1.2ABOUT US

CONTENTSABOUT US / INTRODUCTION Cereal crops Research Institute, is situated on left bank of

Kabul River, near village Pirsabak. Three (3) Kms on the East from Nowshera and (8) Km from Risalpur. Its elevation is 288 meters (945 Ft) and located on the intersection of longitude 740 E and latitude 320 N. In 1955, this institute started research work as “HYBRID MAIZE FARM” when it was handed over to Agriculture Department from Evacuee property (Auqaf) Department.

In 1972, it was upgraded to “MAIZE AND MILLET” RESEARCH STATION. In 1980, it became a full-fledged research institute as “CEREAL CROPS RESEARCH INSTITUTE”. The total area of the institute is 437 acres.This is the only commodity institute in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province and considered as the Centre of Excellence for wheat and maize in the province.

The Cereal Crops Research Institute (CCRI), Pirsabak, Nowshera, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been serving the Province and ultimately Country in boosting Cereal Crops production primarily focusing on Wheat and Maize production since 1958. The institute focuses on the development of small grain cereal germplasm with improved quality and wide adaptability. The institute also has the privilege of developing maize hybrids in the Public Sector for the first time that are benefiting the poor farming communities of the Province. In addition to this, the institute staff plays an active part in graduate/post graduate research in scientific cooperation with Provincial/National Universities, the practical introduction of scientific results and technical knowledge.

Functions A. Variety development: Development of early, mid and late varieties of wheat, maize and barley, which are suitable for existing cropping pattern of the area.

Seed Production: Production of Pre-basic and basic seed of maize and wheat.

B. Production technology:- To improve the agronomic practices for wheat and maize plant. - Production technology integrated crop management.

C. Dissemination of new technology: Adaptive Research Plots, field days, training courses, workshop and mass media like Radio Talk etc.

Objectives i. Development and maintenance of wheat, maize and barley that are high yielding and resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses for the province.

ii. Provision of cheaper quality seed of wheat, maize and barley for the poor farming community of Khyber

Pakhtunkhwa.iii. Improving the production technology of cereals by farmers’

awareness programs and trainings.Vision/ Future Plan i. To step up the yield of wheat, maize and barley with that of

developed countries.ii. To strengthen the agriculture in the province and ultimately

help the poor farming community by providing them quality seeds on low prices.

The research station primarily develops BNS, pre-basic, basic and certified seed, which is then handed over to Agriculture extension department for production on large scales and then dissemination to farming community, farmers can also purchase the seed from the station directly through storekeeper via cash payments on fixed public sector rates.

How can local private seed companies demand seed from our research station?

The local/national/private seed companies can register themselves by providing seed company registration form and a letter of interest to director, CCRI, afterwards they can put up their demand by writing a letter to DCCRI and obtain pre-basic/basic seed upon availability.
