The property on Skyline Drive, overlooks the city of Kingston and be-yond. The client’s son chose a suitable location on the family’s prop-erty that allowed separate vehicular access from Skyline Drive and just enough privacy between the proposed and the existing family dwelling. The proposed home comprises three 20’ containers and one 40’ container. The containers contain all the primary spaces except the entry and dining area, located in the spaces between containers. Unlike spaces within the containers this space

has an independent butterfly roof. Clerestory windows make the roof appear to hover above the metal boxes. Water from the roofs is harvested and stored in tanks in the space below the dwelling. Adjacent to this service area is a multipurpose space which may be used as a home-school for the client’s grandchildren.

Turkish baths, hammams, feature a central, heated stone - the cor-nerstone concept for the Halifax Bathhouse. The program allows for a monumental central heated stone to house all the warm and hot amenities. The stone has an urban presence, as it emerges from and sits taller than the surrounding building, visible to both the city and the harbour. The stone is also visible from various points of the program. Sometimes one is denied a view of it, but then it is revealed once a corner is turned.

The heat-cool-rest cycle is repeats on three floors. The ground floor

has the least intense and the quickest cycle. Runners can pop in from their route along the boardwalk for a quick steam and shower and be on their way. The first floor features a hot pool and other amenities suited for a longer stay. The second floor features the treatment rooms, encouraging even longer stays.

The stone’s footprint is derived from the movement of bathers. Pa-trons act as water to eroding rock, carving out a path and leaving an amorphous shape. The volumes around the stone do not touch, but mimic its cladding on the faces directly opposite to reinforce the

notion of erosion. The remaining surfaces of the adjoining volumes are a smooth, fair faced concrete.

The Highlands Park Gridshell is the fifth of its kind from the Dalhou-sie Coastal Studio in partnership with the Universities of Arizona, North Carolina and Louisiana. The gridshell is a roofed amorphous footprint, nestled between berms located at the beginning of the Salmon Pool Trail. Its construction is a part of a research grant helmed by Dr. Ted Cavanagh. The gridshell comprises red oak laths, layered to created a double-humped shell, attached to curvilinear concrete walls by a stainless steel truss edge beam.

Supreme Ventures, the major gaming company in the island, want-ed to re-brand and promote one of its more successful brands, Just Bet. Supreme Ventures requested a proposal that could be scaled to suit the various locations island-wide and to suit customers across the socio-economic spectrum.

The proposal utilized a kit of parts approach with constant design elements that vary in scale and material finish to suit the locale. Locations ranged from mom-and-pop type storefronts to high-end

casino facilities. The proposal included a kit of parts that would vary in materials appropriate for the location.

We also designed sets for a televised talk-show and live music fes-tival (shown) complete with several smaller stages, providing versa-tility with scenery changes.

Swiss Stores is the purveyor of luxury time pieces in Jamaica, and have recently expanded their brand to include a cafe. The owner wants to expand the brand further to include a luxury, small scale hotel to be attached to its fl agship store in the heart of Downtown Kingston. This move to expand the brand to luxury hotels is specula-tive move amidst talks of renovating our crumbling city centre to be able to accommodate growing interests from cruise lines hoping to make Kingston a destination.

Swiss Stores owns one of many dilapidated buildings in the city cen-tre, which is currently being used as parking. The goal of the hotel proposal was to preserve as many elements as possible from the 100 year old building and extend upward to increase density while allowing views to the city.

The proposal includes two levels to be housed by the existing 24” thick shell and an additional 3 levels in the extension, complete with a rooftop terrace for upscale events.

The shell is largely untouched structurally, however the new slabs and the extension are supported by steel columns that sit inside the shell’s perimeter.
