    Summer School

Many of our Year 7 students made a great start to their Kingsbury careers by attending our fantastic Harry Potterthemed Summer School during the holidays. Students took part in a fantastic range of activities, from sports to art, dance and drama. They even tried their hand at sand animation, the results of which can be seen below. The

Astroturf was converted to a Quidditch pitch for an inter-form tournament with a difference, supported by formtutors and our older students.

A great time was had by all and many had a go at activities they hadnttried before. It was an ideal way to familiarise themselves with the

school, make new friends and get to know staff ahead of September. We also welcomed children from Year 5 in local primary schools for theirown Summer School week, which was equally successful. I would like tothank all the staff, students and external providers who worked hard tomake it such a fantastic experience. Mrs Sanders

In July a group of Year 9 students visited the IKON Gallery in

Birmingham. Abdulrahmaan Yoosuf, Chloe Watt, Jessica Ancil, Elpida

Kampouri and Taranjot Pagpattanl were all introduced to Tapa, which are

bark-cloth paintings from the Pacific, and the work of Franois Morellet.

They also took part in a workshop which

focused on creating a personal response

to the works they had looked at. A range

    of different artistic techniques were

    used, including stencilling and printing.

The students got a lot out of the visit and

were a credit to the school.

Business Studies News by Mrs Jennings

Kingsbury schools Year 10 business students were recently visited by guest speaker Colin Hamilton from

Interserve. Colin, Divisional Director for Interserve Strategic Partnerships, gave a brief history of his career before

discussing in detail the visions and values of Interserve and the hidden workforce which enables the construction

and support services to function. Following on from his presentation, students then created a poster summarising

the role of Interserve, which Colin judged. I would like to say a big Thank You to Colin for giving up his time to

    support our students.

During the Summer term, Year 11 business students created products to sell as partof the Giving Nation Business Enterprise Challenge. The students sold painted clay

pots, painted sweetie jars and uniquely designed keyrings to staff and students and

raised 100 for Cancer Research UK.

Shopping for a living isnt as easy as it sounds, but it can be a great career! Year 11 Business studentswere visited by guest speaker Susan Randall from Silver Strategies Ltd. Susan held an interactive discussion on

the purchasing profession, followed by purchasing activities for students. The visit enabled students to gain insight

into a career in purchasing. The students learnt a lot from the visit; as one commented , Ive learned that there is

more to buying than I actually thought. It seems interesting; you can travel and make changes to peoples lives. I

also learnt about skills you need to be a buyer, such as confidence and team working.

Walk for Kids 2013Correction: Last term we published an article about a group of students who took part in the Birmingham Walk for

Kids 2013, walking 26 miles to raise funds for charity. Unfortunately we missed Jacob Cliffords name from the

article. We are happy to set the record straight. Well done Jacob for raising 54! Mrs Rose

    Well Done Gemma!

Readers may remember one of our former students, Gemma

Keen, who was fundraising to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and

support a childrens charity. She also spoke at our Year 11

Awards Evening last term. We are pleased to announce that

Gemma successfully completed her mission in the summer

and even took her old Kingsbury tie with her, as can be seen in

    the photo!

Gemma experienced all kinds of terrain during the gruelling

trek up Africas highest mountain, walking an average of 8

hours a day, culminating in a 20 hour overnight trek to the

summit. Not content with that, she then visited one of the

projects run by the charity HOPE for Children. Here, Gemma

describes her experience and has some advice for our current

    students:

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro was without doubt the hardest

thing I have ever done, but despite being mentally drained and

physically exhausted, standing at the top of the mountain was

exhilarating. The money I have raised will go towards a new

building for the Mkombozi project in Tanzania, which supports

orphaned and abandoned children. The expedition changed

me as a person; I have learned to make the most of every

opportunity and to never let anything get in the way of my

goals. When I left Kingsbury, I was told never forget where

youve come from and I never have, it has made me into the

person I am today, just as it will shape all of you. Wherever

you go from here, make sure you do it to the best of your

    ability.

We wish Geography student Gemma all the best in her second

year at the University of Nottingham. Mrs Rose

    Ellens Bike-ability

On 22ndAugust Ellen Ratcliffecompleted Level 3 Bikeability

training as part of the Bike

    North Birmingham Summer

Holiday Cycling programme. From the moment Ellenarrived it was clear she was well prepared for the

training as she was wearing all the right clothing and

her bike was well suited to road cycling. Cycling often

with her father meant that her Level 2 skills were all

well practised, so we could move quickly on to a Level

3 environment. This means busier roads where the

cars will be more frequent and travelling faster, so it

requires a great deal of concentration and awareness.

Ellen demonstrated these qualities in spades and was

soon confidently navigating her way safely round the

    Sutton Ring Road.

In total we cycled 20 miles, and even made time for a

relaxing lunch break in Sutton Park. Well Done Ellen!
