Thresholds/PeriodizationsWhat is a thresholds or periodization:

The way history is divided into discrete and definable periods.

For example: Neolithic Revolution or Industrial Revolution

These periods are marked by turning points, or dates when a number of

important and long lasting changes can be identified for the largest number of

people.

There are competing models of periodization.

Some turning points may be more import to some regions or cultures of the world

than another.

If the length of the room represented :13.7 Billion years how ‘significant’ is our modern era in relation to the rest of the

world’s history?

1 inch = 40.8 million years (scale 1)

1 foot= 2.04 billion years (scale 2)

Place each threshold or period at the appropriate place on the line.

Be prepared to defend why you placed it where you did.

Thresholds/Periodization: 1.LIfe on Earth

2.Stars light up

Directions:Use bighistoryproject.com to explore your threshold or period.

Create visual on a notecard.

Use a black sharpie to write the date on one side.

Be prepared to share your event and why its a threshold or significant period in history.

For Origin stories you will read one paragraph aloud that grabbed your attention.

Compressed Time: One more analogy to understand time, history and our place in the universe…..

If the universe had begun 13 years ago, then, at this

moment...

The Earth would have

existed for about...5 years

Large organisms with many cells would have existed for about...7 months

The asteroids that killed off dinosaurs would have landed...3 weeks ago

Hominids would have existed for...3 days

Our own species, Homo sapiens would have existed for...53 minutes

Agricultural societies would have existed for...5 minutes

The entire recorded history of civilization would have

existed for...3 minutes

Modern industrial societies would have existed for...6 seconds

The Internet, as we know it, would have existed less

than...1 second
