Whitehall Ferry Terminal - Manhattan

The Whitehall Ferry Terminal is located at the southern tip of Manhattan and services ferries to and from Staten Island. My approach for the redesign of the terminal was to extend the grids of Manhattan’s streets down to the site and use that to dictate the different layers of the terminal as well as incorporating adjacent Battery Park.
The museum uses the forms of the Mobius strip and Klein bottle to inspire its circulation. Various light chambers collect sunlight and focus it down into the underground museum creating a contrast of light and dark that is ever changing depending on the time of year and day.

This house was designed for a family responsible for clear-ing snow from the nearby highway and includes a large shed for the necessary equip-ment. The design responds to the extreme environmental factors of the site while also merging with the landscape by sinking the building into the hillside. Additional pro-gram includes a thermal bath complex that is highlighted by a large tower that reflects light form the large pool and is visible to travelers on the highway and acts as a sort of beacon to this public ‘oasis’.

The Palazzo del Cinema hosts the world’s oldest film festival, the Mostra del Cinema, as part of the annual Biennale and is located on one of Venice’s satellite isles, the Lido. The redesign of this facility aims to take advantage of the architectural freedom found on the Lido, as opposed to Venice, while still paying respect to its historical context. The theatres are dominant elements on the site, rising out of the canal that is introduced into the building, and framing views along the axis back towards Venice and out towards the Adriatic Sea. The presence of the opaque theatres is contrasted by the structural glass floors and facades found elsewhere. Secondary program (bookstore, restaurant, film market and exhibiton space) is found on top of and underneath the theatres.
