Dear Friends of Knuston HallWe hope you enjoy having a browse through this brochure, which contains all the talks, day courses and residential courses we are running between October 2016 and the end of March 2017. Towards the back of the brochure, we give brief details of all the other courses from April 2017 that we know about. You can book on any of these courses simply by calling 01604 362200.

Our website www.knustonhall.org.uk already contains an enormous amount of information about our future courses and learning events and this information is now online much earlier than had been the case.

Also, we now provide a regularly updated grid on the wall in the dining room corridor where you can study the details of courses and learning events a long way into the future. Sometimes, however, the best thing to do is to pick up the phone or wait until your next visit and pop your head in the door of the office to sort out all future bookings.

Regular visitors to Knuston Hall will know first hand how our courses, provided in a relaxed environment with great food and friendly staff, are a great boost to their wellbeing. For this reason we are pleased to join a number of services, which exist to make people feel healthier and happier, in a new organisation called First for Wellbeing (FfW). These services offer help with emotional wellbeing, weight management, smoking and other things which you might like to improve.

If you would like to find out more about the full range of services designed to help you increase your wellbeing, why not get in touch? You can visit our website www.firstforwellbeing.co.uk or call 0300 126 5000.

Best Wishes

Enrolment & General Information

Enrolling, Deposits and Balances

Each course booking requires a deposit of £40. Day courses and shorter events require the full fee payable on enrolment. You can enrol using the telephone, email or in person. Unfortunately it is not possible to reserve a place unless the deposit is paid or is on its way in the post, in which case the place will be held for five days. Once the deposit has been paid, this is taken as confirmation that the course is booked and you will attend. A receipt and full course details will follow when they are available. The balance of the fee is due one month before the course. If we have not received the balance at this time we will contact you for payment. If the balance is not settled following a reminder, we reserve the right to offer that place to another applicant.

Catering/Special Dietary Requirements

All meals and refreshments are included in the residential price of courses. Meals and refreshments are also included for those who choose to join a course as a non-resident with the exception of breakfast.Whilst we cannot cater for a wide range of likes and dislikes, we can cater for vegetarian, vegan, ‘no red meat’ and gluten-free diets, if booked in advance. Please mention your special diet EVERY time you enrol so that records can be kept up to date. If you have any serious allergies to food types, please inform us when you enrol, and remind us on arrival.

Arrival and Departure Times

Many courses have standard ‘weekend’ timings, so unless your course details state otherwise, arrival on day 1 is usually from 5.30pm in time for the meal at 7pm. We now have a lunch talk programme on specific Fridays so weekend guests can have the option of arriving early. See pages 26 and 27 for details. If there is no lunch talk, why not come for lunch anyway? Call 01604 362200 to book. On the final day of weekend courses, departure is approximately 3.30pm. However, we ask that bedrooms

are vacated by 9.30am unless you are informed that this is not necessary. PLEASE read your course details carefully as day courses and longer courses have different timings.

Cancellations, Refunds and Transfer of Fees

We suggest you take out your own insurance in case you have to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances.Residential Courses: If cancellation is as a result of a medical condition for which you can provide certification, your deposit is transferable and your balance is refundable. If, however, it is not as a result of a medical condition and it is more than two weeks before the course starts, your balance is refundable and your deposit transferable apart from a £10 ‘admin fee’. If it is not as a result of a medical condition, and is within two weeks of the start of the course, no refund or transfer of fees is possible. A deposit can only be transferred as a deposit on a new enrolment. No fees can be transferred to another person. Day Courses: More than two weeks before the course, the fees are refundable apart from a £10 admin fee. The Reverend Timothy Molesworth cares for two separate parishes, the villages of Wizzen-in-the-Wind and Relly-In-The-Mire. Join him on the first night of your stay as he and some of his flock performs an excerpt from their forthcoming pageant to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the church’s stained glass windows. Hopefully no violent bewildering mysterious murder will occur as you will have to take the part of an amateur sleuth to solve a most perplexing case.

After breakfast the following morning, your investigations continue until you are able to accuse someone before lunch. The end of case one means you can have some relaxing time that afternoon where there will be the opportunity to be entertained by one of the villagers with his Murderous Mystery Magic Show.

Saturday evening brings everyone back together again for case two – a historic case from the neighbouring village is presented to you. A year ago a terrible incomprehensible killing occurred, one which has never been solved. Put on your deerstalker thinking caps as the circumstances are re-created for you to sift through. Meet the suspects, question them and filter out the red herrings. Just before bed, some last minute clues will be revealed.

After breakfast the next morning, your investigations continue until a final complete solution is unveiled. This is followed by a triumphant last lunch before detectives take their leave knowing justice has at last been done.

During the weekend you meet all the suspects involved in both adventures, your only role is to be the detective deciding who is innocent and who is guilty.

K518 ‘Globe to Globe’: A History of Music Associated With William Shakespeare (Part 2)

Weekend: 3–5 February 2017Tutor: Julian Williamson Standard Weekend Price: See aboveThis second course will carry on where the first left off but can be enjoyed on its own if you missed the first episode. It will take us through the 19th and 20th centuries where we find Shakespeare translated into many languages which sparked an interest in some of the leading composers on the continent. This produced a marked change in approach to compositions associated with the plays. Straight incidental music began to

be replaced by fully-fledged concert pieces and operas based sometimes quite loosely on the great man’s work. Mendelssohn, Berlioz, Wagner, Verdi and many others fell under his spell and we will investigate how their music was often heavily influenced by him. This trend was carried into the 20th century where we find another change appearing in the rise of the cinema, producing some remarkable music by Shostakovich, Walton and others. Finally, with the rise of research into authentic productions, theatres such as the Royal Shakespeare Company began to try and recreate the aura of the Elizabethan stage. This was brought into sharp focus with the opening of the new Globe Theatre in the 1990s which brings us almost full circle. Through all this extraordinary history I hope to show how the spirit of Shakespeare continues to live on through music and provide magic for us all.

How to find Knuston Hall

By Road: Knuston Hall is situated on the B569 between Irchester and Rushden in East Northamptonshire. Drivers should approach through Irchester from the A45 from where the hall is clearly signposted. Signs direct Eastbound drivers onto the Westbound carriageway into Irchester. Whilst Higham Ferrers and Rushden offer a wide variety of shops and interesting buildings for guests with a little free time, some junctions in these areas do not make it clear where Knuston Hall is located. Therefore, travellers are advised to stick to major routes. If you experience problems, please phone Knuston on 01604 362200.

By Rail: Wellingborough station is 5 miles away (London St. Pancras approx 1hr). Bedford 14 miles (approx 45mins).

Taxi Service: Taxis are usually waiting at Wellingborough railway station. They will take you to the hall at a reasonable charge. The cost will be considerably more from other stations. Taxis for the return journey can be booked in the college office.

Bus Service: The X46 and X47 bus routes stop at the gates of Knuston Hall between the town of Rushden and the village of Irchester. Both services run from Monday to Saturday but only the X47 runs on Sundays.
