TECHNOLOGY & YOUTHIn this modern era, the advancement of

technology has been proven to be an

advantage in various aspects where life

suddenly becomes more manageable.

Items like plasma televisions, smart

phones, notebooks and other electronic

gadgets bring joy to our lives and in the

same way, the youths’ daily routine has

changed as well.

The digital network of integrated media is embed

itself in the fabric of society by displacing the

networks of human empathy that maintain the

well being of family, the community and the

state.

OPPORTUNITY

1. Being anti-social and ignorant is cool

Page 32: KUCHING ’ S YOUTH IN 2030

OPPORTUNITY

1. Being anti-social and ignorant is cool

Keeping in touch via technology

decreases the intensity of speaking

directly. It causes the lacking of

tolerance among people and influence

communication skill. Intimate time with

our families is displaced by virtual

relationships.

Page 33: KUCHING ’ S YOUTH IN 2030

OPPORTUNITY

2. Envy amongst youth

Page 34: KUCHING ’ S YOUTH IN 2030

OPPORTUNITY

2. Envy amongst youth

The need for the latest and greatest cell

phone model causes status envy and

unnecessary stress on a parent child

relationship. Stress can also develop in

school and cause them to lose focus of

what their job as children and students

is.

Page 35: KUCHING ’ S YOUTH IN 2030

OPPORTUNITY

3. Digital engagement equals disengagement

Page 36: KUCHING ’ S YOUTH IN 2030

OPPORTUNITY

3. Digital engagement equals disengagement

In this era, technology is a necessity to

make the world run smoothly. On the

other hand, it can affect the

performance of youth; they become

unproductive and can influence the

quality of human resources in the future.

In the end, laziness also can raise the

obesity rate among youths.

Page 37: KUCHING ’ S YOUTH IN 2030

OPPORTUNITY

4. Increase in death rate

Page 38: KUCHING ’ S YOUTH IN 2030

OPPORTUNITY

4. Increase in death rate

Overdependence on technology can

threaten youth’s life. Facebooking and

answering call while driving are two

common causes of car accident among

youths; Health problem will arise due to

technology addiction. Medically, cell

phones are rumoured to cause tumours

or cancers. Sitting too long while playing

with gadgets can lead to osteoporosis

because they are not as active as they

used to be going from place to place.

Page 39: KUCHING ’ S YOUTH IN 2030

OPPORTUNITY

5. Culture and attitude

Page 40: KUCHING ’ S YOUTH IN 2030

OPPORTUNITY

5. Culture and attitude

Youths are becoming far from their root

cultured and social values. They are

more into internet and television.

Unfortunately if they are drown into the

negative stuffs such as pornography or

violent acts, it can ruin their future.

As a youth in Kuching, technologies make all things easier in my life. With the advancement of technology, information gathering has become more efficient as it gives me faster access with the help of internet and portable due to its small size. Besides that, I’m depending on the technology to know more about the latest news of today’s world. Technology brings fun and colours into my life and I cannot live without it.

SECONDARYIn today’s world, technology plays a big part of our lives where everything in our lives becomes easier and more convenient. However, I can see that addiction to technology has become a big problem in today’s youth where they can become too attached to their mobile devices by spending their life & time via social network instead of talking face to face. Misuse of technology is also one of the major concerns in today’s youth because they will over spend their time and money on devices and entertainment due to trend and peer pressure.

• In Sarawak (and the entire states of Malaysia), the voting age is 21 years old unlike most countries with their voting age at 18 years old

• This age limit is clearly out of step with other countries and is inconsistent with legal rights as citizens are given a green light at an earlier age to leave school at 16, learn driving at 17 and lastly, get married, have consensual sex, sign contracts, and buy tobacco and alcohol at 18 years old.

Some politicians tend to fight among

themselves where they accuse each other of

crimes they may or might not commit, and

this can be seen in Israel ties and Bersih.

Some would only fight for their benefit and

not for the well fair of the country. An

example like Barisan Nasional,

lure immigrants by giving them temporary

citizenship to get votes. This however, doubts

youths on whether the government has

treated everyone fairly.

Page 101: KUCHING ’ S YOUTH IN 2030

OPPORTUNITY

2. Lack of political interests and awarenessMost youths may not know about hard core

politics, but they are passionate about

issues in their lives. Majority of them rather

either to discuss politics and policies with

friends and family, take part in political

campaigning and observe elections, or to only

vote and read about issues floated

during elections. The rest show no interest

in politics where they would rather focus on

entertainment and world politics at the very

least as they distinguished as no connection

in their daily lives.

3. Difficulties in keeping track and choosing a side

Page 103: KUCHING ’ S YOUTH IN 2030

OPPORTUNITY

3. Difficulties in keeping track and choosing a side

Many youths find the current political state

messy and confusing, which makes it harder

for them to choose a side and therefore,

staying neutral is the best option. The fact of

not taking sides with any political party and

indifference are also the main reasons of

many unregistered youth voters as showed in

the survey conducted by Bernama.

TARGET PROFILE

TARGET PROFILE PRIMARY

In this modern era, I find the life in Kuching has become more developed for the past couple of years with the upcoming of more entertainments like new shopping malls. However in issues like politics, I have not registered myself to vote although I had reached the minimum legal age (21 years old) due to numerous corruptions from different parties and politicians using the money for their own benefits instead of helping the needy in our country as I had seen and heard in the news. At the same time, it does not concern me at the moment because election does not bring much changes towards the development of our country and therefore, staying neutral is the best option for me.

SECONDARYIn today’s world, I can see that not many of our youths registering themselves to vote due to the serious corruption and plus, not many of them are open in rebuking one another for further improvement. In my opinion, they are too young to be involved in politics as they are not knowledgeable about the government and politics. With the negative influence of politics, this has also led them not to get into understanding or participating in politics and election.
