    Transportation Introduction

Transportation: Time-space compression and the right to the city

Hong Kong is known for its sophisticated public transportation networks. Train lines form the core of all major developments and bus services are very efficient. Almost all places in the city are very well connected, and public transportation usage is amongst the highest in the world. This wide use of public transportation is often cited as one of the most environmentally sustainable aspects of Hong Kong. At the heart of this high-density transportation urban structure is an urban governance model where real estate development subsidises costs of the construction of public transportation.

Kowloon Station is a direct expression of this development model. It is part of a large development on the reclaimed area of West Kowloon, which includes Elements Mall, exclusive high-rise residential towers, and commercial towers, such as the 500+ meter landmark International Commerce Centre (ICC) tower. It is adjacent to the Western Harbour tunnel on its west, with the future High Speed Rail Terminus to its east. This complex is a multimodal transportation hub for a full range of travellers, territorially, regionally, and internationally.

The advancement of technology and increased speeds of transportation systems has changed the way we move through our city. Not only does it change the perception of distance but its physical expression large highways, tunnels, etc. has also altered the organisation of neighbourhoods. What are some other impacts these complex networks of transportation have on sustainability?

1 TIME-SPACE COMPRESSIONTraveling has become increasingly easier with the advancement of transportation infrastructure. In the same time frame, you will be able to cover different distances depending on the mode of transportation you choose. Space is compressed and distance is now measured by time rather than physical space.

2 TRANSPORTATION NETWORKSAt Kowloon Station, you encounter multiple modes of transportation, making it very convenient for cross-modal traveling. Here, you will find local and cross-border buses, MTR connections, and the Airport Express. The future Express-Rail Link station next-door ties into these existing transportation infrastructures, making it one of the most integrated transportation hubs in the world.

5 MASS TRANSIT RAILWAYThe MTR network carries 4.9 million passengers every day. This primarily underground network is integrated with other modes of ground transportation that connect to every corner of the city. Designated railways avoid ground traffic and increase the speed of traveling throughout the territory.

6 CROSS HARBOUR TUNNELSThis 100m-wide highway and the super-sized advertising boards are designed for high-speed vehicles. The oversized road and sunken highway corridor separates the city from the waterfront.

7 WALKINGIn an environment that privileges motorised vehicles, pedestrian experience is often compromised. Long footbridges have been built in attempt to connect Kowloon Station to its surrounding neighbourhoods, but the vast sizes of infrastructures and buildings still create a significant separation that is difficult to overcome.

    Transportation Discussion

01 Recall the shopping malls and podium gardens that you have visited in the past. Would you consider them public spaces? What are the key characteristics of public spaces?

02 How do you describe how far a place is? By time or physical difference? Why?

03 What types of streets/roads/pedestrian passages do you see? How are they connected?

07 What kinds of transportation networks are here? And who are the people that use them? What kinds of spaces or infrastructure are required for them? How does this impact the rest of Hong Kong?

04 Draw a simple diagram of your travelled route, with identifiable landmarks and the amount of time spent in between. Once you are finished, also include in your diagram how you might travel to Central, Nathan Road, and Shenzhen, and the estimated time of travel.

05 At Kowloon Station, what is the relationship between commercial spaces and outdoor public spaces? Which ones are have more people, and what are they doing? Why? Who can access these places?

06 Describe how people interact in the spaces designed for transit. How is this different from other types of public spaces?
