The past six weeks have been just remarkable
the wonder that is possible when the educational
purpose pivots around a fulcrum of excellence,
together with the determination to boldly engage and
celebrate the human potential of its charges.“

Something wonderfulabout to happen...
The Take Beyond Leadership Project is a non-profit,
Section 21 Company established in October 2005 for
the purpose of designing, supporting, managing and
encouraging such social initiatives as would precipitate
new realities in the lives of marginalized and previously
disadvantaged South African communities.
This company is presently incorporated within the
Bester Burke Slingers Marketing and Advertising Group
of which Bryan Slingers is the Executive Chairman...
The morning of day one

as the children of Groenvlei
and Vlakteplaas

...and with the song and dance
of “peel the banana”
a carpet of joy rolled out
so that children could play

Change the worldone classroom at a time
We need to create the conditions that enable
our pupils to walk tall in their own stature,
and are determined to learn from and follow
the Vlakteplaas example in this regard.
Vlakteplaas is, in our collective view, a vibrant
and living example of the wonder that is
possible when the educational purpose pivots
around a fulcrum of excellence, together with
the determination to boldly engage and
celebrate the human potential of its charges.
Consequently, we have decided that Noem
My Op My Naam will become the “ceremonial
centre-piece” of the Groenvlei Take Beyond
Initiative and will lie at the foundation of our
engagement with the Vlakteplaas School.
Bryan Slingers, Patron of Take Beyond
Elke Vlakteplaas kind het A5 toevou houer

spesiale “naam” gedig binne, asook pragtige foto

My naam is my erfenis ‘n bloedsverbond met my familie...

She is a legend - actress, singer, pianist, choreographer, mu-
sical director, teacher - truly a Master in the Theater of Life!
How fortunate we were to experience her dedication in the
“Naam” activities she visualized and with which the Groen-
vlei fourteen inspired us.

Valourise your own heritage...
9
The Groenvlei Theatre Society selected four-
teen pupils to work with actress and musical
director Michele Maxwell in a structured
process to equip them to give effective and
dramatic expression to the central purpose
and meaning of Die Naam Projek, and enable
them to tell their own stories, and valourise
their own names and heritage.

Hoe menswarm is dit om jou te ken. Om jou vriend te noem.
Jy die opvoeder wat vreesloos opgestaan en gesê het: “Tel my
by dié wat veg teen die ongeregtigheid van rassisme.” Vandag
is jy kunsteliefhebber, sakereus, leier, beskermheer van hon-
derde kinders in bitter lewens, entoesias wat aanhou soek na
nuwe horisonne vir dié om jou wat in die donker van wanhoop
dwaal. Ek noem jou naam met trots Bryan!

Dit is my biografie. My handtekening op diesamelewing.
In my naam le opgesluit my storie en die storie vanmy mense.
Dit vertel wie ek is, waar ek vandaan kom, van myhartstog en my hartseer.
My naam is my erfenis, die direkte lyn na my voor-vaders, ‘n bloedsverbond met my familie. Dit plaasmy in konteks en tog sonder dit my ook uit.
As simbool van my uniekheid, is my naam mynalatenskap.
Net klanke, letters aanmekaar geslaan en tog hou mynaam ‘n krag veel groter as wat ek somtyds besef.Dit gee betekenis aan my as mens.
Noem my op my naam en jy erken my menswees,my reg tot bestaan, my reg tot respek.
My naam is die vlagpaal van my menswaardigheid.Daarsonder is ek ‘n niks, ‘n niemand, ‘n onbenoemdeeen sonder plek of posisie.
Maar Godgegewe en onveranderlik is my naam mygeboortereg.
Solank as wat ek daaran vasklou kan jy my nie ont-wortel of ontneem van dit wat tereg myne is nie.
My naam is my oorlogskreet!
Noem my op my naam...

How proud you can be Walter...
11
ek noem jou op jou naam
en al het ek jou
nog nooit ontmoet
ken ek jou baie goed
want jou ambassadeurs
het die jubel
en die vaandel
van eie trots
my skool ingedra
en aan almal gesê
noem my op my naam
ek is Groenvlei High
ek hou my kop hoog
ek is kind van
Walter Adonis!
how proud you can be
as father of a great school
to send but only
fourteen emissaries
talented students
to carry your enthusiasm
dedication
creative spirit
into the mountains
of a faraway world
to where a hundred
rural children
eagerly awaited the dream
of friendship
of love
of joy for Life
and Groenvlei came
dancing and singing
the rhythm of peel the banana
and in one single moment
strangers became friends
hunger became a feast
thirst became a well of joy
yesterday’s sadness
became today’s war cry
“noem my op my naam!”
the magnificent fourteen
wore a badge of honour
that shone into every corner
into each of our souls
and where there was despair
they sowed seeds of hope
so that before long
flowers bloomed
in the fields of grey lives
and children cried
with happiness
as they hugged a new found strength
in their own identity
their very own war cry
“ek is spesiaal
ek staan met my kop hoog
ek het ‘n toekoms
noem my op my naam!”
I salute your
Magnificent Fourteen
who carved their names
with pride
into our hearts
so that we will
forever remember
the magic they brought
to our beloved
Vlakteplaas UCC Primêr
how proud you can be today
Walter Adonis!
