Ethics…….defined;
“A discipline dealing with good and evil and with moral duty” (Webster’s Dictionary)
“Doing the right thing when nobody is looking”.
(paraphrase from Henry Ford.)
WHY must we consider Ethics in the role of Direct Support Professionals??
Every day Direct Support Professionals help make decisions
with the people they support.
Decisions based on what one thinks is ok, good or right will lead to a slippery slope into possible unethical practice.

An appetizer…..The following “Encounter” is meant to be a brief but powerful introduction to the NADSP
Code of Ethics.
The Code will NOT give you answers to situations in your practice. It is strictly and only a guideline and road map for decision
making.
The Code is not only for direct support professionals BUT is to be embraced and
understood by all levels of an organization.National Alliance for Direct Supprofessionals
(NADSP)
IMPORTANT MESSAGE!Under no circumstances is the following
activity and role play meant to mock, degrade or hurt people giving or receiving
support.
This is a time-tested and very powerful but unorthodox way in which to learn about
ethics.
We believe it is impossible to learn the code of ethics any other way.
You will be asked to leave the room if I feel you are being disrespectful.
Meet John.....48 years of age

Small Group Exercise 1
• In your group share some stories from your life that are associated with “ethical” dilemmas
• Using the tenets of the Code of Ethics discuss ways that the particular situation in your story may have been better addressed
• Elect one story to share with the entire reconvened group and together we will look at that story in light of the Code and discover new insights
• PLEASE ensure confidentiality in your sharing….no names and please change any identifying details that may disclose anyone you support

Small Group Exercise 2• Choose ONE of the tenets of the Code of Ethics
• Create a role play in your group that addresses that particular tenet. Get creative and have some fun but devise your own “encounter” to share with your colleagues when we reconvene.
• The power of role play in bringing the Code to a real life and practical application is profound
• Please remember that role plays MUST be respectful in their language and the “acting” that takes place
