he new head of Northwest Health Systems comes with plenty of experience and an

upbeat perspective on the future of healthcare in Northwest Arkansas.

Offering a handshake and a welcoming smile, Denten Park’s genuine friendliness and open demeanor make an immediate impression. Park officially took on the mantle of market chief executive officer for Northwest Health in June and is putting his congenial personality to the task of building relationships with physician partners, hospital administration and staff within the five-hospital system.

While Park believes Northwest Health has grown effectively to serve the community, he says he wants to continue to expand the system’s footprint by growing its services and becoming more readily available for patients. “This is a calling, not a job,” Park says. “Because we are called to this, we want to take care of as many people as we can.”

Park and his family — wife, Valerie, and their four youngest children of seven total — moved to Northwest Arkansas from Las Cruces, N.M., where he had served as CEO of Mountain View Regional Medical Center since 2009.

Having been an avid community volunteer in the Las Cruces area, Park says the Northwest Arkansas community impressed him during his initial visit. He says the people he met during his tour of the Northwest Health facilities and the region were a big factor in his decision to relocate. “The people of Northwest Arkansas are awesome,” Park says. “They are kind and friendly. And Northwest Health offered a lot of opportunity.”

Park earned his master’s degree in business administration from New Mexico State University and his bachelor’s degree in business management and social business from Utah State University.

He has more than 20 years of executive management experience at hospitals, nursing homes and rehabilitation centers in Arizona, Wyoming and Utah. His accomplishments at the Las Cruces hospital included building New Mexico’s first free-standing emergency center and launching the first trauma program for the Las Cruces community.

Areas of healthcare where Park would like to grow services include thoracic, cardiovascular and vascular. He says there will also be a focus on emergency services, improving areas such as trauma, ambulance services and cardiovascular response. He says he also sees a need for growing behavioral health services in the area

and continuing to work on improving primary care access. “Northwest Health has done an amazing job so far in all of these areas,” Park says. “It’s just about taking the next steps and fine-tuning what we do.”

He says he is personally passionate about improving care for strokes, cardiovascular issues and obesity. He believes, in all three areas, early intervention means the patient has a good chance of returning to a life that is normal or near normal with fewer complications. “We give people their lives back,” Park says. “At the end of the day, it’s all about taking care of the patients.”

Park says he’s also excited about Northwest Health’s recent partnership with the Mayo Clinic, which allows local patients to receive consultations and second opinions from Mayo experts concerning complicated health issues. He says this gives patients access to world-class care without traveling and at no extra cost.

Overall, Park says Northwest Health has established a strong tradition of providing patients with quality care close to home, and this is a tradition he looks forward to building on. “We [Northwest Health] make a difference in people’s lives. We are a staple of this community,” Park says. “With five hospitals collectively, we have a place for everyone.” ■
