As the first level of critical thinking defined in Bloom’sTaxonomy, knowledge is the least complex and abstract. It is theobtaining and recall of information.

Knowledge is an important step in the building of effectivethinking and problem solving skills. If students are unable to “get”the information or recall it, their ability to think and reasonefficiently is very limited.

The activities in this unit provide practice in a variety of areasemphasizing knowledge. They help students identify those skillswhich require the ability to find and remember information.

All activities are reproducible for use in a variety of teaching,practice, and reinforcement situations. They are appropriate forwhole class, small group, or individual use. Oral discussion of thework as it is completed will increase the level of studentunderstanding.

When winter comes, people wear warmer clothes and turn on their heaters. Animals mustprepare for cold weather, too.

Some animals hibernate. This means they spend thewinter sleeping. Chipmunks build warm nests in whichto spend the winter. Frogs cover themselves with mudat the bottom of ponds. Bears and bats sleep in warm,dark caves until spring.

Many animals stay awake and active. They have ways to protect themselves from the cold.The fox has a thick fur coat to protect it. The polar bear also has a warm coat to keep it warm.The owl can fluff up its feathers, which keeps the heat of its body in. One kind of bird, theptarmigan, grows feathers on its feet during winter. This makes it easy to walk on snow andice.

Pioneer Homes

Pioneers were very careful about choosing a place to build their homes. They had to havewater nearby for drinking and cooking. They also needed many trees around. These were usedfor building the home and for making fires. The other thing they needed was good soil to growfood.

When the pioneers built a home, they put the walls up first. They cut logs and made slots sothey would fit together. Then, they set one log on top of another to make a wall. The roof wenton last. It was made of big pieces called “clapboard.” Then, they covered the roof with bark fromthe trees.
