MESSAGES

What an amazing finish we had for the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters! I am sure many will agree with me that it was a fantastic tournament that came down to the very last hole, with some scintillating golf from some of the best golfers from the Asian tour.

Finland’s Joonas Granberg was indeed a deserving winner, setting a new course record of 10-under-par 62 in the first round and finishing on 15-under-par 273 to win by one shot from thai teenager panuphol pittayarat. As a Malaysian, it was heart-warming to see so many local

professionals make the cut and score well. sukree Othman must be congratulated for finishing joint fifth on 12-under-par and the top Malaysian in the tournament.

I think that hearty congratulations are due to the club management for a job well done in ensuring that the tournament ran with no noticeable glitches. the course was in great condition and that was reflected in the excellent feedback we received from the players, Asian tour officials and fans. the greens were running fast and many players commented that these were the best putting surfaces that they had played on all year.

to all KpGCC members, thank you for your patience and understanding in giving up your golf course during the tournament week. For those of you who served as volunteers, whether members or staff, your contributions went a long way towards the success of the tournament and are immensely appreciated.

I am glad to see that most members are now experts in golf etiquette and the club rules! In fact, I have noticed some members advising their guests to repair ball marks, not to drag their feet on the greens and to smoke only when in the buggy – this is really great to see and I hope that all members will emulate this excellent practice of educating our guests so that we can all enjoy a golfing experience of the highest quality.

Finally, Happy Deepavali to all Hindu members!Happy Golfing!

July was indeed an eventful month for KpGCC with a sling of events taking place, highlighted by the successful staging of the Worldwide Holdings selangor Masters from July 20-23.

What a tournament it was! the week certainly threw up its fair share of thrills, not the least being the new course record of 10-under-par 62 set by the winner, rookie Joonas Granberg from Finland. Granberg set the new record in the first round, scoring one eagle and nine birdies against just one bogey.

It was indeed heartening to see our club’s resident professional, sukree Othman, play so well and close with a sizzling seven-under par 65 to claim joint fifth place honours – his best finish on the Asian tour so far! Hopefully this will spur sukree to achieve greater heights on tour.

Everyone had good comments about our golf course, especially the professionals who were ecstatic over the fast green speeds of up to 13 during the tournament.

Here’s some great news! We have succeeded in securing a reciprocal arrangement with the world-renowned Mission Hills Golf Club in shenzhen, China. the agreement covers seven of the 12 Mission Hills courses, namely the Leadbetter, Duval, Annika, Els, Faldo, Ozaki and Vijay courses. I hope members will make full use of the reciprocal benefit as Mission Hills is also one of the great institutions of world golf, having pioneered the ‘golf boom’ in China.

With yet another year drawing to a close, the Management is organizing a Family Carnival on sunday, December 11 for members, their families and guests. I promise you that this will be an event to remember with loads of fun and activities for the entire family with a Gala Dinner In our new ballroom. I sincerely hope that members will turn out in full force to enjoy true clubbing camaraderie.

As you probably know, the ballroom renovation commenced in August and will complete by the end of October. Be one of the first to come and experience the brand new ballroom.

Wishing all members a Happy Deepavali and looking even further forward, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2012!

WORLDWIDE HOLDINGS SELANGOR MASTERS

Top-class golfing action returned to KpGCC on July 20-23 when the stars of the Asian tour converged at the club in late July for the Us$400,000 Worldwide Holdings selangor Masters.

the tournament certainly lived up to expectations, showcasing some stunning golf from day one when eventual winner Joonas Granberg of Finland took pole position with a scintillating 10-under-par 62. Granberg raked up one eagle and nine birdies against just one bogey to set a new course record.

But it was 18-year-old thai phenomenon panuphol pittayarat who stole the thunder on day two and three with scores of 65 and 67. the talented

teenager’s three-round total of 13-under-par 203 gave him a two-shot lead over Filipino veteran tony Lascuna, with Granberg two shots further adrift along with Aussie-player Adam Groom.

In a rollercoaster final day, it was the 24-year-old Granberg who prevailed with a stellar six-under-par 66 to finish one shot clear of panuphol who shot a closing 71. Groom and Lascuna tied for third on 275.

Granberg, who earned his tour card this year through qualifying school,

became the second Finnish player to win on the Asian tour following Mikko Ilonen in the 2007 Indonesia Open.

“I didn’t think my first win will come so soon. there are so many good players on the Asian tour and I didn’t play very well in my first four events in Asia. I thought I had a chance for a top-10 or top-five but now, I’m a winner,” said Granberg, who pocketed Us$60,902.

Granberg got off to a flying start on the last day with an eagle on his

opening hole from 10 feet. He turned in 33 and made two more birdies on 11 and 14 before pulling off what would turn out to be a decisive birdie at the par three 17th.

panuphol, who is nicknamed “Coconut” by his family, rued his missed chances but took heart from his finish. “the win was there for the taking but I didn’t capitalize on it. Overall I’m still happy, as I know I can play at the highest level,” he said.

Groom looked set to force a playoff at least as he was tied for the lead with

“The golf course is in very good condition and the greens are rolling very fast.” – Lin Wen-Tang, Taiwan

“The greens are really quick here but if you put your ball in position, you have a good chance.” – Pariya Junhasavasdikul, Thailand

the tournament also witnessed a strong showing by the local professionals with no less than 14 Malaysians making the cut which came at even par. sukree Othman played extremely well to earn top Malaysian honours and his best ever finish on the Asian tour, soaring up the leaderboard with a superb closing 65 into joint fifth place with Australian Marcus Both and siddikur of Bangladesh.

SEPTEMBER MEDAL/GOLF CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE

Golf commiTTee chairman's

messaGeFirst and foremost, a big ‘tHANK YOU’ to the management and staff of KpGCC for making the last club championship a huge success. Without doubt, the course was in excellent

condition, just like all the other major championships held at our Club. Keep up the good work and I am sure all members will come out in full support for future editions.

Of late, there have been too many disciplinary cases for a five-star club like ours. Members must behave appropriately, in a manner befitting our Club. We recently had to take disciplinary action against several members for various reasons such as staff abuse, theft, dangerous play, and lack of proper etiquette and decorum while on the club’s premises. We hope that these are isolated cases and will not happen again.

We have also received requests to allow juniors’ participation in the Club Championship. For your

information, your committee’s decision is guided by the Club’s by-laws according to Clause 4.10.1. Any concessions requested by members must be made through appeals to the Club Management before they can be considered and implemented.

Currently, we have more than 30 junior players and if they are all allowed to participate in the club championship, principle members will be deprived of the opportunity to play. this will prompt even more complaints.

In this respect and as a compromise, the Management and your committee have jointly decided that an invitation shall be extended to both the boys’ and girls’ junior champions for next year’s club championship. Nevertheless, principal members must always be given priority. We hope that this will clarify the issue.

september sizzlersThe competition was indeed sizzling at the Club’s september monthly medal competition staged on the sunday morning of 11th september. the battle was really red hot that despite playing the strokeplay format, the competitors managed to register low scores due to the intense challenge.

All medal winners, even the ladies, played under-par to win their respective categories.

this is an indication that a strong but healthy challenge is good for the improvement of sporting skills, more so with golf. It is hoped that future monthly medal competitions would see more improvements among members of the Club.

PuTERI PERMAI MEDAL/KNOW THE RuLES

In this issue, let’s look at a very common and often mistakenly applied rule, i.e. Rule 27 of the Rules of Golf.

One of the most common misconceptions is the belief that “a player may declare the ball lost at anytime, anywhere on the course”. this is certainly not true as the player cannot render a ball lost merely by declaration. The Rules of Golf define a ball lost in 3 ways:-1. If it is not found or identified as his by the player within 5 minutes after the player’s side or his or their caddies have begun to search for it; or2. the player has made a stroke at a substituted ball; or 3. the player has made a stroke at a provisional ball from the place where the original ball is likely to

be or from a point nearer the hole than that place.

so, if a player’s ball may be lost outside a water hazard or may be out of bounds, to save time the player may play another ball provisionally in accordance with Rule 27-1. the player must inform his opponent, fellow competitor or marker that he intends to play a provisional ball and he must play it before he or his partner goes forward to search for the original ball. If he fails to do so and plays another ball, that ball is not a provisional ball and becomes the ball in play under the penalty of stroke and distance (rule 27-1); the original ball is lost.

If a ball is lost or out of bounds, he can put another ball into play under the stroke and distance rule. this means he counts the stroke and

then plays again from the spot where he last played from and adds a penalty stroke. If he does not know the exact spot then he must estimate it. If his last stroke is from the teeing ground, he may play from anywhere within the teeing ground and the ball may be teed.

Many golfers reason that “I know my ball is lost somewhere around here” and the easiest thing to do is to drop a ball in the same area and add a penalty stroke. this may seem expedient, but if the player were to do so, he would be playing from a wrong place – which is a two-stroke penalty. What is even worse is that this could well be construed as a serious breach of the rules and – if not corrected before playing from the next tee – he will be disqualified!

so let’s learn and apply the rules correctly!

ISKANDAR JOHOR OPEN (IJO)

oct-dec 2011 oasis permai 11

Golf fans will be in for a big treat this November when the fifth edition of the Iskandar Johor Open (IJO) tees-off with a fattened purse of Us$2 million and, more significantly, as part of the European tour following a joint-sanctioning agreement with the Asian tour.

For the second year running, the tournament will be staged at the highly-rated Horizon Hills Golf & Country Club in Nusajaya. In last year’s tournament, popular Irish star padraig Harrington ended a two-year title drought with a winning total of 20-under-par 268 at the 6,271-metre Ross Watson-designed layout. He finished three shots ahead of the talented young Korean Noh seung-yul, winner of the 2010 Maybank Malaysian Open.

the IJO has also moved away from its traditional October dates to accommodate both tours and will be staged on 17th - 20th November immediately after the Barclays singapore Open.

three-time Major winner Harrington is eager to return to defend his title: “Any tournament win is special but after a two-year wait, it felt especially good. I very much enjoy my travels to Asia to compete with their best players and experiencing the local culture,” said the 40-year-old golfer from Dublin.

at Horizon Hills, Johor chief minister Dato’ Abdul Ghani Othman lauded the growth of the event. “the Iskandar Johor Open has been an astounding success over the past few years, and naturally it fuels further growth for the championship as it rises to prominence,” he said.

“It’s certainly great news that Harrington will be defending his title, and his presence is a fitting testament to the prestige of the championship. I’m sure more top players will be announced in the coming months as preparation goes full steam ahead,” added the minister, who is also the chairman of the IJO organising committee.

the first three editions of the tournament were staged at the Royal Johor Country Club. the inaugural

event in 2007 offered a purse of Us$300,000 and saw Filipino Artemio Murakami win by one shot. A year later, south African star Retief Goosen ended a 21-month title drought with a two-stroke victory, earning Us$79,250 from the Us$500,000 total purse.

In 2009, prize money was raised to Us$1 million and Korean star KJ Choi won the weather-interrupted event to collect Us$158,500 – a portion of which he donated to various Johor-based charities.

When Harrington won last year, he pocketed Us$198,125 from the total purse of Us$1.25 million. this year, the winner will take home a whopping Us$317,000 (approximately RM954,000).

“It is satisfying to note that in five short years, the Iskandar Johor Open has reached such amazing heights. Co-sanctioning by the European and Asian tours, more lucrative prize money on offer and new dates will definitely draw the world’s top players to Johor this November,” said Dato’ Abdul Ghani.

tang Meng Loon, the general manager of Horizon Hills, was thrilled at the prospect of hosting the tournament again. “Hosting the Iskandar Johor Open last year was a great experience for us all at Horizon Hills Golf & Country Club. We look forward to welcoming many world-class players to our club for another fabulous week this year and we are determined to make it an even better show,” he said.

social chairman's messaGeComing into the final quarter of the year, we can proudly say that 2011 has been an extremely

eventful and memorable year for KpGCC.

the club has received many accolades and a lot of praise for our successful hosting of the Asian tour’s Worldwide Holdings selangor Masters. I am sure all members are equally proud that KpGCC is continually being held in high esteem by both the media and the public.

the club recently hosted a BukaPuasa event for the Alkhairiyah orphanage during Ramadhan.

Members, well-wishers and corporate friends generously contributed towards making the event a very special occasion. I am very pleased to note that KpGCC has always been very active in carrying out Corporate social Responsibility (CsR) activities. It is also very gratifying to see that members of KpGCC are always very supportive of events held for charitable causes. My sincere thanks to all and I hope that the club management and all members will continue to encourage, participate in and support all these noble events and activities as part of our voluntary contributions towards the betterment of society.

KpGCC is almost 14 years old and parts of her are ageing.

therefore, it is necessary that partial refurbishment, remodelling and renovations be carried out to give the club a fresh look. New furniture has been brought in and the main function/ballroom is being extensively renovated. I am very sure that the management will continue its efforts to improve the facilities for the benefit of all the members.

the club has also successfully conducted all its annual sports championships for the year 2011. My heartiest congratulations to all the champions and I am sure all of you are deserving winners.

to those who did not win, do not despair – there is always next year!

LIAISON CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE/BALLROOM RENOVATION

I hope that it is still not too late for me to congratulate our new Club Champion, Johnny Wong shou Cherng, Ladies Club

Champion Khairunhanisah Azlan Hanif and finally Ng thin poh for winning the senior category. I am sure it was another very challenging championship and I heard that even if our previous champion, Jimmy Chia, were to have participated this year, he would have found it tough to beat our new champion who is a former professional.

We are already into the last quarter of 2011 and, looking back, we started the year by winning the 'Best Golf Course in Malaysia' award in the Golf Malaysia Golf Course poll for the fourth time. We also won the awards for 'Best Maintained Golf Course' and 'Best Customer service'. this year, we had only one major golf tournament on our course, namely the Worldwide Holdings

selangor Masters, and based on the feedback from the players I dare say that we have the best greens in the whole of Malaysia.

KpGCC has also introduced online golf booking for the benefit of members who are staying further away from Kota Kemuning. For those who are not aware of the seriousness of weekend golf booking, I would like to inform you that for saturday morning flights, you have to arrive at the Club at 4.45am on thursday morning to book; if you arrive after 5.30am, chances are you might not even get a flight.

I hope you have noticed that we have a fleet of new buggies, a new LCD television at the golf registration waiting area and new furniture at the Golfers' terrace and golf registration area.

I am proud to note that all our monthly medals are extremely popular with members willing to queue on the reserve list. the management has also arranged more reciprocal/affiliation agreements with other prestigious golf clubs for the benefit and enjoyment of

our members. Another piece of great news is that our KpGCC membership rate has been increased to RM50,000.

I would also like to take this opportunity to request all residents (presumably members of KpGCC) who are living beside the golf course to give due consideration to the appearance of their backyards. please try and refrain from placing unwanted flower pots, used plastic bottles and debris at the back of their houses as this is a real eyesore. Kindly be reminded that your backyard is the front view from the golf course!

On behalf of the liaison committee I wish to thank all our esteemed members for their support and co-operation throughout the year 2011.

I would also like to take this opportunity to wish all our Muslim members a belated SelamatHariRayaAidilfitri. Last but not least, Happy Deepavali to our Hindu members, Merry Christmas to our Christian members and to all other members a Happy and prosperous 2012!

Ballroom renovations on scheduleMembers will be glad to know that the ballroom renovation is proceeding on schedule for full completion by 1st November this year.

Once the renovation is complete, KpGCC will have one of the best ballrooms among golf clubs in the country.

Members are thus encouraged to hold their events such as company dinners, weddings and other celebratory occasions in this new ballroom.

In the meantime, the management apologises for any inconvenience caused by the renovation works.

In keeping with the spirit of the Holy Month of Ramadhan, KpGCC hosted fifty orphans from the Rumah Kebajikan Anak Yatim Alkhairiyah to a ‘Buka puasa’ buffet spread on August 10.

the children had a great time enjoying the ‘1Malaysia satu Kampung’ Ramadhan buffet dinner at the poolside Café. the vast variety of local and western delights on offer among others were, dagingmasakbahmiah, murtabakayam, gulaikawah and roast lamb, complemented by more with 20 food stalls that added an authentic ambience to the set-up. As they savoured the food, the children were entertained with traditional music by a ‘live’ Ghazal band.

After finishing their meals and prayers, the children were presented with duitraya packets and goodie bags by Kota permai general manager tang Meng Loon and senior club manager saha Kamarudin. Also present to share in the joyous occasion were management staff as well as members of the social, golf and liaison committees. the Club extends its appreciation to Frankie Choo of transview Golf, who donated 50 pG backpacks for the orphans.

Festive charity events such as this form part of the club’s initiatives to encourage social responsibility among members and staff.

AWARDS PRESENTED:

The young athletes proudly pose with their prizesTo honour the Club’s junior racquets and swimming championship competitors, a Junior sports Gala Night was held on 10th september. It was an evening of camaraderie and sportsmanship among the young athletes after battling among each other in the pool and on the courts.

the gala night, also an awards giving ceremony, saw 140 of the young athletes revel through the evening celebrating the successful conclusion of an enjoyable sporting year for them at the Club.

the Club, as mentioned at the ceremony by General Manager, tang Meng Loon is proud that its young members showcased the best athletic talent and sportsmanship while competing in the challenges.

Fully supportive of the Club’s junior championships, tang also praised the sports staff and coaches for exposing the young athletes to rigorous training and practice sessions.

“their efforts have contributed in raising the overall standard of competitions and building stamina which is vital in youth development,” tang said.

He further said that competitive sports make the young athletes strong and teach them to accept defeat and celebrate victory. these lessons, he added, will later become building blocks of success in life.

Later on, the juniors, their parents, staff and coaches were entertained with a magic show and performances presented by a number of the young athletes' compatriots.

BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIP/NEW FITNESS PROGRAMME

Feathers flew, literally, during the 2011 KpGCC Badminton Championship in July as the Club’s top shuttlers showed off their skills at the sports complex courts.

In the Men’s Doubles open championship, the pair of Khoo teik Leat and Khoo say Lock emerged as the champions by beating teo Boon teong and Hew sin Mee in the final. the other finalists were terence Eng Chize Hong/Wilson Ow Chee seong and Yap Kah Hin/Wong Voon Chien.

Yap Kah Hin and Lim Ah peen combined well to win the Men’s Doubles combined age 90 & above category, fighting off Hew sin Mee and Goh say Ban in the final. the pairs of Goh Meng Keong/Goh Khir Chaye and Bernard Wang/Ong sin Oong also made it to the finals.

the final category for players aged a combined 100 years & above saw the skills of Chan tat Kong and tan Guan tee prevail over Lim Ah peen (the 90 & above champion) and Goh Khir Chaye in the final. Finalist honours went to Albert Leong/Ong sin Oong and Goh say Ban/Chong Guan Hoe.

Veteran shuttler and Club member, Ong sin Oong did the country and club proud again as he succeeded to get to the doubles semi-final of the fifth World senior Badminton Championship at the Richmond Olympic Oval, Vancouver, Canada, recently. the tournament saw 700 participants form 39 countries taking part in the competition.

together with his partner Woon tong Yeong, the duo combined effectively to reach the doubles semi-final in the 60-64 years old category. En route to the last-four stage, the Malaysian pair upset third seeds Hubert Miranda-Nadkarni shirish of India in three games (21-14, 12-21, 22-20) in the quarter-final.

However, sin Oong and partner; who were runner-up at the All-England seniors and World Chinese Badminton championships last year; stumbled to top seeded pair of seri Chintanaseri-

Chaisak thongdejsri of thailand in the semis 11-21, 13-21.

sin Oong in an interview said his pair just didn’t have the answer to the powerful play of the thais. Although they tried to raise their game, their efforts fell just short.

“It’s just one of those things when you just can’t do anything to your opponent. tong Yeong and I did everything to avoid getting beaten but if there’s any consolation, we were beaten by the eventual champions of the tournament,” said the jovial sin Oong.

the Chintaseri-Chaisak partnership was also the defending champions of the previous World senior Badminton Championship played in spain in 2009. the duo represented thailand at the 1968 thomas Cup qualifiers.

sin Oong who is a member of the Club since 2000, said retirees should not get idle after retirement and to

remain physically active. At 62-years old, sin Oong is as fit as a fiddle due to his healthy lifestyle.

“Any physical activity is good for health. Next to badminton my wife and I are into ballroom dancing. When I can’t play competitive badminton anymore, I might take up competitive dancing then,” sin Oong added.

Retired as an executive director of a subsidiary of a public-listed company since 2004, sin Oong started to play competitive badminton again from 2005. He played doubles for pulau pinang in the 1968 Agung’s Cup competition and represented the country at the Asian schools Under-19 tournament in Japan that same year.

The Royal Klang Club hosted a badminton tournament among notable clubs in the country, recently. Held on 16th and 17th september, KpGCC sent 10 representatives to vie for honours at the competition.

Our members displayed good fighting spirit and put up a good showing at the tournament participated by 16 clubs divided into four groups. the result shows that our Club is at par with the rest in terms of skills and talents in the games we compete in.

In July, Kota permai successfully

hosted the Worldwide Holdings

selangor Masters. I was privileged to

play a small role in assisting with the

scoring and on the last day, I followed

the second or third last flight.

It was with great pleasure that I

watched sukree Othman’s meteoric

rise up the leaderboard to eventually

tie the lead with three holes to play. I

was very excited for him and

wondered if perhaps the shock of

leading might have played a role in

his eventual joint fifth place finish.

Recently, I sat down with sukree

and had a casual chat about his

experience which went as follows:

ROB: Was this your first cut on the Asian Tour?SuKREE: Actually no, this was my third

cut made out of four events, but of

course this result was my best finish.

ROB: So Sukree, what in your opinion made the difference?SuKREE: I think playing on my home

course as well as the confidence I

have gained from doing well recently

in local events made the difference. I

have been working hard on my swing

and it has improved, but I think my

mental approach was the key factor.

One can’t always put it down to one

thing. I would have to say the help I

have received from Kota permai and

the use of its facilities, the three-year

sponsorship from New Wing Energy

and my equipment sponsors

taylorMade and Crest Link also helped

create a more stable atmosphere for

me and all of this came together for

this event.

ROB: On the last day what were your expectations?SuKREE: to make the top 10.

ROB: And when things started happening for you out there, did you reassess or change your mindset?SuKREE: After nine holes when I

reached 9-under I realised that I had a

genuine chance of a top-10 finish. My

game plan did not change. I

continued with my shot by shot

approach. However, coming up the

15th I saw my name on the

leaderboard at 12-under just one

behind the leader

and on that hole I

chipped in for

birdie. then the

realisation that I was leading hit home.

I dropped a shot on the next hole

because my mental approach

changed. Dropping that shot brought

me back down to earth and I returned

to playing shot for shot. It was a great

experience and this has given me the

confidence and belief that I can

compete with the top players on the

Asian tour.

ROB: Before the event I was chatting to a fellow countryman competitor about the course and I warned him that the course was not long, but the greens are slick and will bite you. After his first round, his comment was that the greens looked slow but they were amazingly slick. Was this your opinion too?SuKREE: Yes, I would agree – certainly

amongst the fastest and trickiest

greens on the tour and in great

condition too.

ROB: Well Sukree, I am sure most of the members who know you are very proud of you and would like to congratulate you as well as wish you well for the future. Well done, Pro!

TEE TALK

MAN of the MOMENT

Sukree Othman

this year the junior programme has been stable in terms

of support from players, but in the next few months some

new players are set to start competing and boost the

numbers and the competitiveness.

some new innovations are:

• The 2011 Order of Merit winners for U/12 and U/19 will

receive recognition in the first event of 2012.

• The Club will be running an 18-hole Club

Championship for juniors this December and the gross

winners of the boys’ and girls' categories will then be

allowed to compete in the adult 2012 Club

Championship. Only members will be eligible.

• I am introducing a new division called “The Tee

peggers”. this is an opportunity for juniors who are not at

the stage to play competitively off the grass. they will be

allowed to tee up at the beginning of the fairway and

play off tee pegs all the way to the green. the intention

is to introduce the newer players to competitive play

and for them to have fun while making new friends as

well as provide an incentive to continue practicing on

the range. please look at the board for more info about

this.
