INTRODUCTION

A Cold Chain is a temperature controlled supply chain. An unbroken cold chain is an un interrupted series of storage and distribution activities which maintain a given temperature range. It is used to help extend and ensure the shelf life of products such as pharmaceutical drugs, perishables, food, photographic films chemicals and etc.

Current & Future Trends for Pharmaceutical Logistics in cold chain industry

• Globally the cold chain market is estimated to be valued at USD 167.24 Billion in 2015, and is projected to reach USD 234.49 Billion by 2020. It is projected to grow at a CAGR of 7.0-10.0% from 2015 to 2020.

• The cold chain market is segmented on the basis of type into refrigerated storage and refrigerated transport. The refrigerated transport market is further sub-segmented by technology into air blown evaporators and eutectic devices.

• On the basis of application, it is segmented into frozen fruits & vegetables, frozen bakery & confectionery, frozen dairy & frozen desserts, frozen meat, fish & seafood, pharmaceuticals and others.

• It is also segmented on basis of temperature type - chilled and frozen & further on the basis of regions

into North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Rest of the World (RoW).

Current & Future Trends for Pharmaceutical Logistics in cold chain industry

• The cold chain industry in India is nearly Rs 120 to 150 Billion (Approx. $2 Billion) & is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of ~15-17% over the next three to five years led by growth in the organised retail segment, pharmaceutical industry and maturation of Indian food processing industry.

• With less than 10% of perishable produces utilising the temperature controlled facility, India falls under the category of low cold chain adaptation countries, thereby providing tremendous scope for growth in the segment.

• In terms of volume, the cold chain industry in India estimated at around 30 million tonnes (MT) of warehousing capacity and nearly 12000-15000 reefer vehicles on road. With a mere 7% of the organised segment in cold chain warehousing and ~15% in temperature controlled transportation, the growth in the segment is well supported by overall market growth of 15% and 20% in temperature controlled services.

• In India, the cold chain warehousing capacity is mostly dominated by potato storage (which forms nearly 75% of the capacity) and the remaining 25% is distributed among dairy products, fruits & vegetables, marine foods & pharmaceuticals. Also, nearly 40% of the cold storage capacity is in Uttar Pradesh followed by 19% in West Bengal. This skewed distribution of warehousing provides scope for players in other parts of the country significantly.

• The growing need of the pharmaceutical industry, due to regulatory pressures is also seeing a lot of demand being generated in this segment recently & is expected to grow at an accelerated pace in the next 2-3 years.

Current & Future Trends for Pharmaceutical Logistics in cold chain industry

• The global pharma industry today is roughly $1.1 trillion, & between 2014 – 2020, is projected to rise by 41% to 60% as per estimates made by reliable sources.

• Within that, products that require refrigerated storage & transport are worth around $260 billion, & will rise 65% between 2014 - 2020, while non-refrigerated products by 34%.

• The drivers, of course, are the continuing transition to biologically based products in new product introductions; additional drivers are the tightening requirements for life sciences shipments, combined

with the growing internationalization of pharmaceutical trade.

Current & Future Trends for Pharmaceutical Logistics in cold chain industry

• Pharmaceutical Cold Chain Logistics is estimated to be a $12.6 Billion Business Globally

• Around 63% of this is spent of transportation while the rest on specialized packing & monitoring devices

• Pharmaceutical Commerce's annual Cold Chain Sourcebook projects 52% growth between 2014 & 2020 in this space

• Between 2014 to 2020 the ratio of Cold Chain to Ambient Logistics will change from 15% to 18% of the total Pharmaceutical Logistics space, which means that the demand for Cold Chain Logistics will grow faster than Ambient Logistics by as much as 20%

FACTORS TO BE ACCOUNTED FOR FUTURE GROWTH

• Stronger influence of regulations globally, while at the same time pharmaceutical companies continue to outsource non-core activities, both of which will have a dramatic impact in the next five years.

• Higher dependence on Passive Cooling, augmenting the need for better Active cooling infrastructure

• Need to scale up infrastructure, both in Reefer Vehicles as well as Storages

• Need to have stringent Quality standards & use of the best in class protocols, for Mapping, Validation & Calibration processes, which are Globally acceptable

• Need to understand and adopt Good Storage Practices ass per Pharma Industry benchmarks

• Need to identify & adopt best in class technology available globally & to identify & plug leakages in the entire process of storage & movement of the goods from manufacturing to end user

• Fragmentation in developing countries like India, creating the need for bigger, organized players

25% of vaccines go waste due to lack of cold chain

TNN | Jul 1, 2016, 05.17AM IST NEW DELHI: At least 25 per cent of the vaccines go waste even before reaching the doctors and patients while many lose their efficacy by the time they are administered due to lack of quality supply chain and logistics management system. This is posing a major challenge for the government as well as public health agencies working to expand the immunisation coverage, mainly in the hinterland where supply chain logistics and infrastructure are in poor shape. Most vaccines are heat sensitive & remain potent between 2 degree & 8 degree Celsius. Thus maintaining a cold chain becomes critical to their efficacy.

26% of food produced in India goes waste due to lack of cold chain & logistics infrastructure

India, the world’s largest producer of milk and the second-largest producer of fruits and vegetables, is also one of the biggest food wasters in the world – wasting INR 440 billion worth of fruits, vegetables and grains every year. The challenge of feeding India’s billion plus people is not really about agriculture and food production but getting the food to the people. The biggest contributors to waste are the lack of refrigerated transport and adequate high quality cold storage facilities for both food manufacturers and food sellers (retailers). What India lacks, and needs, is a well-developed, world-class cold chain infrastructure.

FACTORS TO BE ACCOUNTED FOR FUTURE GROWTH – INDIA SPECIFIC

• Logistics in India is still highly fragmented. Cold Chain Logistics in India is highly underdeveloped and

more expensive compared to developed nations. Logistics costs account for around 6-10% of average retail prices in India as against the global average of 4-5%

• There is also a lack of awareness on the benefits/need of use of controlled storage & movement of goods, especially considering the varying climate conditions across the geography.

• The current pharmaceutical supply chain scenario in India is extremely complex. One of the main reasons for this complex supply chain environment is the presence of more than 55,000 retail pharmacies which are spread across India. In India, large number of medicines and other such facilities are required to be transported to the distant areas through poorly connected routes. Due to the poor transport facilities in India the cost of drugs is much higher than the USA or Europe. About 1/3rd of the revenues generated by the drugs companies have been spent on the transportation only.

• Sustained pressure/ intervention from Global agencies such as USFDA, UN, WHO pushing for tighter regulatory, besides guidelines being issued by the Indian regulators such as Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) has been effective in improving the overall understanding & infrastructure being used by Pharma companies in India.

• This has created a surge in demand for Cold Chain Logistics in India by this sector, leading to the creation of Pharma focussed Logistics companies such as Kool-ex.

• There is a great need for segment focussed Logistics companies to support this growing demand
