Das Alphabet: besondere Buchstabenspecial letters that don’t exist in English

ä – Käse pronouced as „ay“ (long) or „eh“ (short)

ö – Österreich pronounce „ay“ with lip-rounding

ü – grün pronounce „ee“ with lip-rounding

ß = ss but not always! Pay attention to which words are

spelled with this special letter e

Note that this vowel is pronounced as a schwa at the ends of words, in contrast to the so-called “silent e” in English.

eu & äu – heute, Bäuche pronounced as „oy“ as in „boy“
