Maandagoggend se voorval was glo net één van bykans ’n week

My Vriend, My Broer is die vierde pennevrug van Rautenbach.
. Louis Rautenbach werk voltyds in ’n finansiële spesialiteitsvelden is deeltyd by geestelike werk betrokke.

THE lovely Church of St Francis of Assisi inHumansdorp received an interior facelift -getting the Michelangelo treatment from in-ternational interior designer andartist, Carelvan der Westhuizen.
The project involved the creation of a mag-nificent three-dimensional land- and sky-scape mural at the rear of the sanctuary, thecreation of sandstone walls and architraveson both sides of the sanctuary and at variousother locations in the church, as well as thepainting of incredibly detailed three-dimen-sional murals. These murals alongside themosaics of theSacredHeart andOurLady, ap-pears to have been carved from sandstone.
“This vast project was completed in just 12days. Van der Westhuizen worked up to 18hours a day to get it completed in time for thecelebration of the fourth anniversary of thededication of St Francis of Assisi Church onDecember 18, and of course, theChristmas fes-tivities,” says Parish secretary Frank Nunan.
“This project, the dream and vision of ourpastor Fr Paul Fahy, was conceived some

ROSLYN BAATJIES
Sarah Baartman was ’n Khoi-vrou wat indie vroeë 19de eeu ’n groot aantreklikheidby ’n fratsvertoning in Europa geword hetweens haar groot agterstewe.
years ago when Fr Fahy met Van der West-huizen at the home of long-time mutualfriends, Veronica and the late Terry Witts-tock, in Knysna.
“Earlier this year, during one of Van derWesthuizen’s visits to Knysna, Wittstockbrought him to Humansdorp to see the churchand he immediately saw the potential. He sayshehad long felt theneed to give somethingbackin thanksgiving for his God-given talents, anddecided this was going to be the project - hisgift to the Kouga Catholic Community.”
VanderWesthuizen says hewas “not alone”during this project - that he was constantlyguided and inspired by the Holy Spirit.
He began his career as an architectural stu-dent, inspired by his architect dad, who sadlypassed away when he was 14.
“I could draw a complete set of house plansby the time I was 16,” says Van der Westhuiz-en. It was in those early years that he realisedthat he had a huge artistic talent - and madeanother, not so pleasant discovery - he is com-pletely dyslexic, experiencing great difficultywith reading andwriting. “I realised then that
I was destined to express myself visually.”Following his military service, during
which he was employed in the army architec-tural unit, he changed direction slightly andbecame a theatrical set designer, working forthe Roodepoort Municipal Theatre for 13years, during which time he was involved inthe production of 39 operas.
He thenmoved into interior design, and aft-er having worked on a number of projects inSouthAfrica, was invited to collaborate on aninterior design commission in the UnitedStates.
He eventually acquiredhisGreenCard, andUS Citizenship, and now operates out of Mi-ami, Florida, under the name of Carel WestDesign Studio. He returns to South Africa ona regular basis to undertake design assign-ments.
“The Kouga Catholic Community is hon-oured and privileged to have been the recipi-ents of such a magnificent gift, and will beeternally grateful to Van der Westhuizen andWittstock for the unique legacy they left us,”says Nunan.

Members of the public are hereby notified of and invited to comment on/object tothe outcomes of the public hearings on the naming of the new municipality whichwill be formed as a result of the amalgamation of Baviaans, Camdeboo and Ikwezilocal municipalities.
All stakeholders and communities in the three local municipalities were encouragedto submit proposed names for the new municipality. A media release was issuedand an advertisement was placed in newspapers circulating in the area, callingfor proposals for a suitable name for the new municipality. The advertisementappeared in these newspapers on the 20th November 2015. The media releasewas shared with media houses and also on the respective municipal websites andsocial media platforms.
A series of public hearings, ward meetings and stakeholder engagements wereheld in all wards in the three local municipalities in November 2015 in order toreceive proposals for the name of the new municipality.
Stakeholders were given a number of guiding principles to consider whenproposing a name, viz:
• Consideration of an Icon of that municipal area which could be representative ofthe democratic dispensation that seeks to promote national unity and cohesion;
• A geographical feature that seeks to embrace the diverse cultures, and in doingso, shape people’s national character;
• It could be a well thought out name that facilitates healing, upholding symbolicrestitution;
• The name should seek to unite people of the new municipality; or
• A name that has potential to bring investment and promote tourism.
A total of 649 proposals for a name were received from stakeholders of the threemunicipalities. After reviewing all the submissions, the Name Change Committee, which comprises of members of the three local municipalities, reached consensuson the following name:
