This competition calls for a new, innovative and high-design product that stimulates biodiversity in the city in a broad sense and at the same time contributes to the positioning of Mei architects and planners and Nice developers as a healthy and biodivers maker. We are looking for a creative approach to a design and a feasible product that serves a chosen target group and is reproducible on different scales.

Occasion

Nice developers and ERA Contour are developing SAWA: the first 50-metre high wooden residential building in Rotterdam. A unique property, located on Rotterdam’s Lloyd Pier. A dynamic area, rich in amenities.

The iconic SAWA building forms a new generation of buildings that are made entirely of wood and supports an environmentally friendly, sustainable and conscious way of living.

By developing SAWA, Nice aims to contribute to a healthier city. The design of SAWA is characterized by stepped green terraces, incorporated a sophisticated range of plants and flowers, composed in cooperation with ecologists. This not only defines the architectural beauty of SAWA, it is in particular good for strengthening biodiversity in the city.

Urgency

The SAWA apartments will go on sale in autumn/winter 2020 and the construction is scheduled to start in 2021. Currently the visibility of the project and initiators in the area is lacking.

Instead of building a classic construction board, Nice developers is in search of an eye-catching alternative, a statement, that serves multiple purposes:

❶ contributes positively to the positioning of Mei & Nice:

❷ strengthens the concept of SAWA:

+ nature inclusive + together (teamwork, community & collectively in the neighborhood) ❸ generates attention for the location (building plot) and SAWA to arise in

the neighborhood

Criteria

+ Clear and strong concept Make sure that the concept speaks for itself and is solid as a rock. Do not be afraid to make a statement.

+ Feasible / reproducible The aim is to produce the product and bring it to the market. Manufacturability and method is thus a hard requirement. An estimation of an attainable cost price is recommended.

+ Target group research & effectiveness Describe which insect/animal the product is addressing and demonstrate the effective functioning.

+ Sustainability in materialization and / or production Keep in mind that we feel that biodiversity and circularity go hand in hand. + Visible integration of the Mei/Nice branding It should be possible to visibly integrate / display the logo(s) of Mei and Nice developers.

Scalability There is no limitation on dimension or minimum size, but scalability is preferred, resulting in a product that can be used for a variety of purposes.

Who can participate?

+ Everyone of team Mei, current ànd of the past five years + Forming a team is allowed and recommended + External participants (beyond Mei) are allowed! with the condition that each team should consist at least one current or former Mei employee. + For a project to be accepted the team must be properly registered to the competition. Intellectual property

All the material submitted to the competition, including models and prototypes, will become part of Mei architects and planners. The issuing parties Mei architects and planners and Nice developers will have full rights to publish and promote this material, always making proper mention of their authors. The material might also be used for merchandising and exhibition purposes.

By submitting a proposal you are giving Mei architects and planners the right to use the received material in both printed and online publications. Mei architects and planners will also have the right to modify any of the mentioned material in order to better adapt it to the different formats and layouts that different publications might have.

All products resolving from the competition shall become the property of Mei architects and planners. Mei architects and planners will have full rights to produce and sell the products and reserves the right to modify a product during the production process and after.

Additional notes

1. The Kom BIJ Mei team reserves the right to make any changes to this document (dates, deadlines, requirements, etc.) as long as the changes benefit a majority of the competition participants. Any modifications will be announced on the Kom BIJ Mei webpage. It is each team’s responsibility to check the Kom BIJ Mei webpage on a regular basis to follow and incorporate all changes.

2. The purpose of this competition is a feasible and reproducible product. The Kom BIJ Mei team reserves the rights to not proceed with the competition, selection the TOP3 and awarding of the monetary prize during the first jurymoment, if the quality of the submitted products is lower than expected.

3. The Kom BIJ Mei team reserves the rights to deviate from the jury process in selecting less or more participating teams to the second round (final presentation) with a maximum of 5 participating teams. All participating teams for the second round will receive € 500,- to elaborate the design and build a functioning prototype. The jury aims to select one final winner, but reserves the right to bring the runners-up into production.

4. The jury decision is binding and can not be questioned.

5. By registering, all team members give permission to have their personal data (name & email address) used in the context of this competition, and in the communications of the issuing parties.

6. The Kom BIJ Mei team is not held responsible or liable in any way for any claims, damages, losses, expenses, costs or liabilities whatsoever, resulting or arising directly or indirectly from participating to this competition.
