Death of AndropovDeath of AndropovAndropov was too ill to

attend Red Square celebrations in 983. What was describes as a cold was actually a serious heart and kidney condition.

From his hospital bed, he continued to make administrative changes and call for reform.

However, he fell into a coma and died after less than 15 months in office.

Chernenko’s leadershipChernenko’s leadership The claim that Andropov

named Gorbachev as his successor is probably untrue.

However, Chernenko’s appointment to general secretary was contested by Gorbachev, who had formed a temporary alliance with Romanov, who was also one of the new breed in the Communist Party.

Ultimately, Gorbachev was probably willing to allow Chernenko’s appointment in the knowledge that he would eventually succeed the 72 year old man, the oldest person ever to become Soviet leader.
