrush and a small amount of toothpaste

• Limit the amount of sugary liquids in a baby’s bottle

• Make sure children do not swallow extra toothpaste. They should spit during and after brushing, when needed.

Diabetes affects a growing percentage of Americans, but many don’t understand the basics of the disease.

Diabetes is a lifelong condition that occurs when you have too much glucose (a type of sugar) in your blood. Glucose is the major source of energy for our bodies. But too much can lead to serious health problems, like eye disease, kidney disease, nerve disease and heart disease.

Diabetes affects more than 8 percent of Americans — an alarming 25.8 million of us! Unfortunately, about 7 million of that number are believed to have it and don’t know it.

Understand the basicseven those of us living with diabetes

may not understand fully the basics of this disease. Here is a simplified way to understand how it happens.

After you eat, your body breaks food down into glucose and other nutrients. Your blood carries the glucose to the cells in your body. Insulin (a hormone made in your pancreas) carries the glucose from your blood into the cells of your body. The glucose can get into the cells only when insulin is there to let it in. once in the cells, glucose is used for energy or stored for future use.

If your body doesn’t make enough insulin and/or has trouble with what it does make, the glucose gets stuck. It cannot get into the cells, so it stays in the blood. With nowhere to go, the blood glucose levels rise. High glucose levels mean diabetes.

Two main types of diabetesType 1 diabetes develops when

your body’s immune system destroys pancreatic beta cells, the only cells that make insulin in your body. This means your body will produce too little insulin or none at all. People with type 1 diabetes must get their insulin by injection or through a pump each day.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. It usually appears in adulthood, but for some, it shows up earlier in life due to increased rates of obesity and less active lifestyles.

Type 2 diabetes often begins as insulin resistance. This means that the cells in your body are not using insulin properly. As the need for insulin rises, the pancreas slowly loses its ability to produce insulin. People with type 2 diabetes often need to take pills, insulin or both.

Staying healthy with diabetesYou can better manage your diabetes

and help prevent diabetes complications by practicing these health habits:

• Eating healthy: Include fruits, vegetables, lean meats, low-fat cheeses and whole grains in your daily meal plan — and don’t forget, watch your portions!

• Being active throughout the day: Being active helps you burn calories and feel better. The more you move around, the more energy you’ll have. Aim for a total of 30 minutes a day, most days of the week.

• Testing your blood sugar at home• Keeping your blood pressure in

control• Taking your medicine(s) as

instructed by your doctor (even when you feel well)

• Staying at a healthy weight• Asking for help if you feel down • Learning to cope with stress• not smoking• Paying attention to your feet. Check

your feet every day for cuts, blisters, red spots and swelling.

• Taking care of your teeth and gums• Knowing how to recognize and

quickly treat high and low blood sugar• Keeping up with routine care

Getting routine careWhen seeing your health care

provider, check to be sure you are up to date on all recommended tests, labs and procedures to find and treat any problems early.

At every visit, you should have your blood pressure, weight and feet checked. Then you should review your diabetes plan and goals with your doctor.

At least twice a year, you should get your A1c test — more often if your result is higher than 7.

And at least once a year, you should make sure you receive the following:

• Cholesterol test• Comprehensive foot exam• Dental exam• Dilated eye exam • Flu vaccine• urine and blood tests to check

kidneys

Did you know?Diabetes is:• The leading cause of kidney failure,

lower-limb amputations (not due to trauma) and new cases of blindness among adults in the U.S.

• A major cause of heart disease and stroke

• The seventh-leading cause of death in the U.S.

Do you know your diabetes ABCs?A1c Test: is a blood test that shows

what your average blood sugar has been over the past three months. The goal for many with diabetes is lower than 7.

Blood Pressure: The goal for people with diabetes is lower than 130/80 mm Hg.

Cholesterol• LDL (“bad cholesterol”) goal for

people with diabetes is lower than 100 mg/dl.

•HDL (“good cholesterol”) goal for men with diabetes is higher than 40 mg/dl and higher than 50 mg/dl for women.

• Total cholesterol goal is below 200 mg/dl.

Paying attention to your ABCs and keeping the numbers in control is important. It will keep you healthier and lower your risk for diabetes complications.

Family violence is a serious problem that knows no age, gender, socioeconomic and racial bounds, and is a hidden problem in many communities. For Asian communities, the prevalence of family violence is difficult to measure, but likely underreported. Abused Asians are often

ashamed to seek help and suffer in silence. They are isolated by language and cultural barriers, financially dependent on their abuser, and unaware of their legal rights. Many fear losing their homes, children, status and the support of relatives and community members. They do not know how to

access outside resources, and when they do, often times the agencies, police, and courts lack the multilingual skills and cultural understanding to effectively serve Asian families.

More than 20 years ago, Reverend Cheng Imm Tan mobilized community members to address the gap in needs and resources. Tan founded the Asian Task Force Against Domestic violence (ATASK), an organization specialized in working with Asian families and communities affected by domestic violence. Culturally and linguistically competent staff provides support, advocacy and education to those being hurt by their loved ones. In 1994, ATASK garnered community support and funds to open New england’s first emergency shelter for Asian survivors.

Asians continue to be the fastest growing population group in the state, with the cities of Boston, Quincy and Lowell having the most Asian residents. Family violence continues

to be a cr i t ical ly

important issue that compromises the health and well-being of communities. ATASK serves pan-Asian communities, primarily Cambodian, Chinese, South Asian and vietnamese adults and children. Its staff speaks more than 12 Asian languages and dialects, operates program sites in Boston and Lowell, and participates in community outreach activities throughout the state. This year ATASK proudly celebrates the shelter’s 20th anniversary, and the courage and resilience of thousands of adult and child survivors for whom the shelter has been a safe haven. May this year be one filled with good health, free of family violence.

Chinatown Main Street has organized a flower market for four years.

Traditionally, flower markets are outdoor events with vendors selling flowers and wares for the whole family before the lunar new year. The beginning of the Year of the Horse falls on Jan. 31.

This year was the first time the market took place in a tent, sponsored by Mohegan Sun Casino.

Chinatown Main Street celebrated the Year of the Horse at its annual gala on Jan. 11 at Hei La Moon.

“The purpose of Chinatown Main Street is to revitalize businesses,” said Tony Yee, Chinatown Main Street board president. It has worked with local businesses on storefront design and strengthening their economic resilience.

City councilor at-large Michelle Wu attended the banquet. “This is my first Chinese new Year banquet as a city councilor,” she said. “i hope to streamline small businesses to open every neighborhood in Boston.”

Wu’s fellow city councilor at-large Ayanna Pressley also spoke at the event. “I’m thankful to be joining you for the

Year of the Horse,” she said. “This is an important time of year to celebrate tradition, history and culture.”

Stephen Gilman, program director for Boston Main Streets, appreciated Chinatown Main Street’s efforts for the Chinatown Chinese New Year and August Moon celebrations. “In a new year, think about joining Chinatown Main Street,” he said.

A lion dance by Master Winchell Woo’s Chiu Mo Kwoon rang in the new year, along with traditional dances by children from Ivy Dance School. Table prizes for all guests were light bulbs, inviting people to send “bright” ideas to Chinatown Main Street.

Boston Police Department officers and staff celebrated Lunar New Year with teenagers from Boston Asian: Youth essential Service on Jan. 28.

officer Ted Boyle served hot dogs, while Sgt. Tom Lema challenged all comers to beat him at chess.

“We were youth at YeS, when this used to be a parking lot,” said Detective Cary Chin, a Cantonese-speaking policeman who grew up in Chinatown.

“Coming here after school with friends helps kids stay on the right track.”

About 60 youth participated in a Lunar New Year trivia quiz, with randomly selected teenagers receiving red envelopes with gift cards inside.

The mission of Boston Asian YeS is to inspire Asian youth to discover their potential. To this end, it has developed a community youth center for the 21st century at 199 Harrison Avenue.

中華廣教學校1月25號在喜臨門大酒樓舉辦年度籌款活動『傳承、創新、承擔』以慶祝馬年新年。學校創辦于1916年，在泰勒街2號教授台山話，是波士頓歷史最悠久的華人學校。現在，學校在泰勒街87號教粵語和普通話。廣教校長曾秀芬說：「我衷心感謝每一位為我們教育事業做出

貢獻的人。我們將繼續推廣中國語言和文化。」廣教學校向兩位對社區做出特別貢獻的人頒獎，他們分別是塔芙茨醫療中心副董事長Ellen Zane，以及波士頓公立學校校監特別助理黃伯勳。 Zane 表示了自己和華埠之間的友好聯繫。Zane 說到：「在1994年，初次來到塔芙茨醫療中

家庭暴力是一個不分年齡、性別、社會經濟和種族的嚴重問題，其隱藏在很多社區之中。對於亞裔社區，家庭暴力的普遍程度難以評估，卻易被低估。面對家暴的亞裔常羞於啟齒向他人求助，而選擇默默忍受。他們在語言和文化上受到隔離，經濟上需要依靠向他們施暴的一方，而且又沒有意識到自己的法律權益。家暴受害者中有很多是害怕失去自己的家庭、孩子、地位以及親人和社區其他成員的支持。他們不知道如何向外界資源尋求幫助，而就算他們願意向外界求助，往往由於語言和文化上的障礙，以至於相關機構、警察和法院無法有效幫助亞裔受害家庭。

20多年前，陳清音牧師動員社區成員，克服了需求及資源上的困難，成立了亞裔反家庭暴力專案組（簡稱ATASK），該組織致力於幫助受家暴的亞裔家庭與社區。由瞭解亞裔文化和語言的專員，向那些受到所愛之人不堪對待的受害者提供幫助，並宣揚反家暴理念。在1994年，ATASK 聚集了社區支持和資金，開設了

紐英侖第一間亞裔受害者緊急庇護所。

亞裔依舊是在麻州增長最快的族群，其中波士頓市、昆士市和洛厄爾居住著大量亞裔。家庭暴力依舊是社區中至關重要的問題。ATASK 向泛亞社區提供服務，主要包括：柬埔寨、中國、南亞和越南成人及兒童。其工作人員會超過12種亞洲語言和方言，並在波士頓和洛厄爾市設有辦事處，亦向全州開展社區宣傳活動。今年ATASK自豪地慶祝庇護所成立20周年紀念，以及成千位受害成年人和兒童的勇氣與毅力。願今年是滿有健康、無家庭暴力的一年。

家長經常問道，乳牙早晚會掉，有什麼好擔心的呢？家中的嬰兒對父母而言，需要操心的事已經多而又多，家長不禁會問，乳牙真的有那麼重要嗎？

然而，兒童牙醫的回答明確而堅定：的確，乳牙非常重要！

牙齒的保健對每個人來講都很重要，即使是嬰兒也不例外。乳牙是兒童發育過程中的重要環節，對日後恆齒的成長與健康也扮演了舉足輕重的角色。

什麼時候該帶孩子去看牙醫呢？美國兒童牙醫協會及美國牙醫協會都建議在孩子的第一顆牙齒長出後，就應開始孩子的牙科例檢，初次牙檢應在一周歲前完成。儘早、及時的牙檢可大副降低孩子日後牙齒方面的問題。

乳牙通常在六個月至一歲間長出。嘴巴里長牙的過程稱為出牙。乳牙長得好不好，會直接影響到孩子的健康與發育，例如，乳牙會幫助孩子發音、咀嚼食物等。乳牙的另一個功能是在口腔內佔據位置，導引日後恆齒的發育與成長。

乳牙也可能會有蛀牙及其它牙齒的相關問題。一般來講，第一顆恆齒通常在六到七歲間長出。乳牙過早脫落可能會影響日後恆齒的發育。牙醫可幫助家長制定一份良好的護牙計劃。第一次牙檢時，醫生會檢查孩子的口腔、牙齒及牙齦，並會建議家長保護乳牙的措施。儘早開始護牙是良好口腔健康的保障。

幼兒護牙訣竅•一周歲之前應有初次牙檢•用柔軟的嬰兒牙刷或牙布清潔嬰兒的牙齦•用柔軟的牙刷沾用少量牙膏清潔嬰兒的牙齒•不要餵食嬰兒過多醣類食品•注意不要讓嬰兒吞食過量牙膏，若口內牙膏較多，刷牙中及刷牙後應吐出過多牙膏•向牙醫詢問嬰兒護牙計劃

糖尿病影響著越來越多的美國人，但對該疾病的基本常識，大多數人仍一知半解，是時候讓大眾更加瞭解糖尿病了。

糖尿病是終身慢性病，是由於人體血液中含有過多的葡萄糖（一種醣分）。葡萄糖是人體能量的主要來源，但過多葡萄糖則會導致嚴重健康問題，如眼疾、腎病、神經疾病、心臟疾病等。

超過8%的美國人患有糖尿病 – 人數高達 2580萬人，相當驚人。不幸的是，其中大約有七百萬人並不知道自己患有糖尿病。瞭解糖尿病的基本知識

即使是糖尿病患者本身，也不見得完全瞭解該疾病的基本知識。現在，我們就來簡要介紹一下糖尿病的發病原理。

當你進食以後，人的身體會將食物分解成葡萄糖和其他營養成份。血液將葡萄糖送到全身的各個地方。胰島素（一種胰腺產生的激素）會將葡萄糖從血液中導入身體的細胞中。

胰島素是唯一能讓葡萄糖從血液中進入細胞的載體。當葡糖糖進入細胞後，要麼作為能量消耗掉，要麼儲存在細胞中留作以後使用。

如果您的身體無法產生足夠的胰島素，或者無法產生胰島素，葡萄糖會停留在血液里，不能進入到細胞中。於是血液中的葡萄糖成份升高，血液中過高的葡萄糖現象稱之為糖尿病。

兩種主要的糖尿病類型第一類型糖尿病 - 是由於

人體免疫系統破壞了人體內唯一能產生胰島素的『胰腺β細胞』。這意味著人體將會產生過少或者不產生胰島素。第一類型糖尿病患者必須每天依靠注射的方式來獲取胰島素。

第二類型糖尿病 - 是最常見的糖尿病。主要出現在成年人族群中，但由於現今肥胖率升高和運動過少的生活方式，這類糖尿病也出現在較年輕的族群中。

第二類型的糖尿病經常是由於身體對胰島素的抵抗導致的。這意味著人體中細胞沒有正確的使用胰島素。當對胰島素需求升高時，胰腺漸漸的失去了產生胰島素的能力。第二類型糖尿病的患者通常需要服用藥物，或注射胰島素，也可能兩者都需要。

糖尿病患者的健康生活方式通過以下幾種健康的生活習

慣，人們可以較好地控制糖尿病情並防止病情惡化。

•健康的飲食每日食譜中應該包括水果，蔬菜，瘦肉，低脂芝士和全麥，並且注意搭配的比例•每天保持適當的運動每日適當的運動有助於消耗體內的卡路里并改善精神狀況。活動的越多就會產生越多的能量。嘗試每天運動30分鐘，一周運動4~7天。•在家檢測血糖濃度•控制血壓•按照醫生的處方服藥（即使你未感覺任何不適）

•將體重控制在健康的範圍內•如果感覺消沉，向別人尋求幫助•學習如何處理生活中的壓力•戒煙•注意腿部每日檢查腿部狀況查看是否有劃傷，水泡，紅點和腫脹•注意口腔清潔•瞭解如何快速的發現和處理過高和過低的血糖狀況•定期檢查

受最新的檢查、測試和各式醫療步驟，好及早發現、及早治療。

每次檢查應當包括血壓、體重和腿部狀況，然後和醫生共同對您的糖尿病計劃和目標進行檢閱。

身體肥胖煩惱多多。英國的《麻醉雜誌》報導，50-60%的肥胖人士患有中輕度高血壓，5-10%的肥胖人士患有嚴重高血壓。《內科雜誌》也有報告，肥胖症患者患其它病症的風險較高，例如心髒病、血脂異常、糖尿病、阻塞性睡眠呼吸暫停、膽囊疾病、關節變性病及心理障礙等。這些常見的並發症使得肥胖症患者被列為麻醉及手術操作時易出風險的高危險族群。

病人接受任何麻醉之前，麻醉人員都會給病人放置靜脈輸液管。許多時候，很難找到肥胖患者的靜脈。因為肥胖患者的體重問題，麻醉後给他們擺手術所需體位也很麻煩。

胸腹肥厚的脂肪使得患者呼吸時胸肺擴張不利，即使麻醉機幫助他們呼吸,也是比一般人困難。腹腔內的脂肪也有礙於吸氣時膈肌（一種幫助呼吸的肌肉）下降，從而造成肺底部不能擴張。由於肺部擴張困難，肥胖症患者吸入不到足夠的氧氣，因此體內存有較少氧氣。與此同時，肥胖症患者基礎代謝率有所增加，所需氧氣量相應提高，因此體內氧氣消耗較快。這也是為什麼肥胖症患者爬樓梯或是快步行走時氣喘吁籲的緣故之一。肥胖

症患者接受麻醉入眠時，由於他們頭、臉部面積較大，麻醉師不易用面罩向其體內輸氧。總而言之，低存氧、高需氧及輸氧困難使得肥胖症患者受麻醉時很容易缺氧。患者平躺接受手術時，情況更糟。所以，保持肥胖症患者手術時的正常血氧含量對麻醉師來講具有挑戰性。

根據《美國胸腔醫學學報》的匯報，29-40%的肥胖症患者術後有肺部問題出現。美國的年平均術後並發症發生率為4%。《世界外科學報》提到，與體重正常的患者相比，肥胖症患者患心髒病、傷口感染、外周神經損傷、尿道感染機率大增

大約60-90%的阻塞性睡眠呼吸暫停的患者同時患有肥胖症，然而80-95%的阻塞性睡眠呼吸暫停的患者,在來做手術前並沒有被診斷出此症，而麻醉師通常是第一位發現患者有阻塞性睡眠呼吸暫停的醫師，症狀包括打酣、睡眠時呼吸停止，日間困乏等。阻塞性睡眠呼吸暫停的患者與肥胖症患者有許多相似點。因此，麻醉師處理兩種患者方法有所類似。然而，對阻塞性睡眠呼吸暫停的患者來講，全身麻醉時氣管插管經常困難，由此可能會造成很多並發症，包括危及性命。

患有肥胖症的孕婦具有上述所有病症，分娩時實施硬膜外止痛也較普通人困難。最近的文獻和以前的報導一致顯示，與麻醉相關的孕婦死亡和孕婦肥胖有關。1985至2003年密執安州的八例分娩死亡案例中，有六例是肥胖症患者。所有死亡均發生在全身麻醉甦醒、轉運病人或是在恢復室期間。所以，對患有肥胖症的產婦來講，醫師要自始至終保持警覺直至產婦徹底從全身麻醉恢復。

為提高患者安全，不少專業組織已經成立，對肥胖患者的麻醉進行了大量的相關研究，例如，肥胖症患者圍手術期護理國際協會和肥胖病人麻醉協會等。針對阻塞性睡眠呼吸暫停的患者的麻醉臨床指南也已經發表。

根據世界衛生組織2008年的數據調查，肥胖症在中國的發病率為5.6%，在美國為31.8%。然而，在美國出生的華裔及拉丁裔青少年患肥胖症的機率比家族的第一代移民高兩倍以上。因此，即便您目前並不肥胖，也要經常注意體重。

趙培山醫師是塔芙茨醫療大學中心麻醉科的主治醫師和麻醉科亞洲病人教育部主任。他擁有北京大學醫學部的學位，並且在北京大學與波士顿聖伊麗莎白醫院（Caritas St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center of Boston）做住院醫師訓練。

塔芙茨醫療中心 (Tufts Medical Center) 宣布，長期居住於波士頓華埠並致力於爭取華埠利益的僑領陳毓禮 (Frank Chin) 將獲頒終身成就獎，頒獎儀式將於3月26日在本年度的Working Wonders 慈善晚會上進行。該獎項的頒發，是為了感謝獲獎人在其職業生涯間對塔芙茨醫療中心並浮船兒童醫院 (Floating Hospital for Children) 的顯著貢獻。

陳毓禮是推動波士頓華埠移民服務的大家長，多年來，他在型塑華埠自然、社會、經濟、文化景觀等各方面都有著極大影響。無論是在華埠，或著是在廣泛的華人社區內，陳毓禮是大家親切的『Frank 叔叔』，他在1969 年被任命為社區申訴小組（Grievance Task Force) 的聯合主席，該小組是由當時波士頓市長Kevin White所建立，目的在於加強注意社區內的各樣需要。陳的性格積極、敢言，不僅提出許多需重視的社會議題供大眾思考，也引入了多項資源來幫助華埠社區。因著他的努力協助，才有了華埠今天多間協會組織的成立，如：中華耆英會、華美福利會、華人醫務中心、牌坊公園以及一年一度的華埠

中秋聯歡會。在近五十年的歲月裡，陳毓禮致力於推動社區服務，滿足社區需要，其包括經濟房屋的建案、街道的清潔與安全、小型企業與經濟的開發、青年人的前景發展等等。

陳毓禮為波士頓市府擔任採購一職長達25年之久，期間歷經了多任市長：Kevin White、Raymond Flynn 以及現任市長托馬斯曼寧諾 (Thomas Menino)。身為非正式的『華埠鎮長』，陳一直都在當地社區和塔芙茨醫療中心、浮船兒童醫院之間扮演著聯絡彼此的重要橋樑，亦持續地為華埠社區的需要而努力。

塔芙茨醫療中心並浮船兒童醫院的臨時院長Michael Wagner 表示：「我們對於陳毓禮先生獲得2013 年的終身成就獎一事深感興奮，我們每天在醫療中心都可以見到陳先生多年來為華埠勞苦的果效 — 實在是等不及要在三月與900位各界的朋友，來分享他的經歷並為他所成就的事跡加以喝彩。」

華埠社區組織和波士頓市政府近日聯合處理華埠非法倒垃圾行為和垃圾過多的問題。

社區論壇於二月十八日下午一點在華美福利會，泰勒街87號召開。

華美福利會董事長陳美霞說：「我們歡迎所有組織及個人都加入此項工作。越多人參加，華埠就能越快地成為乾淨整潔的社區。」

2013年十二月十六日，波士頓檢查員給華埠業主開了八項罰單，給業主七天時間去改善環境並處理垃圾問題。在華埠也開出了兩張25元美金的罰單，其原因為過早將垃圾放出來。

波士頓市府對非法傾倒垃圾行為的定義為：在未授權的地方丟棄垃圾、碎片、殘害等。

波士頓環境服務主席Jo h n Meaney表示：「我們有辦法找到非法傾倒垃圾之人。」

對於非法傾倒垃圾者，最高罰款可至250元。住戶在錯的地點放置垃圾或在傍晚5點以前將垃圾放置路邊將會被罰款50元。而在收取日前放置垃圾者則會被開罰25元。

Min Wu 對當前情況感到十分沮喪。Min Wu 表示：「這是一個雙

方皆失利的情況，如果我們去清理了非法傾倒的垃圾，違反者還會繼續傾倒垃圾，因為他們覺得有人會幫他們清理掉那些垃圾。但如果我們不清理掉那些垃圾，垃圾將會變得很噁心，還會發出臭味。」

華埠主街董事長余俊明說到：「華埠主街的主要任務是振興經濟。」華埠主街已經幫助當地商業店鋪改善店面以增強他們的經濟恢復能力。

波士頓不分區市議員吳弭參加了這次宴會，吳議員表示：「這是我第一次以議員的身份參加華埠中國新年慶祝活動。我希望能讓小型商業發展到波士頓的每一個社區。」

吳弭的同事波士頓不分區市議員普斯莉也說到：「我很感激有機會能獲邀參與這次馬年的新年活動。中國新年是一個慶祝傳統、歷史和文化的重要節日。」

華埠主街新年慶祝活動

近日，塔芙茨大學社區基金會（簡稱TNSF)為華埠七間機構授予了津貼。每年，TNSF都會從大學雇員中募集捐款，再捐獻給和學校合作的社區、非營利性組織以及一些活躍的志願者。

該基金委員會是由塔芙茨大學的管理人員、教職員和工作人員共同組成。他們每年都會舉行例行會議來商討各類申請，並選出津貼獲益者。委員會成員們主要是透過考量申請的積極性和需求性來作出最後決定。2013年TNSF所得的捐款共有一萬九千三百美元。委員會收到了69件申請，超過十萬五千美元的津貼要求。最終，委員會批准了其中29件。

2013年華埠津貼受益者為：•8centric：獲益300元，用於英語交流小組的錄像用品

•華美福利會：獲益500元，支持職業訓練計劃

麻州州長候選人瑪莎•克莉來訪華埠

1月14日麻州檢察官瑪莎•克莉來訪華埠，在波士頓華埠社區參與了社區論壇。她主要討論了教育、選舉權、多樣性等相關問題。

代表陳述一直圍繞著主題。克莉談到：「對我來說公民權利和職工安置問題是十分重要的。這是波士頓和麻州富有的原因。從過去到未來我們都是十分歡迎新移民選擇來麻州居住。當我作為一名政府官員時，我代表的是我們整個州。」

2007年克莉當選總檢察長，在此之前，克莉擔任了八年的米德爾塞克斯地區檢察長。她的工作包括對學校以及社區安全問題採取制止行動。

克莉說：「如果我們不教育孩子，確保他們的安全，我們將在以後付出沉痛的代價。如果我們不重視孩子的身心健康，我們將會花更多的時間重新培養他們的習慣。」

克莉聲稱她支持雙語選票以及給法定暫住居民但還不是市民的人選舉的權利。

居民表示：「我也希望像其他中國移民一樣發出自己的聲音…我希望自己能投入其中，就像我也有納相同的稅一樣。」

克莉指出聯邦法律需要一些時間，但是當地社區應該讓暫住居民參與投票，劍橋市、牛頓市以及艾摩斯特市允許在辦理移民階段的外籍人士參與投票。當相似法律已在加州以及紐約州通過，麻州的立法機關卻還沒有通過類似的市政法案。

克莉說：「你想有投票權，儘管許多出生在這裡的人把這當作理所當然的權利。你應該感謝你能夠為此而努力。」

社區論壇是由來自州長派屈克的亞裔委員會所主持。社區論壇希望提供麻州亞裔委員會更多學習的機會。

華埠健康聯盟在1月15日舉行會議，而中華公所在1月21日舉行了2014年的第一次會議，還有華埠南灣社區在1月22日選出了兩名共同主席。

華埠健康聯盟 (HCA)波士頓公園和休閒設施在

HCA會議上提出了關於翻新Elliot Norton公園的計劃。工程項目經理Allison Perlman說，建設園區可在春季開始，並最早能在6月完工，但承包商是必要的。這個翻新工程要增設額外遊戲設備因為園區必須關閉可能會被延遲至夏季後才進行。

兒童肥胖是HCA的創立支助金起初的焦點。當支助金已經結束其為期一年的週期時，該集團已經從八個人發展到42名成員並擴大轉移其重點到所有年齡組。 HCA進行了優勢和弱點的分析，以確定其下一步的重點。

來自Mattapan青年成就者科學和數學試點學校的一群二年級學生，於1月17日表示對華埠圖書館作出支持。他們連同華人前進會和華埠居民會，從牌坊公園抗議遊行到市政府。

華埠圖書館以及其鄰近的晏臣街，在1956年因I-93公路被拆毀，有約300人也被遷移。而唐人街是波士頓23地段中唯一沒有公共圖書館的社區。

昆士小學前校長李素影對學生說：「你們支持華埠並藉此紀念馬丁•路德•金博士，我感到十分自豪。」

青年成就者的學生從學校的社會公義課程中學習了解圖書館的歷史。

一位二年級的女孩說：「他們為了興建高速公路而拆毀了圖書館。」

勵學生開口發言。她說：「謝謝你們擁護唐人街。看到這麼多年輕人的參與，真的令人興奮 ...這事能讓孩子們覺得市政府是在意他們的聲音的。」

青年成就者的學生趕於2013年2月前，實地參觀一所由於資金缺乏而關閉的華埠龍騰閱讀室。這個位於華信屋內的閱讀室，由亞美社區發展協會提供，為公眾存放兒童和年輕成人書籍。

吳議員為了讓華埠能有一間圖書館，她將會與市長華殊、城市官員和社區組織進行傾談。利用社區空間，如華埠龍騰，就是在不需興建新設施的狀況下，而為大家提供圖書館服務的方法之一。

華埠居民會主席余仕昂說到：「希望圖書館重歸華埠的日子可以快快來到。」

中華公所（CCBA）中華公所認可其2014年成員：

主席阮鴻燦、核數師黃立輝、英文書記李嘉玲、中文書記雷景林和財政翁宇才。

阮鴻燦說，華埠存和隊將不再支付每人50美元在華埠進行晚間巡邏，而是使巡邏執勤變成自願和無薪酬。有意者可以與翁宇才登記。

中華公所現面臨兩起訴訟。一起是陳毓璇發起的誹謗訴訟，關於

1983年至2001年董事間的相討而存在不確切的會議記錄。會議記錄已從中華公所網站被移除。

另一起是來自世界廣東同鄉會和海橋聯誼會發起的訴訟，表示美國馬薩諸塞州的法案章節沒有法律地位，並要求中華公所通過投票暫停兩個協會的代表。
