Welcome

Welcome to our herd dispersal. It seems like only yes-

terday that we were grain farming and running a large

so we knew the type of cattle we wanted to raise - cows

with tidy udders that can wean big calves, maintain their

We started to dabble in the purebreds in the mid 80’s. We

bought cows at herd dispersals and consignment sales

across the country. We learned quickly that not just any

cow can raise a herd bull;; we bought some top end cows

and did some embryo transplanting using our commercial

herd as recips. When we bought Freightliner things started

to snowball. He made such a huge impact in our herd that

almost all the cattle in this dispersal go back to him. We

bought Ben and using our Freightliner daughters, we built

our red program. We raised Midnight out of the Double

Bar D Lass cow and he laid the foundation for our black

program. We started to sell off the commercial herd and

kept buying the best females that were available. The key

has always been purchasing the very best herd bulls that

being no object. They have taken this herd where they are

today, a set of cows that are capable of raising a 100% calf crop

for the bull pen and replacement heifer pen.

We haven’t done much showing over the years. We’ve always

let our bull pen be our show ring. That’s what we set out to do,

Sales Management CommentsHas anything this exciting happened to the Simmental breed in Manitoba since Bar 5 dispersed? Probably not. The interesting part of this is the fact

that the Kopp herd is still on an incline and isn’t being sold for any other reason than the land they operate on has been sold to an investment group.

The doors of opportunity have been opened wide to the Simmental industry. That is probably one of the biggest understatements I have ever made.

I think if any of you have ever read my past comments in Kopp sale catalogs or generally have heard our many complimentary words over the years,

you know of our opinion of the program. I have coined the phrase, and used it many of times, “They just have that ‘Kopp Look’”! This look being

and meaning: bigger topped and wider hipped than most, if not all others. It’s simply been bred into them via natural selection. It has always been

amazing to see how many “really good” bulls are made from this cowherd annually. And I think that is going to play well in favor to the buying public

simply because there will be many daughters sired by the high-powered Kopp bull battery, this being the ultimate way to tie into an un-traditional

version of a cow family designed from the paternal side.

Speaking of which, the great herdbull “investment” the Kopp’s have, will sell within this bred female dispersal. This roster could form a semen

catalog all on their own!

I could go on & on raving about the people, the cattle and the program, but I know we have done this for years already as complete sale managers

Homozygous Polled- Tradmark is a homozygous polled Icon son that has left a

lasting legacy in our herd. His consistency is unbelievable. I don’t know if we have

ever had to cull any of his calves. His sons grow into powerful herd bulls and his

daughters are broody, thick, beefy, and easy doing females, with nice tidy udders,

that are super productive, and raise thick, powerful, calves. Tradmark must have

bred almost 50 cows last spring in two cycles. He is still sound on his feet and

can still make a lasting impression on someone’s herd, or stand in stud where he

returns for the second cycle. He has been a really consistent herd bull in our herd

with next to no throw-a -ways. His sons are thick, structurally sound beef bulls with

heifer pen for two years and last year he graduated to the main herd. He breeds

a lot different than what he is himself. Best Western’s bull calves are dark red,

moderate, heavy muscled bulls that excel in the bull pen and are popular with

our customers. His heifers are moderate, broody females with lots of style, and

they are dropping beautiful, picture perfect udders. Best Western is a herd bull

bought from McMillen Ranching to use on our heifers. We lucked out big

time;; he turned out to be easy calving, and still throw calves that grow. He

has turned out to be really consistent, his sons excel in the bull pen and bring

top dollar, and his heifers are going to make beautiful, long, broody females

with lots of milk, big feet and picture perfect udders. We have a set of fall

bulls and heifers out of him that carry his stamp and are like peas in a pod.

His group of sons this year have the highest percentage of breeder quality

Homozygous Polled- Rival is a dark red Revolution son that created a lot of

excitement on the show road in the fall of 2011. He was Reserve Champion

Bull at Farm Fair International, and he was Junior Calf Champion at Agribition.

I saw him at Agribition and he was a very complete bull calf, He had a big hip,

big butt, was deep bodied, and structurally sound. We bought Rival out of

been a disappointment. His daughters are beautiful, big topped heifers. We

didn’t get many bull calves, but the ones we did get are a good consistent set

mass, muscle shape, and he is a Rival son that will create some excitement

at next spring’s bull sale. Rival’s mother is a dark red model female with a

beautiful udder. Rival is a herd bull with a bright future and his daughters will

be sought after, dark red, big volume females.

male. We bought him to use on our heifer pen and our high performance cows.

He has a moderate birth weight with big performance numbers. Red Enticer

was the lead off bull at the Skor Simmental sale for a whopping $42,000. He

is a meat machine with a big powerful hip, and large testicles. We didn’t need

is going to be a powerful, sound footed herd bull. He is a dark red bull out of

two black parents, so he will be a non-diluter and non-spotter. This is a young

herd bull that is ready to go to work and leave a big impact in someone’s herd.

Ben left us with some incredible females in his years of service, but the ultimate female is our “donor”

herd, the most notable being 107U, the beautiful Wheatland daughter, that is now deceased. She has

herd bulls working for Dequier Farms of Haywood, MB, the “Boy Wonder” Crosby who made his mark

in the industry and still walks our pastures, Crosby’s full brother, lot 21 for $6,500 in our 8th annual sale

went to Rod Savage of Elm Creek, MB, and Bonchuk Farms of Solgsgirth, MB bought lot 12 for $15,000

in our 8th annual sale, and the Walker son Skor Simmentals of Sedgewick, AB. bought for $22,000, lot 40

in our 9th annual sale, and this year she has a big, powerful, Walker son at side, and 13 embryo calves

Wallbanger, a drink that doesn’t adequately express the breeding potential of this herd bull, so we

named him Moonshine (homebrew) the stuff that will take your breath away, make you take a step back

Booster is a powerful beef machine. He is a dark red, goggle eyed, deep bodied, full

bull sale where he was the high selling bull of the day for $25,000. That was no accident

We bought Radison to use on our fullblood heifers and our high performance fullblood

cows. When I saw a picture of Radison in the Bull Spectrum catalog, I phoned Craig Mill

and asked him if Radison was as good as his picture. Craig’s comment was “he’s pretty

shape, large testicles, gentle disposition, darker than cherry red, black hooves, and pigment

red, goggle eyed beauty, with a nice tidy udder. Sounds too good to be true? Well we

bought him for $26,000 and when he got to our place, we weren’t disappointed. He was a

real complete herd bull, and to top it off he was a smart and potent breeder. Radison is a herd bull that has all the attributes to make a huge impact on the fullblood sector of the Simmental Industry.
