PRESBYERIANS SHARING - Nigerian Presbyterian Mission, TorontoA
Its a beautiful Sunday afternoon, warm and sunny. From the open windowsof Weston Presbyterian Church, the sound of rhythmic drumming and hand-clapping fills the air. Joyful voices are raised in rich harmony to glorify andthank God. In the sanctuary, men and women, boys and girls in brightlycoloured traditional clothing are dancing their offering to the front of thechurch, accompanied by traditional Nigerian instruments. This joyfilledworship happens weekly at the Nigerian Presbyterian Mission in Toronto. Many Nigerian Presbyterians have moved into the Toronto area over the past
20 years. Because they are used to a lively style of worship back home, manyhave drifted away from traditional Presbyterian churches. And yet, they feelstrongly connected to their Presbyterian roots and yearn to worship using theNigerian Presbyterian liturgy. The Presbyterian Church of Nigeria asked The Presbyterian Church inCanada to work in partnership with them and set up a ministry for Nigerians inCanada. The Reverend Augustus Oku, a minister from Nigeria, was chosen toresearch the feasibility of this ministry, and to suggest a location that would
best serve the most people. When Torontos Weston neighbourhoodemerged as the most promising, the Presbytery of West Toronto began toestablish a Nigerian mission while Augustus returned to Nigeria. English waschosen as the common language for worship. The Nigerian ministry emphasises hospitality, not just church growth. It helpsnew immigrants integrate into their new lives in Canada. Members visitelderly people in the community, providing support and car. They reach outwith the love of Christ to everyone in this multi-ethnic neighbourhood, not justNigerians.
