This term has seen everything from drought to deluge and our sportsmen and women have struggled with fixtures cancelled, postponed or drowned! That said, we have kept the Olympic flame burning with a range of events linked to the forthcoming games including a very popular mini-Olympics for local primary schools. As I write our students are all absorbed in examinations and the School is abnormally quiet. This will quickly change as we prepare for sports day, activities day and the swimming gala to give the term a resounding finish as the

summer holidays approach.

The major news that we announced just before half term was the acquisition of Stroud Preparatory School which will now be known as Stroud – the King Edward VI Preparatory School. The intention is to combine the best features of King Edward’s and Stroud by sharing, where appropriate and feasible, the facilities, staff and resources to give each pupil the best education we can from the early years until university entry, while preserving

the particular identities of the two schools so that each retains its distinctive character and style. The leadership team at Stroud will continue to provide the best possible impartial advice about which secondary school is appropriate for each child’s future, considering the wishes of parents and looking at a range of options. Entry procedures to King Edward’s will remain unchanged.

We are preparing for some important improvements to the School site over July and August with the refurbishment of the remaining language and classics classrooms and the creation of an expanded music recital room. Plans are also being prepared for a new art department and theatre.

The number of trips we organise continues to provide an enormous variety of opportunities for our students with recent visits to Spain, Germany, different parts of France as well as across the UK. The summer will be busy too with significant numbers involved in charity work with our projects in South Africa and Swanage as well as field work in Mexico, water sports in France and our primary school project at Lovaton on Dartmoor.

The summer term is always marked by some sadness as we say farewell to another generation of KES students and some long serving staff. Particular thanks are owed to Dr Hoskins, Mr Kelly, Mrs Lovegrove, Mrs Mayes and Mr Price after their many years of teaching at King Edward’s. We thank them and the other staff who are retiring or moving to other posts and wish them all well.

Learning German has the X factorOn 29th March the Onatti Theatre Company visited King Edward’s to perform a play ”Alles wird anders” to the Third, Fourth and Fifth Year Germanists. The imaginative script was acted in a lively manner by the two actors who raised many a laugh amongst the audience. Three KES students gamely participated as an X Factor style jury, giving very positive verdicts on the singing of the aspiring musical theatre candidate, Mark.

Home and Away!On 23rd March, 20 students from the Collège les Ormeaux arrived in Southampton for the home leg of the Le Havre exchange. The students spent the weekend with their Third Year exchange partners before coming into school on the Monday. Three weeks later 20 KES students and 2 staff embarked on the away leg. Despite torrential rain, our students ran alongside their French counterparts in their Sports Day on the Saturday, before spending the rest of the weekend with their French families. On Monday the group went into school where they watched theatrical performance of extracts from some of Molière’s famous comedies.

Kangaroo CompetitionSome of the most able KES mathematicians were recently invited to take part in the European Kangaroo competition (an exam taken by students in over 40 countries in Europe and beyond). Following the competition, Cameron Brown, Alice James, Tabitha Sparks and Andrew Wu received Merit certificates. Cameron Brown’s excellent score of 117 was only bettered by one other competitor in the UK.

Co-CurricularKES awarded Eco-Schools Green Flag

King Edward’s is delighted to announce that it has been awarded the Eco-Schools Green Flag following its official assessment in May. This is a prestigious international award demonstrating that the School has taken significant steps to being a sustainable institution. Well done to everyone for the part they have played in ensuring that KES has achieved this status.“Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life.”

Andalucia TripThe beginning of the Easter holidays saw 23 Third and Fourth year Hispanists travel to Córdoba in Andalucía. Although the weather was a bit unseasonal, the group really enjoyed themselves. The mornings were spent in a specialist language school and the afternoons visiting the many historical sites Córdoba has to offer, as well as sampling some traditional tapas and “chocolate con churros”. Easter in Spain is a big religious affair and the group was lucky enough to witness some of the very impressive processions that were taking place all over Córdoba that week.

CataloniaForty eight members of the First and Second Years and 5 members of staff spent five days during half term in the Catalonia region of Northern Spain. During their stay they visited the town of Figueres for some shopping and to explore the fascinating works of Salvador Dalí in his Theatre Museum, enjoyed a whistle-stop tour of Barcelona’s best sites and toured the town of Girona with its medieval cobbled streets, Arab baths and Jewish quarter. The lovely weather allowed an opportunity to swim in the hotel pool each day and the group returned to KES on a rainy Jubilee day, having had a fun, as well as culturally educational, experience.

A Tree Fit For A Queen!

At lunchtime on Friday 1st June a tree was planted at the very edge of the School Field to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The ceremony was conducted by the School’s chaplain Revd. Poppleton.

KES is a hive of activity!

KES has installed its own honey bee hive and colony on the roof of the School. At the beginning of May, the apiarist delivered the swarm of some 10,000 bees and settled them in to their new home. Mr Robinson and Dr Gamblin, along with some keen students, will be looking after the bees over the forthcoming months and hopefully collecting the honey they produce.

Paris in the SpringThere is no doubt that Paris is a wonderful city to explore even when the weather is not particularly spring-like! The group of 36 Fourth and Fifth Years made the most of every opportunity during the three day visit to Paris. They enjoyed singing ‘Aux Champs-Elysées’ on the boat and at the restaurant ‘Chez la mère Catherine’ to the delight of the pianist and waiters! The Eiffel Tower proved not too high for some and the Musée d’Orsay was quite inspirational for others. KES students were a pleasure to take to Paris and this was certainly a fantastic way to finish the Easter holidays.

Cacti at KewOn 28th April members of the Cactus Club followed the Monet Trail around the 300 acre botanical gardens at Kew. Despite the rain, the day provided much laughter. This year’s expedition prize winners were James Allen, James Mitchell and Ben Wall (the current Cactus Club champion).

Beam HouseThe Third Year trip to Beam House Activities Centre took place over the Easter break. For five days a group of 20 students enjoyed the chance to try their hands at activities such as climbing, abseiling, archery, rifle shooting and even surfing in the cold Bristol Channel. New this year was blokarting, where one sits in a little canvas buggy powered by a windsurf-type sail. Over the course of the week everyone rose to the challenge of something new and a great time was had by all.

Mini OlympicsOn 24th May, in order to celebrate the 2012 Olympic Games and to promote team spirit and sporting talent, 120 Year 5 and 6 pupils from 6 partnership primary schools were invited to take part in a special Mini-Olympics. The event took place at Wellington Sports Ground where the pupils had plenty of space to get involved in relay races and Tug of War competitions. The afternoon was a real success, and it further strengthened our already strong community links.

Truly Tenacious! In the national Student Investor Final held in London on April 25th, the KES ‘Tenacity’ team of Rikhil Ohri, Nikhil Ohri, Andy Pennycuick and Nick Brown came agonisingly close to being crowned national champions. The team came 2nd of the 8 teams on the day, having fought their way to the Final against a total of over 10,000 teams. Their presentation on ‘Implementing responsible capitalism’ came in for special praise from the judges, delivered as it was with great panache, professional slides and completely without notes. Guests on the day included Faisal Islam, the Economics correspondent for Channel 4 news, and Paul Fisher from the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee. The team’s 2nd place earned them silver medals, a prize of £150 each, and £1,500 for the School. This is a truly remarkable achievement. Well done boys!

KESnetic Wins Best Newcomer!A wet Goodwood race circuit played host to the regional heats of the Greenpower Challenge on the 10th June 2012. With the KESnetic team very much in its infancy, a good result would have been to simply finish the 4 hour endurance race with the car intact and to learn some important lessons for future development. The team of young engineers worked incredibly hard, both leading up to the event and during race day, to manufacture and maintain a reliable car that completed the distance with an average speed of over 20mph. Their consistency, race strategy and slick pit stops earned the team top spot of the Greenpower newcomers in 2012 and started the team’s trophy collection. Work can now begin on making the car lighter and more efficient for the next race. Well done to all students who have been involved in the manufacture, development, marketing and media that resulted in the team’s success.

Check Mate! The school phase of the Delauncey UK Chess Challenge took place this term. Sixteen KES players qualified for the Hampshire megafinal in May and the award for the new school champion went to Tom Weir.

ThanksgivingOn 21st March, the whole School gathered for the annual Thanksgiving Service. Thanksgiving provides the school community with an opportunity to express its gratitude and give thanks to the School’s founder William Capon. This year’s guest speaker was from the Trussell Trust, a charitable organisation that works to empower local communities to combat poverty and exclusion in the UK and Bulgaria.

La Plagne 2012During the first week of the Easter holiday 52 students and 7 staff enjoyed a week skiing in La Plagne, France. Good levels of snow allowed the group to enjoy the excellent conditions and ski a variety of pistes. Those students who had not skied on snow before received excellent tuition from the ESF instructors and made very good progress.

Ready Steady Cook! This year’s House Ready Steady Cook competition took place in May. Mrs Kennard and Miss Smith judged the competition which produced some very high quality dishes. The winning place went to Watts with their burger served with a chocolate chilli sauce.

KESSOC Annual LectureOn 11th May, the School was delighted to welcome Geoff Holt MBE to deliver the annual KESSOC lecture. Geoff is an inspirational yachtsman who was paralysed from the neck down in an accident aged just 18. Since his accident Geoff has gone on to conquer the world of yachting culminating in 2010 with the awarding of an MBE for ‘services to disabled sailing’ and in 2011 he was crowned ‘Yachtsman of the Year’ by the Yachting Journalists’ Association. Geoff’s talk was captivating and enjoyed by all those who attended.

Third Year Recital EveningOn 29th May several advanced musicians from the Third Year performed solos to parents and friends. The high standard of the performances took many members of the audience by surprise as they listened to a range of Grade VIII pieces and the first movement of the Elgar cello concerto. The evening marked the first in a series of recital evenings for particular year groups which will continue next year, and which will provide a platform for many of our talented musicians.

Charities, charities, charities

During the second half of the spring term KES hosted the Click Choice Glamour Fashion Show – a Green Team and Charity Commission collaboration. The event showcased a range of fashion, all in aid of two charities ‘Well boring’ and ‘Environmental Justice’. From high street favourites and ethically produced couture to a selection of designer pieces, there was something for everyone! The event also celebrated work created by KES students themselves. In total 200 parents, students and staff were involved in an extremely enjoyable and thought-provoking evening raising £1,246.21.In March, Sports Relief day and Green non-uniform day took place. Organised by the Green Team, who encouraged students to recycle any used printer cartridges in place of a donation, the day was themed with “wear something green”. A variety of other activities

in aid of Sport Relief took place at lunchtime including Lower School dodge ball and Upper School football resulting in a very pleasing £1,140.09. The 24 hour Rowathon, organised by the Summer Camp team, achieved an outstanding £1,819.96 and all donations will go to help the Southampton Young Carers Charity. Mr Smart and the English Department set up and encouraged all of the Lower School to take part in the National Readathon raising £170 for the charity Readwell and the end of term saw the Lower School

Easter egg hunt competition organised by Beth Ashfield. By the end of the term we had raised a total of £6000. There was enough to send a significant donation to Fairbridge Solent, a local charity who we have promised to support annually and we have also contributed funds to the Trussell Trust and Christian Aid. The summer term started with a successful “From Stage & Screen”

charity music concert led by Charlie Baker and raised a very pleasing £430. The team were then busy planning events for the Cancer Research “Race for Life” that took place on 8th July on Southampton Common. In June, a Fun Olympics event was organised by the Lower School Charities team just before our Pink Friday non-uniform day on June 22nd whilst the same day the Summer Camp team organised the annual First and Second Year Summer Camp barbecue and disco. So far this term donations have been allocated to Adrian Reynolds (former pupil) for running the London Marathon 2012 in aid of Mind, Kayleigh Meager who completed Swimathon 2012 for Marie Curie and Phil Mitchell (former pupil) for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of the Goedgedacht Project in South Africa. The Charities Commission also donated money to Mr Blow and his team who raised £3,000 for Macmillan Cancer charity cycling 1100 kilometres in 11 days across Spain at the start of the Easter holidays. As the 2011/2012 academic year draws to a close, I would like to express a very sincere and special thank you to Lotti Williams and Jake Davies who have both proved to be outstanding in their commitment as Charity Commission Presidents this year. They have been true role models for the whole School to follow. I would also like to thank all of the KES community and staff who have given up their time to be involved with the variety of charitable activities that have taken place this year. We wish the South Africa team all the very best for their summer trip in August where £10,000 has been committed for funding a youth worker for the year, working in the new Pathway out of Poverty centre in Riebeek, and to the Summer Camp team who will contribute £4,500 to running the camp on behalf of the young carers.
