Creative City Planning

Outside Ms. Buck’s 2nd grade classroom lays a 3-D model of a suburban city. In

social studies, students learned compared/contrasted urban, suburban and rural

communities. With careful, creative planning, a suburban map emerged from

ground up. Students laid out the ground, sketched the roads and painted the

waterways. Each child erected their own building – from coffee shops to banks to

grocery stores. As a collaborative team, the second graders placed their building

on the map to see their

planned city emerge. Using

the 21st century skills of

creativity, collaboration and

critical thinking, second

graders understand much

more than just the definition

of a suburban community!

SSDHDS is an Orthodox Jewish,

dual-curricular school committed to providing Jewish children of all back-grounds with an outstanding Judaic and secular education in a warm and caring environment. We share with

other preparatory schools an emphasis on the importance of hard work and diligence in the pursuit of excellence.

Our mission is to partner with

parents to instill in our students strong Jewish values fundamental to personal growth and moral development, while

nurturing each child’s intellectual curiosity and creativity and fostering a

lifelong love of Jewish learning and living. We believe that engaging the

child in Torah study is integral to developing Jewish pride and

appreciation of the importance of Jewish law and observance to the

continuity of our people.

We strive to imbue our students with our guiding principles: the centrality of Torah in daily life, the significance of

Israel to the Jewish people, self-respect and respect of others, and a sense of

responsibility to contribute to the betterment of our world.

Parshat Vayera

DRASHA: In truth, our mother Sarah, like many other mothers past and present in Jewish life, has not quite received her due. Rashi, quoting Midrash in describing Sarah’s life, states that all the years of Sarah’s life were “for good.” He must mean “for good” in a spiritual and holy sense, for in her physical worldly life there was little good that she experienced. Wandering over the Middle East by following her visionary husband to a strange and unknown destination; being forced into Pharaoh’s harem; being unable to conceive children; having her maidservant Hagar marry Avraham and attempt to usurp her position in the household; kidnapped by Avimelech, the king of the Philistines; seeing her precious son’s life threatened by an aggressive and violent step-brother, Yishmael; and passing away almost fifty years before her husband – this does not make for a happy resume of a life that was “all good.” In fact, it raises the eternal question of why do bad things happen to good people.

But powerless as we are to really answer that question cogently and logically, we should, in retrospect, view our mother Sarah with a renewed sense of awe and appreciation. Lesser people would have been crushed by such a cascade of events in one’s lifetime. The Mishna speaks of the ten tests in life that befell Avraham - and that he rose above all of them. We should also make mention of the tests in life that our mother Sarah endured in her existence and that she too rose above them.

“The wisdom of women builds their home,” said King Solomon. That certainly must be said of the house of Avraham, the founding home of the Jewish people. It was

Sarah’s wisdom and fortitude that was the foundation of that home.

In everyone’s life there are moments of danger, frustration, disappointment and even tragedy. Who amongst us can say in truth that all the years of our life were “all good?” This being the case we must revert to the understanding that since the “all good” in the life of our mother Sarah must perforce be interpreted in a spiritual sense – in a sense of continual service to God and man and a commitment to a higher level of living than mere physical existence and an optimistic frame of mind – so too must we search for such an “all good” interpretation in our individual lives as well.

The striving for finding such an “all good” approach to life is the essence of Torah and Jewish ritual. I once had to attend a rabbinical court here in Israel in order to register as being married. As often happens in government offices here the wait to be serviced was long and the ambience was not very pleasant. The clerk handling the matter was rather surly and disinterested in my problem.

Finally a wonderful rabbi came out of his inner office and took care of me and my need expeditiously and warmly. When I was foolish enough to begin to complain to him about the long wait and the less than forthcoming clerk, the rabbi gently shushed me and said: “Here in the Land of Israel all is good!” And when one is on that level of spiritually that is certainly true.

OVERVIEW: Parshat Chaye Sarah (Gen. Ch. 23 – 25:18) Sarah, Mother of the Jewish People, passes on at age 127. After mourning and eulogizing her, Avraham seeks to bury her in the Cave of Machpela. As this is the burial place of Adam and Chava, Avraham pays its owner, Ephron the Hittite, an exorbitant sum. Avraham sends his faithful servant Eliezer to find a suitable wife for his son, Yitzchak, making him swear to choose a wife only from among Avraham's family. Eliezer travels to Aram Naharaim and prays for a sign. Providentially, Rivka appears. Eliezer asks for water. Not only does she give him water, but she draws water for all 10 of his thirsty camels. (Some 140 gallons!) This extreme kindness marks her as the right wife for Yitzchak and a suitable Mother of the Jewish People. Negotiations with Rivka's father and her brother Lavan result in her leaving with Eliezer. Yitzchak brings Rivka into his mother Sarah's tent, marries her and loves her. He is then consoled for the loss of his mother. Avraham remarries Hagar who is renamed Ketura to indicate her improved ways. Six children are born to them. After giving them gifts, Avraham sends them to the East. Avraham passes away at the age of 175 and is buried next to Sarah in the Cave of Machpela.

The Soille Scene This Week

Family – Presented in Hebrew

Sixth Grade students prepared and presented a project about their family. Standing in front of the room, Hannah practiced her Hebrew conversational skills while she explained to the class about her family members, hobbies and other interesting facts. As with the entire sixth grade class, she enjoyed exploring her family’s information and using her Hebrew skills to express it. This project connected students to their own family and to the family of their classmates using a common, cultural language.

IMPORTANT HOT LUNCH NEWS: Same day hot lunch is now $6.

There is a limited amount of change available in the event that you don't have exact change for lunch. Please remember that lunch has to be paid for in advance. Place payments securely in the grey box on the wall next to the PTA bulletin board.

However, if its a same day hot lunch order, please give it to Annemarie at the front desk.

In the event that a student does not have lunch, they may have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

If your child prefers a hot lunch, you may pay for one hot lunch with credit card for $6.50 (includes the credit card 3% fee).

NEW: buy an emergency hot lunch card for one child for $45. You get 8 lunches and it includes the 3% fee. The lunches come to $5.50/lunch and can only be used one card per child. Example: if you have three children that want hot lunch you will need to buy three cards.

The Itsy Bitsy Spider

After reading the well known Itsy Bitsy Spider poem, the first graders began a week of activities. In Science, students learned facts about spiders characteristics and behaviors and labeled diagrams. In Math, students completed spider addition tables and used deductive reasoning skills. In Language, students wrote their own comical versions of Itsy Bitsy Spider and practiced sequencing events in the poem. Lastly the students drew and colored realistic looking spiders to go with their poems which will be on display outside the first grade classrooms.

Alumna Rachel (Seidle) Eden Returns

to Hebrew Day Rachel Seidle Eden, an alumna of Soille Hebrew Day

School has returned to San Diego and is teaching in our

Day School after having graduated 8th grade, about 16

years ago. Rachel attended Hebrew Day from

Kindergarten until 8th grade, graduating in 1997. She

recalls many favorite teachers, including: Mrs. Jan

Landau, Mrs. Temi Hollander, Rabbi Marks, Mrs. Weiser,

Mrs. Wohlgelernter and Rabbi Hollander.

Rachel went to YULA of Los Angeles for high school, then

to Michelet Esther Seminary in Israel. She continued on to

Stern and Touro College where she got her BA. Rachel

credits her Jewish pride and Jewish educational path to

attending Hebrew Day. She states that the secular

academics prepared her very well for high school. The

students all felt unconditionally loved due to the warmth

of the administration and the staff. Rachel met her

husband, Daniel, while he was learning at Ner Israel in

Baltimore. They moved to Israel and then later to Los

Angeles as religious directors of University of Southern

California for the Jewish Awareness Movement. They

moved to San Diego this past summer.

Rachel teaches the first graders and seventh grade girls.

Her son in Kindergarten adores his teachers and has had a

seamless and happy transition.

We are very happy to have Rachel back and wish her

much success and happiness here in San Diego and in our

Hebrew Day School!

Sustaining American Jewish Life A recently released survey conducted by the Pew Research Center claimed that among the non-Orthodox majority in the United States (approximately 90%), most are not marrying fellow Jews. Some have interpreted these findings as predicting that the number of Jews in America is fast dwindling. One Hebrew Day family wrote in to comment on these dire predictions:

I recently read a commentary stating that “increasingly large number of Jews have notions of Jewish identity that are based on values not likely to promote future generations of Jewish life.” I believe that the critical component of giving children a solid base of personal Jewish knowledge is being overlooked. Being a Conservative Jew myself, I take a very important lesson from the Orthodox - the centrality and profound importance of a solid Jewish education. I believe that the key to the survival of American Judaism, and for that matter Judaism in totality, is knowledge. When I look at my non-Orthodox peers, the biggest glaring deficit I see is our own lack of knowledge on Judaism. How are we supposed to incorporate Judaism into our lives and our identities, and how are we supposed to transmit that Judaism in a meaningful enough way for it to survive for future generations, if it is based on a patchwork knowledge of Judaism and the feelings in our hearts? I believe our answer is to give our children the same Jewish education as the Orthodox. We also need a better education in Jewish history, law, practice and culture in order to truly own our Judaism. Without this sound foundational base of Jewish knowledge, how can one actually choose what kind of Jew they want to be? It is because of this idea that my husband and I have chosen to send our children to an Orthodox day school. Our family still belongs to a Conservative synagogue, as do many of our peers at our day school. We want our children to know their Judaism in their minds, not just their hearts. We want our children to have a sense of ownership in their Judaism that will live past their childhood memories of being raised in a Jewish home and observing Jewish holidays. We want for them to go out into the world knowing why they are Jews and how to observe to any level, so that they can create their own Jewish identities and G-d willing, their own Jewish families. I hope that in the future we will see more parents from all approaches to Judaism making the same educational choice that we have. With Heartfelt Appreciation, A Hebrew Day School PArent

Food Justice Fellow Visit This morning we greeted the Food Justice Fellow consort who have assembled in North County San Diego and are establishing a wonderful new initiative throughout the community. With the vision of the Leichtag Foundation behind them, each fellow will take a leadership role in eradicating hunger, planting affordable and sustainable option for healthy eating, and promote self-sufficiency. Drawing on the wonderful Jewish tradition of agricultural sharing and coming from a range of personal backgrounds, the fellows visited to understand Hebrew Day School’s place within the community better and to begin exploring additional ways our children can be guided toward fulfilling this lofty mission. Rabbi Andy Kastner is the group’s leader. Look for a fruitful partnership to develop over the coming months.

Ethan Gipsman Now and Then

We happily received photos of Ethan Gipsman (HDS Class of 2007) showing Ethan holding a soldiers rifle during his 8th Grade Israel trip, and today upon his induction as a sol-dier into the IDF. We are very proud to have participated in Ethan’s basic training.

Tale of Two Tents Last week our students enjoyed welcoming guests into the Tent of Abraham and bringing to life the practice of kindness as exemplified in the households of Abraham and Sarah.. We also spoke with our students about the specialness of Sarah’s tent, which was a more hidden place for connecting to Hashem and gaining the inspiration it takes to sustain kindliness over a life-time. This proved to be an important topic of conversation, and led to many of us thinking hard not only about how we can help make the world a better place, but make this a lifelong focus to be built upon over many years. Hebrew Day School’s 51 year track record of education shows not only how stimulated a child can become at school, but how ideals learned and practice dur-ing the early years can become part of who we truly are, and be carried through every stage of life.

Pirkei Avot Keeps Growing!

This week we had over 40 kids this week. The Mishnah discussed the different types of learners that students can be and the importance of reviewing information that is learned in order to really remember it. We all discussed both in small groups and as well together in a big group what each of us can do to remember that which we learn. Everyone had fun and enjoyed the learning.
