What is it?A hybrid AM ("XM") screening technology in which FM screening techniques are used the highlight and shadow areas of the AM screen.

Purpose/Goal Maxtone Screenning recovers those parts of the tonal scale that would be otherwise lost due to resolution limitations in either the plate imaging process or on press. It improves highlight detail and vignette transitions by allowing the prepress operator to restrict the imaged highlight and shadow dots to the minimum reproducible dot size at which point same-sized dots are removed in FM-like manner to create lighter and darker tones.
