COURAGE LION PROGAM

Joan Gunter

The Courage Lion Program is dedicated to children who are entering the hospital for a serious illness, injury or surgery. Each Courage Lion comes with the book “Courage Pockets”, which introduces the story of a young lion, Duffy, who faces the challenge of recovering from an injury. Duffy is a therapeutic animal used to enhance communication and is intended to reduce anxiety and fear. The KC Ladies Auxiliary sponsors the Courage Lion Program at Saint Stephen Catholic Community and would like to help each hospitalized child through what could be a frightening experience by giving him/her a “Duffy” Courage Lion of their own. If you have a child entering the hospital please call Joan Gunter, KCLA, at 773-8518.

FIRST FRIDAY ADORATION IS September 6 Please make it a point this year to attend at least one First Friday Adoration in the Church at 7:00 pm. Come spend a quiet hour with Jesus. Spending time alone with God rids our minds of distraction so that we can focus on Him and hear His Word. Abiding in Him, we enjoy the intimacy to which He calls us and come to truly know Him. What better place to spend some time in adoration and prayer.

Saturday, August 6th it was Christmas in July for Caring Choices which provides pregnancy counseling and adoption services through Catholic Charities of TN. Ladies of Charity – Lay Spiritual Moderator Submitted by: Helen Walsh Our own KCLA President, Lorine Bourland wears many hats. On Friday, August 12, 2016, she was installed as the Lay Spiritual Moderator for Ladies of Charity in Nashville. Sister Fran Ryan was at the August membership meeting to officially install Lorine in the position. Lorine has been performing the duties of Lay Spiritual Moderator since late summer of 2014, all while learning Vincentian Spirituality.

Lorine writes the reflections for the Ladies of Charity newsletter and the Devotionals for the board meetings. The August meeting was hosted by the Ladies of Saint Stephen Catholic Community and they provided the delicious food for the luncheon. Father Pat Kibby and Deacon Fred Bourland were also present.

Father Kibby was the Celebrant for the Mass. Pictured are: Deacon Fred Bourland, Lucky VanDeGejuchte, Lorine Bourland, Sister Ryan and Father Patrick Kibby

Sister Fran Ryan explaining the process of becoming a Lay Spiritual Moderator. Thank you Lorine – your written reflections are wonderful and God filled.

ANGELS IN OUR CITY – Submitted by: Helen Walsh With everything happening in our world these days, all the drama with the upcoming Presidential elections, horrible news every night; we need to hear Good, see Good and do Good. We need to turn our attention to the good things happening in our world, not ignoring the bad, but also not dwelling on it all the time. So, with that being said: There are “angels in our midst”. Every day people touch the lives and hearts of people everywhere. What may seem small to some, is huge for others. We see it every day within the community of St. Stephen and throughout our city but do we really pay attention. I want to tell you a couple stories and hope that you will submit some stories to me that you know of people that go above and beyond. I would love to feature them in our newsletter. Our own recent Lady of the Year, Jeannine Mackie, handmade a beautiful “jelly roll” dress for our Granddaughter, Charlotte. Charlotte has met Ms. Jeannine many times and looks for her at the Halloween party, Breakfast with Santa and the Easter Egg Hunt. Here is Charlotte wearing her dress to Mass at St Stephen. Jeannine you are a special lady. Charlotte loves her dress; it is truly beautiful. She received many compliments when she wore it to

Church. Jeannine – thank you.

Charlotte Grace Walsh The Band Director at William Henry Oliver Middle School in Nashville, Susan Waters, has been purchasing white shirts at Goodwill (money out of her own pocket) for her band students who cannot afford to buy a shirt. She also buys black dress pants and black shoes whenever she sees them or her budget allows. The band students wear the black and white for special performances they present at the school throughout the year. I heard about this from our Son, Jason, who teaches at Overton High School. It seems the Band Directors of Metro are one big family and the KCLA is also known among them for offering them a helping hand when needed. In the past, the KCLA has collected shoes and clothes for Overton High School and the KCLA continues the coat drive for McMurray Middle School each November. Every Sumner, the KCLA gives a donation for an unwed young Mother to attend a camp to learn to take care of her newborn. Seems like Camille Multra is always carrying something around or bringing and taking clothes, food, boxes, toys, and “stuff” everywhere. Camille is an active St. Stephen KCLA member and is always

helping others and constantly collecting clothes for others. Recently Camille was the recipient of several “huge” boxes of shirts and other clothes. Somehow they ended up in my garage. There are no coincidences – here is Ms. Waters with an

arm full of washed, pressed, white shirts. Thought I had given up ironing but glad I kept that “hot thing”. Thank you Camille! By the way, keep an eye open for dress black pants and black dress shoes – just saying. So, come on and tell me those “angel stories for the newsletter.”

Pro-Life Submitted by Pam Wegenka and Kathy Walsh

“Simply being pro-life doesn’t save babies. Acting pro-life does.” Wilson County Right to Life is a non-profit, charitable organization which works to advocate respect for human life through public education, protective public policy and the development of an active pro-life movement in our community.

Usually during business hours there will be trained sidewalk advocates who will try to speak with the women and men offering them safer, happier alternatives.

Everyone will be in prayer while out on the sidewalk. We hope that this experience, whether you are a "veteran" or a "first-timer," will help you to comprehend the gravity of the situation that these women face and the importance of our loving presence on the sidewalk. Please park on Pearl Street. Kick off rally at St. Edward Catholic Church on September 30, Mass at 6:30 followed by a rally at 7:30. Our KCLA Group is scheduled to pray at Planned Parenthood on Friday mornings at 10:00. We are not limited to praying only on Friday. Protect The People's Vote on Amendment 1:

Sign the 6th Circuit Court Amicus Brief

http://www.yeson1tn.org/protect_the_peoples_vote

Rather than accept defeat, Planned Parenthood is willing to disenfranchise pro-life voters in order to ensure that Tennessee remains an abortion destination. That was unacceptable on Election Day 2014 and it remains so nearly two years after clear public approval of Amendment 1. On November 4, 2014, Tennessee voters approved passage of pro-life Amendment 1 to the Tennessee Constitution by a margin of 53-47 percent. Three days later, Planned Parenthood Board Chair, Tracey E. George and other Planned Parenthood Board members filed a federal lawsuit claiming that their voting rights had been violated and that ballots were not properly counted.

Yes on 1 calls the lawsuit one more example of pro-abortion activists refusing to trust the common sense and compassion of Tennesseans who largely favor legal protections for abortion-vulnerable women, girls and unborn children in our state. "Amendment 1 was passed with a clear majority of Tennesseans casting a vote to approve the language," said Brian Harris, coordinator for Yes on 1 Ballot Committee. "No voter should be stripped of their right to effect social change with their vote or to positively impact the public policies of their community, state and nation." On April 22, 2016, Federal District Court Judge Kevin Sharp ruled in favor of the Planned Parenthood plaintiffs and demanded a recount of the ballots on Amendment 1. Sharp also maintained that the ballot of any Tennessean having voted for Amendment 1 but not also casting a vote in the Governor's race must be thrown out. The case is now on appeal to the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati with a hearing date to be set. The Yes on 1 Ballot Committee urges concerned Tennesseans to Protect the People's Vote on Amendment 1 by signing the Friend-of-the-Court (amicus) brief being filed by Yes on 1.
