Kodak HyperFlex Resolution Enhancement Software

What is it?A plate resolution enhancement technology that makes flexographic platemaking and printing more predictable, reliable and consistent.

Purpose/Goal HyperFlex Software allows small halftone dots to be formed and held on a photopolymer plate throughout the print process.

Target customers It is used by flexographic printers, converters and trade shops (that have installed Kodak ThermoFlex Platesetters.)

Features and Benefits• Uses a UV light filter technique to support and strengthen

small dots by thickening the surrounding photopolymer• Increases the effective resolution of the flexo plate and

allows highlights to be reproduced more faithfully, with a less discernible transition in vignettes

• Can be applied to normal AM screening, as well as Kodak Maxtone Screening

• Provides ability to control plate relief locally and globally• User-definable size, placement and range of application• Helps improve process stability and deliver more consistent

results over time• Enables reuse of plates, by having greater resistance to

solvent attack and abrasion during wash-up.Recipient of three industry technology awards: 2005 FPPA Technology Innovator of the Year Award; 2004 FTA Technical Innovation Award; 2003 GATF InterTech Technology Award.

Flexographic screeningColour and screening solutions

Page 34: Kodak Solutions Guide EAMER May 2008

34

Kodak Maxtone CX Screening

What is it?A hybrid AM ("XM") screening technology in which FM screening techniques are used the highlight and shadow areas of the AM screen.

Purpose/Goal Maxtone Screenning recovers those parts of the tonal scale that would be otherwise lost due to resolution limitations in either the plate imaging process or on press. It improves highlight detail and vignette transitions by allowing the prepress operator to restrict the imaged highlight and shadow dots to the minimum reproducible dot size at which point same-sized dots are removed in FM-like manner to create lighter and darker tones. Dots remain on the AM grid and are still imaged at fixed screen angles.

Target customers This software is typically used for flexographic applications, but may also be used in certain cases for offset printing.

Features and Benefits• Prevents the formation of dots that are too small for the

flexo plate media to image• Optimal for feathered images, drop shadows, line work and

vignettes• Adjustable highlight/shadow minimum dot size provides

optimal resolution control• Saves time in prepress by minimising the need to apply

“bump” curves and to adjust images.

Kodak's Value-Add• Maxtone Screening works in tandem with award-winning

HyperFlex Technology to improve the resolution of flexographic plates

• Kodak Professional Color Services Implementation for optimal results.
