THE MAIN THING
THE CROSS
Jesus Himself said the whole reason He came to Earth was to die so that we could be saved.
Mark 10:45
Luke 19:10
THE CROSS
Redeem: to buy out, especially to purchase a slave with a view to his freedom
Ransom: to pay for the release of someone or something from captivity
GOD’S PLAN FOR MAN
Because we—men, women, boys, and girls—are naturally drawn to sin, we are separated from holy God.
Romans 3:23
Isaiah 59:2
Fortunately, God is merciful and has made a way for us to be brought back into a right relationship with Him.
GOD’S PLAN FOR MAN
THE MAIN THING
The sacrificial system of the Old Testament (OT) was the first method of atoning for sin.
See Leviticus 1:1-4
The sacrificial system of the OT was merely symbolic of what Christ would eventually do on the cross.
See Hebrews 10:1-4, 8-12
THE SACRIFICIAL SYSTEM
Atone: to cover; figuratively, to placate (to ease the anger or agitation) or cancel
The Passover, also, was an illustration of what Christ would ultimately accomplish on the cross.
Read Exodus 12:3, 5-7, 12-13
Like the Passover sacrifice, Jesus was “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).
THE SACRIFICIAL SYSTEM
Christ died for us; He died in our place
I Peter 3:18a
Christ (the righteous One), died for us (the unrighteous ones).
II Corinthians 5:21
Christ became sin for us so that we could become righteous.
I Peter 2:24
Jesus took on our sins on the cross so that we could live for righteousness rather than for sin.
OUR SUBSTITUTE
CHRIST’S DEATH AND THE OLD TESTAMENT
The eventual victory over evil has been prophesied since Genesis See Genesis 3:15
Many passages in the OT make reference to the Messiah who would come to save us from sin. See Isaiah 53:5-12
The OT prophets lived between 700 to 500 years before Christ was born. They were writing about things they never got to see,
but which God had revealed to them.
I Peter 1:10-12
The prophets were writing for OUR benefit!
CHRIST’S DEATH AND THE OLD TESTAMENT
Jesus Himself verified that the Old Testament scriptures referred to Him.
John 5:39-40
