ITS Berkeley leaders Alexandre Bayen Michael Cassidy and Daniel A Rodriguez welcomed Assemblymember Buffy Wicks to campusAugust 19 2019
Dear Friends and Colleagues It feels so good to be back in theswing of Fall semester We had agreat start to the academic year andmet many new faces and welcomed
back many more in the various programs that includetransportation students This year we have 115 master anddoctoral students who identify with ITS Berkeley We alsohave a few new lead researchers and affiliates to make 56transportation leaders in our ranks Stop by the first floorof McLaughlin Hall to see the full poster of our studentsfaculty and lead researchers I am glad to see suchenthusiasm at ITS and I am excited for the busy scheduleof the semester full of classes seminars and projects
Speaking of new projects I would like to congratulateSusan Shaheen in her role as the Innovative MobilityDirector of the University of California Institute ofTransportation Studies As director she is leading theCalifornia Innovative Mobility Initiative (CA IMI) aUniversity of California Institute of Transportation Studies(UC ITS) partnership with the State of California local andregional governments non-governmental organizationsand private-sector businesses This new venture isfocused on delivering impartial long-term research policyanalysis knowledge exchange and real-world technicalassistance on the transition to connected automatedelectric and shared mobility and other disruptions This isan exciting new venture that has a great potential toimpact future policies in California the nation and theworld
Associate Director Daniel A Rodriguez Professor MichaelCassidy and I were fortunate enough to talk to about thisproject with Assemblymember Buffy Wicks on her mostrecent visit to campus last month She was very pleasedto hear about our statewide leadership on this initiativeWicks was also very interested in learning about ourresearch on connected and automated pilots in Californiathe rise of navigational app induced congestion inresidential streets roles of transportation networkcompanies in future last mile solutions for transit andintegrated corridor management projects in California Ireally do enjoy meeting with our state officials to talk aboutthe great work we are doing at ITS and the CentersThank you for all the important research you are all doingwhich makes this part of my job so fun and easy
As I look ahead into October we have many excitingseminars and events ahead of us I would like to remind allof you about the Sustainable Aviation Symposium comingup Oct 7-8 on campus featuring experts from across theglobe presenting the latest breakthroughs in electricaviation httpswwwsasymposiumcom I am soappreciative of the College of Engineering who hasstepped in to help reduce the cost of the symposium forstudents now $20 for the two-day event UC Berkeleyfaculty are also being offered a discount too check out theour website for discount codes I hope to see you at thisor one of our many fall semester events we have comingup
