Dear Customers

A few months ago RADWAG celebrated its 25th anniversary of company presence on the market.

The history of dynamic company development begun in 1984 with manufacturing simple spring based

kitchen scales. Today RADWAG offers a wide range of professional laboratory balances and industrial

measuring systems. The beginnings of company’s development were limited by political system,

followed by lack of funds, non-qualified personnel and finally low rank of Polish brand in the world. As

Poland managed to gain its recognition among international market, it was struck by global crisis. The

weighing industry was strongly affected by the crisis. Today the company records high increase in sales

volumes, and I am confident to claim that the crisis has reinforced our position in the weighing market.

The grounding of RADWAG’s success is definitely offering high quality and fully professional

approach. Today the development of RADWAG is systematic improvement of quality and fewer brand

new products, but those introduced on the market are much better tested and have less errors when

entering the sales.

The first RADWAG electronic laboratory balance was designed in 1992. Within almost 20 years a

lot has changed in RADWAG structures and in technological advancement of the products. In 2010

RADWAG designed and introduced to market a new series of mass comparators, named “Y series”.

Application of the broad experience and technologically advanced electronic and IT components,

together with new mechanical solutions in the products, enables RADWAG to offer instruments with

improved functionality, ergonomics, accuracy and speed of weighing. These are the features of the

most modern solutions available in the world.

Implementation of such an innovative solution in less than a year was a great challenge to

RADWAG team, but the effects exhibit our potential and development possibilities in the future.

Mass comparators series Y are dedicated to those users who apart from mass measurement

require analysis and documentation from applied procedures.

I hope that the offered products meet your expectations. Please also return with any comments

and suggestions for extending our offer.

Mass comparators

Mass comparators are devices designed for determination of the difference between mass of a

tested mass standard (B) and known mass of a mass standard (A). Mass comparators are most

commonly used in measuring laboratories for calibration of mass standards and weights.

The accuracy of mass comparator is strongly influenced by ambient conditions (temperature, air

breeze, vibrations). Thus, in order to provide proper measurement conditions, a mass comparator has

to be operated in a weighing room with very precise control of temperature, and the workbench of the

mass comparator should be stable and free from any vibrations. Mass comparators are not supervised

by legal metrological control. The main assessment criterion for a mass comparator is its repeatability.

Basic metrological features of a mass comparator are:

• reading unit d,

• maximal capacity Max – maximal calibrated mass on a device

• compensation range

• standard deviation – parameter s which characterizes the dispersion of results from a series of n

measurements of the same measurand:

where - xi - i-result of a measurement

x - arithmetic mean from n results

Standard deviation – it is the basic parameter determining metrological characteristic of a mass

comparator.

It is related to the dispersion of measurement result of the same mass in equal conditions,

comprising:

- the same measurement procedure and the same operator,

- the same reference mass standard,

- short period of time.

Standard deviation for a series ABBA or ABA – standard deviation determined for the results

determined by differences in weighing cycles ABBA or ABA for determined quantity of series.

It is one of the accessible parameters which define acceptance criteria of a mass comparator

during calibration and/or checking procedure. Standard deviation is also specified by manufacturers of

mass comparators in product folders.

Ambient conditions

Ambient conditions, i.e. temperature and relative humidity in a laboratory are very important

factors influencing calibration of mass standards and weights. International recommendations

specified in document OIML 111 determine maximal permissible values of temperature and humidity

for each class of calibrated mass standards and / or weights.

Methods for calibration of mass standards and weights

Mass standards and weights are calibrated by determining a difference between a reference mass

with determined mass and tested mass standard with application of a mass comparator with

corresponding metrological characteristics. Determination of mass standards and weights B is carried

out with application of substitution method and comparison of their mass with mass of

reference standards A, which should be at least one class more accurate in test cycle ABBA, ABA or

AB1 .... BnA. Minimal quantity of cycles for each class is determined in Document R111 OIML:

Kind and quantity of cycles, mass comparators and weighing instruments accuracy that are used

for calibration of mass standards and reference standards accuracy should be adjusted in such a way

that complex extended uncertainty U with coverage factor k=2 during calibration process does not

exceed 1/3 of MPE as determined in Document R111.

Measuring retraceability.

Maintenance of measuring retraceability is a warranty of unequivocal measuring process, allowing for

its comparison to reference unit.

Fig. 1 Schema of measuring retraceability of mass unit In case of users of measuring instruments and reference weights, the best option for maintenance of

measuring retraceability is to calibrate them in accredited calibration laboratories and check their

indications according to internal inspection schedule for calibration and checking of measuring

equipment. The procedures should be carried out with application of adequate measuring instruments

and mass standards which enable maintaining measuring retraceability.

Uncertainty of measurement in calibration of mass standards

All kinds of measurements are subject to uncertainty of their results. When stating results of

measurements of physical values, one should also state data on accuracy of these measurements.

Assessment of measurement reliability is necessary for anyone who utilizes measurements results in

their work. Lack of such information does not allow measuring results to be compared to each other

and to reference values stated as in norms and specifications. Thus, the continuous necessity to

calculate, assess, and express measuring uncertainty.

Measurement uncertainty combines a set of components which can be grouped into two

categories, according to means of calculating their numeric value:

- Uncertainty type A – it is calculated with use of statistical methods and it is based on a series of

individual observations (measurements),

- Uncertainty type B – it is calculated by means of other methods.

International mass standard, e.g.1 kg (Sevres – France)

National mass standard, (e.g. 1 kg Central Office of Measures - Poland)

Reference mass standards (Calibration laboratories, e.g. RADWAG laboratory)

Measuring instruments, and reference mass standards

Page 6: Komparatory masy MEGA FINALNA - Tlumaczenie · Mass comparators are devices designed for determination of the difference between mass of a tested mass standard (B) and known mass

The total budget of uncertainty of mass standards and weights calibration is strongly influenced by

uncertainty of reference mass standard. Thus, bearing in mind anticipated measuring uncertainty, it is

very important to use adequate reference mass standards for calibration process. Another important

factor relates to applied mass comparators and factors which influence the numerical value of

measuring uncertainty. Mass comparator uncertainty depends on its readability, i.e. reading unit d and

repeatability, which is expressed by standard deviation.

RADWAG Wagi Elektroniczne (Balances and Scales), as one of a few manufacturers in the world has

been offering mass comparators since 2006. The offered solutions are fully professional and simple in

operation. RADWAG mass comparators provide calibration of mass standards, weights and all kinds

of technological weights.

RADWAG mass comparators have gained international recognition among calibration laboratories.

Comparator is also equipped with triangular platform with bevelled corners.

Mass comparators series WPY/KO comprise two elements, where the electronic module is separated from the precise mechanical measuring system. Detachable indicator enables significant reduction of vibrations transferred onto the measuring system, and additionally improves ergonomics of operation.

The comparators are used both for ensuring retraceability of mass measurements, and verification of weights in accordance with legal metrology. RADWAG Mass Comparators have gained international recognition among Accredited Calibration Laboratories, in many countries.

The Rad-Cal computer software is to manage the operation of a laboratory which calibrates mass standards and weights. The software is designed to carry out calibration procedures in a laboratory from the moment of order acceptance till issue of a calibration certificate. The Rad-Cal also records data on ambient conditions in a laboratory and can lock instrument’s operation on detecting exceeding of maximal permissiblevalues of ambient conditions parameters. The software runs metrological supervision over all reference mass standards and mass comparators of a laboratory. It carries out calibration process by standards substitution procedure ABBA or ABA in cycles determined by anoperator. Software functions: • Operation of RADWAG mass comparators • Extended data bases: reference mass standards, mass comparators, contractors, operators, tasks; • management of pending tasks • Reporting of calibration process • Data synchronization with mass comparators • Export of report results (PDF, MS Word, Excel) • Records from activities and certificates

Mass metrology usually applies mass standards compatible with OIML recommendations and accuracy classes E1, E2, F1, F2, M1, M2 and M3 or ASTM classified in groups 1 to 7 respectively. Determination of mass of the standards generally assumed, that the total uncertainty of the process can not exceed 1/3 of Maximal Permissible Error of the mass standards or weights with thrust level approximately 95 % and coverage factor k = 2 or 95 %.

RADWAG offer covers mass standard and weights in classes from E1 to M1. Mass standards in class E2 up to 200 kg, class F1 up to 10 kg and F2, M1 and M2 up to 20 kg are calibrated in RADWAG Measuring Laboratory accredited by Polish Centre for Accreditation which is a signatory of EA MLA. Therefore, in the respect of accreditation, the calibration certificates issued by RADWAG Measuring Laboratory are recognized in most countries of the world (who are signatories of EA MLA agreement). Mass standards and weights in other classes are accredited in external accredited laboratories.

RADWAG offer covers mass standards as single weights and in sets:
