The Kosher River Cruise

Kosher River Cruises is the only kosher tour operator that charters entire ships for each of its cruise vacations. Unlike other kosher Jewish cruise programs that take place on larger ships—where 50+ kosher passengers share a vessel with thousands of other guests—Kosher River Cruise tours host a maximum of 50 (expeditions vessels) to 140 (established waterways) guests on a 5-Star luxury vessel reserved just for us.

Having our very own ship creates a unique sense of community as we travel together with like-minded individuals, creating special connections with fellow passengers. Shabbat onboard becomes a special and memorable experience, bringing us all together for a magical event with friends, old and new.

The Perfect Luxury VacationAfter more than 30 years of operating kosher land tours and the very first to begin operating large cruise programs, we have created the perfect luxury vacation. We achieve and maintain the highest standards of luxury, education and quality. No more sitting in a large hotel, moving from point to point, packing and unpacking, and going from restaurant to restaurant with an ever-changing level of quality. Now you will wake each morning, eager to explore a new city or town filled with history and heritage.

Imagine yourself watching the river from your balcony, taking you to new places, revealing charming landscapes and unforgettable places. Meanwhile, you can sit back in total relaxation. The elegant comforts and personal service aboard your Kosher River Cruise create an oasis of inspiration and calm. Experience wonderful, relaxing, luxurious world travel with the sheer ease of river transport.

All-Inclusive LuxuryKosher River Cruises includes it all. Unlike many large cruise programs with numerous add-on costs for excursions, amenities, activities, drinks and Internet, we include everything on a Kosher River Cruise. From the minute you arrive to the minute you depart the ship, we will take care of you. All of our cruises include our own specially developed shore excursions, exploring both Jewish and secular sites, open bar or drink credit, Internet, educational programming and lectures, special guests and entertainment. Every ship is a luxury 5-star vessel complete with high-end amenities and accommodations, as well as exceptional service from your Kosher River Cruise management team.

Exceptional ServiceThe Kosher River Cruise team accompanies each cruise to ensure every detail is perfect. Our team is made up of only the highest quality guides, educators, rabbinic and cruise directors, including our seasoned kitchen team led by master kosher chef Malcom Green, who creates delicious kosher cuisine with modifications made for most specialty diets.

Fabulous Kosher Cuisine Unlike typical land tours, which travel from point to point with a caterer tagging along or tours that provide cold kosher items from the standard hotel breakfast buffet, we bring to you an exceptional Culinary Event.

We are able to maintain the highest quality and luxury standard of cuisine. Master Kosher Chef Malcolm Green leads our cooking team to create an unforgettable dining experience. We have taken fine dining that symbolizes riverboat cruising and combined it with expert kosher chefs to create the perfect kosher cruise.

KashrutOur Rav Ha Machshir, Rabbi Yizchak A. Fischer and his team, ensure the highest standards of kashrut. All meat products are Shechita Bet Yosef, all dairy is Cholov Yisroel, and all breads and cakes are Pas Yisroel. Products and dry stores come from supervised sources in the U.K. and Israel (outside of our European destinations, our product may be sourced from additional suppliers always under the highest level of rabbinical supervision).

Non-Stop Education, Activities and Adventure – All IncludedFrom morning until night, we have every moment programed. We offer unique land excursions, fabulous entertainment, and informative education lectures from world-class historians, speakers and special guests. Our cruises have something for everyone.

• Land tours: Every cruise includes our famous land tours. Kosher River Cruises has spent years preparing and perfecting each destination we travel, searching for hidden and off-the-beaten-path places, points of interest and peoples (Jewish communities) not found in any guide book or on standard tours.

• Unlike any other tour or cruise program, we combine both Jewish (where available) and secular sites. Not only do we explore each region’s Jewish history and heritage, but we immerse ourselves in it. Over the years in Jewish travel, we have cultivated our access to local Jewish communities and their leaders along the rivers we travel. This provides our guests with unique insight and a connection to fellow Jews across the globe, making for a memorable and once-in-a-life-time travel experience.

• Moving Experiences: We develop our programs—not just as a tour vacation, but also as a life-affirming experience. From emotional ceremonies with Jewish war veterans on Omaha Beach, paying tribute to the fallen Jewish heroes of D-Day and WWII on Frances Seine River, to a tribute to the great Simon Wiesenthal with the leaders of the Wiesenthal Center at Mauthausen along the Danube, to visiting schools and interacting with the children of Cambodia and Vietnam along the Mekong River in our powerful and meaningful tikun olam programming, we guarantee a travel experience like no other that will create memories to last a lifetime.

• Education: Our education program takes place both on and off the boat. Our special guests, speakers and guides on each cruise offer guests an in-depth, unique, and entertaining insight into the history and heritage of the places we explore. Instead of just a quick tour or brief overview found on other tours and cruise programs, our mission is to supply our guests with the opportunity to create a connection and true understanding of each destination we explore.

• Activities & Entertainment: From bus and walking tours to bike rides, hikes, shopping, cooking classes, symphonies, comedies, sing-a-longs, and religious programming, which are all included, our programming is consistently filled with variety and options.

Creating A Jewish CommunityProviding an entire ship just for our guests results in a truly unique travel experience. Almost instantaneously, we become a community of like-minded Jewish individuals on a journey of exploration, discovery and growth. From meaningful religious and Shabbat programming to onboard entertainment, delicious kosher meals and relaxation time with old and new friends, guests can experience what Kosher River Cruises are all about.

Experience: More than 30 years in the Kosher Travel & Cruise BusinessWhen you choose Kosher River Cruises, you choose the most established kosher tour operator with more than 30 years’ experience. We develop and run each program using only our in-house staff of travel experts, mangers and catering team. We do not sell or buy other company’s products. As a fully established tour operator, we comply with the highest level of certification as a fully licensed, insured and bonded U.S. tour operator, so your well-being and investment is always protected.

Numerous kosher tour programs are run by caterers, travel agents or non-licensed individuals—many of whom do not have the experience, expertise or certification to run such operations or to handle the issues that may occur. When you choose a Kosher River Cruise, you choose an established tour company with offices in Seattle, Los Angeles, Dublin, Prague and Israel that have the expertise and foundation to provide guests with piece of mind, as well as an amazing travel experience!

Jewish ProvenceTo the French, Provence evokes the books of Marcel Pagnol, the Occitan language, and the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Cézanne. But it is also rich in Jewish history. Jews lived in this part of southern France in comparative peace until they were expelled in the 14th century, when the region was united with the Kingdom of France. These banished Jews found refuge in the lands ruled by the Popes of Avignon — today’s Department of the Vaucluse – in the cities of Avignon, Carpentras, l’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, and Cavaillon. The cities became known throughout the Jewish world as the Arba Kehillot, the four communities, and the Jews who lived therein became known as des Juifs du Pape (the Pope’s Jews). The Jews of the Arba Kehillot spoke a Judeo-Provencal dialect known as shuadit and developed traditions very different from those in Jewish communities in other parts of Europe. Come along with us as we explore the Arba Kehilot and the wonders of this region for a unique, educational and relaxing holiday down the Rhone! Our all-inclusive program includes delicious Glatt Kosher cuisine, on-board synagogue with daily minyanim, engaging lectures entertainment, open bar, on-board programming, and our famous local touring in Arles, Avignon, Cavaillon, Carpentras, Viviers, Tournon and Lyon as we explore the area’s fascinating and pivotal history of the Jewish people.

The Angkor Temple Complex has been designated a UN Heritage Site and consists of hundreds of structures from the 9th to the 14th century that tell the story of the rise and fall of the Khmer empire. These vast collections of historical structures are decorated with intricately carved, priceless Khmer artwork that provide an archaeological and pictorial history of an empire that ruled much of southeast Asia for five centuries. Structures range from partially renovated temples, pagodas and imperial residences to recently discovered ruins that have been virtually untouched for the last 500 years. Once a great, conquering seafaring nation, Portugal has a history and culture as proud and as intrepid as any in Europe. Today, large tracts of it remain unchanged, almost like a land out of time, where beautiful traditions survive the ravages of progress. From rolling

vineyards to grand historic structures, magic waterscapes to endlessly engaging vistas, Portugal’s lazy charm tends to seep into your consciousness slowly, seducing you without you realizing it. However, by the time you’ve fully explored its wondrous valleys and friendly village communities, you’ll find yourself thoroughly and hopelessly in love. The Douro is one of the major rivers flowing through the Iberian Peninsula. This sun-kissed waterway starts its journey in northern-central Spain before passing through mainland Portugal to its final outlet in the UNESCO World Heritage City of Porto. An important maritime port and commercial town, Porto was one of the cities where Jews settled in Portugal. The history of the Jewish community of the capital of the northern region is inseparable from the history of the Hebrew presence in Portugal. In the Douro region there are also villages, cities and small towns where important Jewish communities once lived. Join Kosher River Cruises as we discover a heritage filled cruise with memories recalling a community that settled in this country between the 5th and 15th centuries.

Jewish History & HeritageThe Sephardic Jews contributed in many different ways to Portuguese culture in Porto and along the Douro. Protected by the monarchy, the Jews – philosophers, humanists, scientists and merchants – were decisive in several important moments of Portuguese history, namely for their financial and scientific contributions during the Discoveries. The Jews worshipped in secret even after the Portuguese kings ordered their deportation from the country, following the events in Spain in 1497. While it is true that some Jews converted to Catholicism, becoming New-Christians and that many left the country, many others stayed and kept their faith in secret. From those days, symbolic features and engravings can still be seen in the old Jewish quarters throughout this region; from Mezuzot carved on buildings’ stone doorframes to the names of streets indicating the existence of a Jewish community. Join Kosher River Cruises for a luxury cruise filled with discovery, history and heritage on one of Europe’s most stunning scenic rivers.

The Journey27

Page 28: Kosher River Cruises · Kosher River Cruises has spent years preparing and perfecting each destination we travel, searching for hidden and off-the-beaten-path places, points of interest

Day 1: Tuesday - PortoWelcome Aboard! Check in at Vila Nova de Gaia pier then set sail to Entre-os-Rios, welcome orientation & dinner

Day 2: Wednesday - Barca D’ AlvaEnjoy a leisurely day soaking up the beauty of the Douro River as you cruise to Barca d’Alva. Sailing east along the Douro, you will see dramatic, sheer rock formations, picturesque terraced vineyards and graceful bridges and trestles along the way; you will also pass through two of the river’s locks at the Valeira and Pocinho Dams. We’ll arrive in early evening at Barca d’Alva, not far from the Spanish border. On board activates include engaging lectures, Portuguese lessons, cooking demonstration and evening Flamenco show.Day 3: Thursday - Salamanca (Spain) Salamanca, once a seat of Jewish learning, and one of Europe’s oldest college towns. In expression of both these facets, a statue just outside the 12th century University honors Fray Luís de León, the poet-priest and Hebrew scholar who descended from Jewish conversos (forcibly converted Spanish Jews). This translator of the first Spanish version of the “Song of Songs” was dragged off by the Inquisition (he spent years imprisoned before returning to his classroom). Begin with a walking tour of the Old Town and see the Plaza Mayor (one of Spain’s most delightful public spaces), the eye-catching Casa de las Conchas, the popular Art Nouveau/Art Déco Museum, and the Jewish Quarter – a well-preserved enclave, one of the oldest in the Spanish Empire, that is Salamanca’s jewel and main attraction.Day 4: Friday - BelmonteThis minute locale, population under 7,000, is home to hundreds of Jews who survived the Inquisition by practicing secretly. These brave souls are the only “hidden Jews” (formerly known by the pejorative name, “Marranos,”) known to live in the Iberian Peninsula. Until 1990, they continued to protect their privacy and secret faith. Now, they openly proclaim their Jewishness, and have been received warmly by the Portuguese. (Spain, taking notice, is currently welcoming all hidden Jews of its past to return – and gain full citizenship!). The Jews of Belmonte can be found in carefully preserved stone houses, as we will see on a walking tour of the Jewish Quarter. Our tour includes a visit the Synagogue and the Museum of Portuguese Jewish History, located in a repurposed 18th century Catholic schoolhouse, including meeting with members of the community!Friday evening prepare for a magical Shabbat on-board docked PinhãoDay 5: Shabbat - PinhaoShabbat at leisure in Pinhão, including engaging lectures and afternoon village walking tourDay 6: Sunday - Regua & LamegoToday we explore the ancient town of Lamego. Since the 14th century the Jews from the important town of Lamego occupied the area between the Castle and the “Santa Maria de Almacave” church. In the next century, there were

already two Jewish quarters; the oldest was located next to the “Sun door” and the new one near the churchyard. In this quarter was located the synagogue in the old “Rua da Esnoga”. In 1436, the number of inhabitants in those two areas exceeded 400. Jews no longer inhabit this area but as we walk these ancient narrow city streets evidence of a Jewish past can be seen all around us. Day 7: Monday - PortoDiscover Porto; the name of a city and a fortified wine, one of the most famous in the world, aged at the wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, next to the Douro River. Its historical center has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and preserves many beautiful monuments. Once a major community of Jewish merchants thrived in this great city of the north. The city’s first Jewish area was along the Rua de Santa Ana. In 1386 King D. John I gave the community land near church of Nossa Senhora da Vitûria. The main synagogue stood on the Escadas da Vitûria; a place still locally called “Escadas da Esnoga.” A plaque marks the site. Nearby, there is an ancient Jewish cemetery at Passeio das Virtudes. Many Jewish merchants had their offices along the famed Porto riverfront in the Ribeira area along the Rua da Alfandega. Another Jewish community once flourished at the Rua Monte dos Jude’s, where in 1826 an important ancient Hebrew plaque was unearthed. Recently, the main synagogue for the Jewish quarter was discovered during renovation to an ancient building. Behind a false wall, workers stumbled on to an ark thought to be from the 15th century. This important discovery is being carefully preserved and researched to learn more about he once sizable Jewish population of Porto. We visit the largest synagogue on the Iberian Peninsula “Kandoorie Mekor Haim” founded by Captain Arthur Barros Bastos in 1938 including a meeting with members from the local Jewish community. Walk through the narrow streets and UNESCO center from the Sé Cathedral, where the first synagogue was built, to Montes dos Olivais where the Jewish Quarter was situated, witnessing the highlights of one of the world’s most romantic cities. Day 8 Tuesday: Porto - DepartDisembarkation and continue to Lisbon for post tour extension.

Post Tour LisbonHalfway between Porto and Lisbon we stop for a half-day tour of the famous town of Coimbra. This riverfront city in central Portugal and the country’s former capital, is home to a preserved medieval old town and the historic University of Coimbra (of which many Jews / crypto Jews studied and taught). Built on the grounds of a former palace, the university is famed for its baroque library, the Biblioteca Joanina, and its 18th-century bell tower. In the city’s old town lies the 12th-century Romanesque cathedral Sé Velha.Late afternoon arrival Lisbon, hotel check-in, dinner.Day 9: Wednesday - LisbonWe explore Europe’s second-oldest capital (after Athens), once home to the world’s greatest explorers like Vasco da Gama, Magellan and Prince Henry the Navigator, becoming the first true world city, the capital of an empire spreading over all continents, from South America (Brazil) to Asia (Macao, China; Goa, India). The former launch pad for many of the world’s greatest voyages is now where modern travelers come to discover. The stunning capital city of Portugal, and one of the most charismatic and vibrant cities in Western Europe, it is a city that effortlessly blends traditional heritage, with striking modernism and liberal thinking. As a holiday destination, Lisbon offers a rich and varied history, lively nightlife and is blessed with a glorious year-round climate.Walking through the quaint side streets of Lisbon our historians will unveil hidden elements in the architecture, explaining the influence of great Jewish sages like The Abravanel- a philosopher and statesman, and Abraham Zucato who altered the course of the Age of Discovery. The Jews of Portugal throughout history held social and political ranks with the favor of kings, and conciliatory relations between Muslims and Christians alike. However, these periods were equally marked by inquisitions, forced

baptisms and brutal massacres which have been overlooked in many historical references. On this post tour extension, you will discover the amazing story of the Crypto-Jews, (Cristão-Novos) a distinctive sub-group of Sephardim in Portugal who survived over 400 years of persecution in secret. Stand at the deportation point during WWII where thousands of Jewish refugees escaped Nazi persecution, among them famous names like Marc Chagall, Max Ernst and many others who contributed to the arts, sciences and politics of the world stage. Learn about Portugal’s own Oskar Schindler, a righteous gentile who is responsible for the single largest rescue mission of WWII, deifying state orders to save thousands feeling the horrors of the 3rd Reich. A highlight of the tour will be a visit to the Sinagoga Portuguesa Shaaré Tikvah and a meeting with the Jewish community of Lisbon.Day 10: Thursday - Depart

Jewish Heritage of the SouthJews in Mississippi? Can one realistically picture a Jewish man asking his brother, “Hey, Billy Bob, Y’all gonna pick up a box of matzah for the seder?” If you live in the south the following facts come as no surprise. For the rest of you, consider the fact that the second- and third-oldest existing synagogues in the United States are in Charleston, S.C., and Savannah, Ga., respectively. The first Jewish United States senator was Judah Benjamin from Louisiana. He later served as secretary of state in Jefferson Davis’ cabinet of the Confederate States of America from 1861 to 1865. Along the Mississippi River Valley, in towns and cities with names like Natchez, Vicksburg and Port Gibson, best known for Civil War battles and bluesmen, Jewish communities thrived in the second half of the 19th and early part of the 20th centuries. Never large in number, they made up for a lack of people power with a sense of community. Today there exists a Jewish cultural corridor along the Mississippi River, stretching from Memphis to New Orleans, linking aged Hebrew cemeteries, old synagogues, structures which once housed Jewish-owned department stores and other landmarks with a Jewish cultural connection in the land of grits and magnolia trees. Join Kosher River Cruises as we explore from the comforts of our luxury riverboat the wonders, history and Jewish heritage of the mighty Mississippi.
