Oppgave / Oppgve 5 Membranseparasjon gasser (30%)
gasser holdes tilbake i gasstrmmen.
For enkelhets skyld, betrakter vi gassblandingene som kun bestende av to komponenter;
dette er illustrert i parentes under. Prosessbetingelsene er gitt i hvert enkelt tilfelle.
1. CO2 fra forbrenningsgass (5 mol% CO2 i blanding med 95 mol% N2)Fdetrykk: 4 bar, permeattrykk: 0,1 bar, massestrm: 50 kg/s
2. CO2 for oppgradering av biogass (40 mol% CO2 i blanding med 60 mol% CH4)Fdetrykk: 7bar, permeattrykk: 1 bar, volumstrm: 75 m3(STP)/time
PCO2 = 6.10-7 m3(STP).m/m2.bar.h
PN2 = 3.10-9 m3(STP).m/m2.bar.h
PCH4 = 1,2.10-8 m3(STP).m/m2.bar.h

-vtkuletemperatur, trrkuletemperatur
-adiabatisk metningstemperatur-prosentvis fuktighet, prosentvis relativ fuktighet

English version
Problem 1: Single-stage flash (20%)
(a) The relative volatility between components 1-2 is defined as = (y1/x1) / (y2/x2).
(a1) Use the data below to find for propane-butane (use = 6 if you cannot find it).(a2) Derive the relationship between y1 and x1 (mole fractions light component) for a
binary mixture with constant relative volatility.
(b) Plot the xy-diagram and sketch the Txy-diagram for the system propane-butane at 1 atm.
(c) Flash. The following two streams are mixed
Stream Fa: 80 mol/s. Saturated vapour at 1 atm. 50% propane. 50% n-butane
Stream Fb: 70 mol/s. Saturated liquid at 1 atm. 50% propane. 50% n-butane
The mixed stream is separated in an adiabatic flash unit operating at 1 atm into a liquid
product L and vapour product V (in equilibrium). Find the amount and compositions of the
streams L and V.
Assume constant relative volatility . Energy balance: Assume constant molar flows.
(d) Rank the temperatures of the streams Fa, Fb, L and V (justify your answer).
Vapor-liquid equilibrium data:
Boiling point (1 atm) Vapor pressure at 240K
Propane (1) 231.14K 1109 mmHg
Butane (2) 272.98K 180.6 mmHg
Problem 2: Distillation (10%)
Consider the separation of a liquid feed with two components (50% A and 50%B) with a
relative volatility of 6 into a distillate and bottoms product. What is the minimum number of
distillation stages required to get products with 0.1% A (bottoms) and 1% B (top). What
would you recommend as the actual number of stages (approximately)?

(a) Define all the variables, including giving their units. Make a flowsheet with the variables.
(b) What is this formula used for and what assumptions are required? How can it be solved?
(c) What is NA in terms of the variables in the formula? What is HTU, NTU, HOG and NOG?
Problem 4. Control (10%)
Make a flowsheet of continuous distillation column. The heat input (boilup V) is set at its
maximum (to maximize separation). Suggest a feedback control structure (involving twoLCs, one PC and one TC). The feed stream to the column is given (disturbance).

Problem 5. Membrane separation Gases (30%)
An alternative environmentally friendly way of removing CO2 from gas streams is under
development this method is using tailormade membranes where CO2 is permeating very fast
through the material and other gases are being retained on the feed side. The challenges aredifferent depending on type of gas mixture. In order to illustrate this, three different gas
streams containing CO2 are given below. For sake of simplicity, only two components are
considered. Process conditions are given for each case.
1) CO2 from flue gas (5 mole% CO2 in mixture with 95 mole% N2)Feed pressure: 4 bar, permeate pressure 0,1 bar. Mass flow 50 kg/s
2) CO2 from biogas (40 mole% CO2 in mixture with 60 mole% CH4)Feed pressure: 7 bar, permeate pressure: 1 bar. Volume stream: 75 m3(STP)/hour
3) CO2 from natural gas (10 mole% CO2 in mixture with 90 mole% CH4)Feed pressure: 70 bar, permeate pressure: 1 bar. Volume stream: 104 m3(STP)/hour
membrane with high permeation for CO2 is chosen for all three cases. The membrane
is 2 m thick, and has the following permeabilities, P:
PCO2 = 6.10-7 m3(STP).m/m2.bar.h
PN2 = 3.10-9 m3(STP).m/m2.bar.h
PCH4 = 1,2.10-8 m3(STP).m/m2.bar.h
a. Calculate the minimum concentration of CO2 which can be obtained in the retentatestream for all three cases
b. Calculate the necessarry membrane area for case 3) by using the given equations andthe following information: The fraction of CO2 in the purified natural gas must be no
higher than 2,5 vol% when it is sold to Europe. In order to minimize the loss of CH4in the permeate stream, the permeate cut () is set to 0,1.
c. Explain which kind of configuration you will choose for the membrane module andwhy (flat sheets, spiral-wound, hollow fibres), and whether it should be cocurrent,
counter current or cross flow.
Given: Equations and information in Attahcment 1

Problem 6. Drying (20%)
a. When a material is being dried, we need to know the temperature of the air used fordrying and the humidity content. Define the following parameters which are very
important in this context:
-wet bulb temperature, dry bulb temperature-adiabatic saturation temperature
-percentage humidity, percentage relative humidity
b. Use the attached diagram and table (Attachment 2) to find vapour pressure, humiditycontent (absolute and percentage) and adiabatic saturation temperature for an air
stream of temperature 750C, dew point temperature of 300C and 10% relative
humidity. The pressure of the air is 1 bar.
Given: Humidity chart and table in Attachment 2. Plot how you find your answer in thediagram and turn it in with the other exam papers.
