Recording Secretary’s Report Recorder, Tom Nicholas, read the minutes for the May meeting. As there were no corrections the minutes were approved as read. Admissions Committee Report Warden Jim Arns, Sr., reporting for Chancellor Jim Arns, Jr., noted as of May 30, we have net additions of 5 to our Council for the year. Our Membership Quota is 26 and Insurance Quota is 9 for the 2013-2014 Fraternal Year. We have a total of 384 members, 160 insurance members, 13 honorary, and 85 honorary life members. Jim also read in a Form 100 for a candidate. A motion was made to accept the candidate for membership and approved unanimously by the council.

If any 1st degree member is interested in attending an upcoming 2nd & 3rd degree exemplification, the closest one scheduled is in Chicago on Sunday, July 27th at St. Alphonsus. Holy Ghost picks up the cost of the 2nd & 3rd degree exemplifications. Please contact Chancellor Jim Arns, Jr. if you are interested in attending an exemplification.

Grand Knight’s Report

Thank You Letters and Acknowledgements Father Robert Barron from Mundelein Seminary thanked the Knights for their recent $500 donation to

help with heating costs from this past winter. NWSRA, Special Olympics Illinois, Sunday Recreation/ Best Buddies, Mount St. Joseph, and Mision San

Juan Diego all thanked the Knights for our recent donations. These are all recipient organizations of awards handed out at the ID Drive Banquet this past May.

Michael Nicholas, son of Brother Tom Nicholas, was selected as a winner of the Knights of Columbus John W. McDevitt Scholarship. Michael will attend Marquette University in the fall. Congratulations to Michael Nicholas!

Thank you to the Brother Knights and Ladies Auxiliary who helped clean out and organize our storage in the lower Dolan Center!

Special Olympics Grand Knight, Larry Ruff, reported that on July 27th, there will be a Kane County Cougars baseball

game in support of Special Olympics Illinois. A flyer with sign up information will be emailed separately. Contact Larry Ruff to get more information about this event.

Michael J. McGivney Center of Hope and Healing Holy Family Knights are sponsoring a golf tournament on Monday, June 23 at Cary Country Club with a

shot gun start at 1:30pm. This year the goal of the outing is to provide support to the Michael J. McGivney Center of Hope and Healing. The center is located in a former convent building on the north side of Chicago. It is now a home for women that have chosen life for their unborn children. They provided care to women with difficult pregnancies who carry their babies to term. All of the golf outing proceeds will go to benefit the center. The goal is to raise $4,000 to $5,000 for the center.

Holy Ghost has agreed to be a beverage sponsor for the tournament. We are grateful for the 3 anonymous donations we received from the council to be a beverage sponsor of this event.

Officer Installation The Officer Installation was held Friday, June 13th. Officers elected at the June business were

installed for the fraternal year beginning July 1, 2014. Congratulations to our new officers! Council Records and Storage Holy Ghost storage currently consists of 5 storage cabinets in the back room of the lower Dolan

Center. We share that room with the boy scouts and anyone else who decides to put their items back there. We also share that space with the tables and chairs used for events. In addition to the back room, we have a closet in the kitchen of the lower Dolan Center that holds more of our items used for events where we prepare food.

In the back room, we store our valuables in the locked cabinets and other paper good items unlocked in boxes on top of the cabinets. With the help of some Brother Knights and Ladies Auxiliary, this past month we cleaned out all of our storage, organized it and condensed it into fewer boxes.

Although our storage area looks pretty good now, there are some things the council should consider for the future. I would like to point out some concerns in regards to our current storage situation including council records:

• The boy scouts and other groups have taken over most of the remaining space in the back room. • There is an old Zenith TV (1960’s or 1970’s maybe) and rack that has been untouched for years

taking up precious space. • Because the room is now crammed with more items (wooden structures, foosball table and old

altar), someone is more likely to get hurt while accessing our items. I fell the day we were cleaning up our storage. Fortunately, I missed the wooden structures and landed in a tiny clearing of the floor.

• Three of our cabinets are in poor condition. • Our coolers, which are unlocked items, are now missing. • All council records, plaques and many event items are currently stored many of our Brothers

homes. • We have no storage for council records.

Many of the council’s historical records are with our former financial secretary, Stewart Tesnow. Stu

is going to go through the records himself and determine which records may be destroyed over the next several months. Once Stu cleans that up, the council will need to find a home for the remaining records, which must be kept.

Over the past month, I discussed our storage situation with Father Tim. I had asked if we could build storage in the center room in the lower Dolan Center.

Father said that St. Theresa will undergo a Master Planning process to address future needs of the parish this summer. An architect has been hired and a committee started composed of business people, administrators in the parish and people with connections in the construction business with a committee composed of business.

Pending outcome of this project, he asked Holy Ghost to hold off on any storage initiative until the project is completed. He also pointed out to me that the Knights do have representation on the Master Planning committee because he is a 4th degree Knight himself. There will be more to come on this later in the year as the Master Plan moves forward.

Speaker Series Grand Knight, Larry Ruff, reported that on the results of the Marriage on Fire. Although attendance

was pretty good, it was not nearly enough to cover their costs. They had to request concessions from the speakers, and several of the organizations that provided items for the wine and cheese gathering after the event. This helped minimize the losses on the event.

They did thank the Knights for our donation (See the June 8th bulletin). They do not have a date, yet, but are tentatively planning on “parenting” as their next topic.

Brothers Recognized and Certificates Presented

Grand Knight Larry Ruff presented Certificates of Appreciation for all of the Brother Knights that stepped forward this past Fraternal Year by taking a leadership role (chairman or co-chairman) or major part in one or more Service Programs. Not all Brother Knights were in attendance at business meeting, so a complete list of those Brother Knights to be recognized follows:

Tom Mullen and John Breit John Breit Thank You for All Your Support Finally, I would like to acknowledge and express my gratitude to our officer’s this past Fraternal Year.

They were active in the council, involved in our events, and participated in many of our service programs. We had really great attendance at our officer and business meetings, too. I also want to extend gratitude all of our Brother Knights and the Ladies Auxiliary for their help at all of our events this past year. THANK YOU!

Treasurer’s Report

Treasurer Rick Deyhle reported a general checking account balance of $17,292 and an Ultrasound checking account balance of $23,881 for total assets of $41,294. He stated liabilities of $28,787, which includes the Ultrasound liability of $23,881. This leaves a net balance of $12,507. He also read a number of vouchers for presentation to the Trustees for payment. A motion was made, seconded and voted on by the members. The members passed the motion unanimously and the bills were presented to the Trustees for their review and approval. Financial Secretary’s Report As a reminder to the council, Financial Secretary Jack Landers relayed that Section 139 of Supreme’s rules and regulations say that the financial secretary collects and receives all money due to the council. This includes all funds obtained from any source, or obtained by or to any person(s) acting for or in the name of the council in its direction or authority, including all money from any formal athletic activity carried on by the council or with its authority. Jack completes a receipt and then turns the money over to the Treasurer, Rick Deyhle. For all expense vouchers, Jack needs the actual invoice. Jack fills out a receipt, which goes to the Treasurer. Please do not turn in money and invoices to the Treasurer. Contact Jack Landers to pay your dues and get your vouchers processed. Jack’s contact information is [email protected] or (847) 508-0609.

Deputy Grand Knight’s Report

ID Drive Bernie Bojarski reminds everyone that this year’s ID Drive will be held on September 19 and 20.

Please mark those dates on your calendar. It is now 14 weeks away, so it is time to get the ball rolling. Permits have already been sent out. It is also time to start getting our teams together.

Co-chairs of this year’s drive are Bernie Bojarski, John Breit and Rick Deyhle, Jr. The co-chair’s coordinate, plan and participate in the drive. Beyond the co-chairs we need many, many volunteers to help out with this drive. First, we need volunteers that are responsible for a particular street corner or store. These volunteers are known as Corner and Store Captains. If you can help out as a Corner or Store Captain, please

Page 7: Knightly Newsuknight.org/Councils/2014 06 Knightly News(1).pdf · We have a total of 3 84 members, 1 60 insurance members, 1 3 honorary, and 8 5 honorary life members. Jim also read

contact any of the co-chairs in the next several weeks. We always have some turnover each year, so we do help your help. And, let’s all pray for good weather, lots of volunteer help and generous donors.

Eucharistic Adoration At the business meeting Bill Nicholson asked for volunteers to be part of the Eucharistic Adoration on

the evening of July 4th and morning of July 5th. However, due to the holiday and lack of volunteers, it has been canceled.

Right-to-Life Tom Mullen reported that flowers were sold at both St. Theresa and St. Thomas on Mother’s Day to

raise money for the Women’s Center. St, Theresa collected about $2,400 and St. Thomas collected roughly $1,300. Thank you to everyone that supported this fund-raiser!

On July 17th there will be a pro-life sign rally at the corners of Dundee and Rand Roads in Palatine, and at the corner of Palatine and Arlington Heights Road in Arlington Heights. Pro-life rally supporters line up on all four corners of these intersections and display graphic signs in support of life and against abortion. If you would like more information about the rally or to participate, please contact Tom Mullen.

Kairos Prison Ministry Joe Raducka talked about Pentecost Sunday and how we celebrated the Holy Spirit. He also gave an

example of how the Holy Spirit works. From the gospel of Matthew 25: 31-46 there is the passage, “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.” Jesus also said, “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for these least brothers of mine, you did for me.”

After reading that you have to ask, “Why would I visit someone in prison?” Well, maybe you don’t know why. On Divine Mercy Sunday the same thing was brought up about visiting someone in prison.

The Knights of Columbus were given a rosary when they took their 1st degree. Since Joe joined the Knights, he now prays the rosary often. So pray the rosary often, pray for those in prison, and let the Holy Spirit guide you.

Joe Raducka reminds us that the next prison ministry weekend will be held from October 16th to 19th. Joe will be the leader in October, so please consider being part of this worthy ministry. Contact Joe Raducka or Bruce Alesi to get more information or to join.

Retreats Charlie Foos reported that the Bellarmine Retreat House has started a new initiative for retreats. In

the fall the retreats start in September and last through December. In addition to their popular 3 day retreat, they now will have 4 day retreats. They are also increasing husband and wife retreats, and women only retreats. If you are unsure of going on a silent retreat, please visit Bellarmine, and simply walk around the grounds to get an idea of what it is like. You may find more information and a calendar of retreats by visiting their website at http://bellarminehall.org.

Remember, you cannot advance spiritually until you retreat. Please contact Jim Hoffman or Lou Akins for more information on retreats.

Ultrasound Initiative Trustee, Deacon John Breit, provided an update on the ultrasound. The initiative is almost wrapped up.

The machine was delivered around the end of May. Technicians were trained in early June and the machine is

Page 8: Knightly Newsuknight.org/Councils/2014 06 Knightly News(1).pdf · We have a total of 3 84 members, 1 60 insurance members, 1 3 honorary, and 8 5 honorary life members. Jim also read

now operational. They are so excited as they can now hear heartbeats and see 3-dimensional images of the babies in the womb. Once again, thanks to everyone for their support of this initiative.

There will be a dedication and blessing of the machine on Wednesday, June 25th around noontime. We are asking for an honor guard at the dedication and are hopeful of a large turnout at this event. More information on the dedication will be sent out soon.

Also, Aid for Women requested a need for an examination table to go along with the machine. Right-to-Life has stepped forward and has agreed to provide most of the $600 for an examination table. Thank you, so much to our Right-to-Life group for providing this support!

One final note about the elections, the Office of Council Chaplain is appointed by the incoming Grand

Knight.

Chaplain’s Report Assistant Chaplain, John Breit, talked about how strong our faith is, and do we really demonstrate it, speak about it, talk about it and evangelized about it. CBS Sunday morning has a lot of uplifting stories that make you feel good. There was a story about Minnie Driver, an actress, who has had some success. She was in Good Will Hunting and many other movies. One project she did was an independent film. It was a story about a lady who was going to have a baby. She went in at the 8th month to have her normal monthly checkup and the doctor could not find a heartbeat. After trying again he found the same thing, and ultimately he had to let her know that her baby was dead. They then delivered the baby, held it a while and said goodbye.

As for the film, they had to then stop making the production and being an independent film their money had run out. They decided to finish the film by going out and asking for donations. Through www.kickstart.org, they tried to raise money to finish the story. As it turned out, 700 couples with stillborn babies donated enough money to have the story told. They thought it was important enough for them to put up their hard earned money and to relive their own memories of having a stillborn baby. They also must have thought how important it was to tell the world about it and our children.

This is like the story of the Knights of Columbus, and God, and how he gives us blessings every day. Let’s be thankful for all we have. Let’s think about all that God has given us. God bless.

Page 11: Knightly Newsuknight.org/Councils/2014 06 Knightly News(1).pdf · We have a total of 3 84 members, 1 60 insurance members, 1 3 honorary, and 8 5 honorary life members. Jim also read

Field Agent’s Report Field Agent, Dave Peterson, talked about how it costs $5,000 a room at the Father Michael J.

McGivney Center of Hope and Healing. They have not filled it up this year and have 5 rooms still available. Some councils are taking on the job of donating $5,000 or working towards that total. With Holy Family’s golf outing the funds they raise will go towards one of those rooms.

For the 4th Degree coming up in Lisle, it was announced that Carl Anderson will be there along with many of the home office people. They are using this special opportunity to do a training film to be used throughout the United States. There will be a change in the insurance program starting sometime in August. The Knights long-term care insurance with lifetime benefits will no longer be offered after that date. Currently, the Knights are the only company that sells long-term care insurance with lifetime benefits. The Knights have also never raised their rates in long-term care. Today many companies have dropped out of the long-term care business because it is not profitable. People are living longer plus studies show that every 2 out of 3 individuals will need long-term care sometime in their lifetime. Those trends are making it difficult for companies to continue being in this business.

So if you are thinking about purchasing long-term care, please see Dave as soon as possible. You can still get lifetime benefits through the Knights long-term care insurance if you purchase it prior to August. Field agents are meeting in Omaha in July where this important change will be announced. Contact Dave to get more information [email protected] or (847)691-1625. District Deputy Report

There was no report this month. Former Supreme Secretary

Grand Knight Larry Ruff read a recent email he received concerning Former Supreme Secretary, Charlie Foos. The email was the result of a request by Larry to hold a 1st degree exemplification only if the council could provide a 2nd candidate for membership. The email originated from PGK Angelo Polvere and is presented in its entirety as follows:

Hello Larry, As I recall, the last and only time that we held a 1st degree initiation for only one candidate was decades ago when a young fellow from Palatine wanted to join the Council and we, too, were anxious to admit him. I, too, was a young fellow, and I was on the degree team in the days when pomp and ceremony was somewhat more pretentious and preparation included regalia, rehearsals and symbolism. The ceremony went extremely well until the point in time when the ritual called for us to assemble the candidates into an arc representing an anchor. It was only at that moment that we realized we needed to instruct the candidate to form an arc, the geometry which did not lend itself to adaptation by a single person. Needless to say, we did not lay the candidate on the floor and bend him into that shape. I don't recall how we solved the problem, but we did so quite seamlessly to the extent that the candidate was nevertheless very impressed by the ceremony and until the next degree he witnessed, he thought all candidates went through the same one-person initiation. The Degree Team leader who also was a member of a theatrical company in the Village ad-libbed us through

Page 12: Knightly Newsuknight.org/Councils/2014 06 Knightly News(1).pdf · We have a total of 3 84 members, 1 60 insurance members, 1 3 honorary, and 8 5 honorary life members. Jim also read

the ordeal beautifully. That Team Leader was Herb Gegenhuber (of beloved memory), who would later become Grand Knight and even later Illinois State Deputy. We, who were involved, have had a lot of fun recounting the whole affair for years afterwards... and even to this day enjoy telling it. As for the young candidate... he would later became a degree team member for all four degrees, a Grand Knight, a District Deputy and a State Deputy.... and he is still an active and faithful member of our Order and Holy Ghost Council. I'm talking, of course, about the one and the only, Past Supreme Secretary, Charlie Foos. Fraternally, Angelo Polvere Food Pantry Financial Secretary Jack Landers reported that we collected $118 for the St. Thomas Food Pantry and $96 for the Little Sisters of the Poor at the business meeting. Trustee’s Report Trustee John Breit reported that the Trustees reviewed the vouchers, approved and signed them, and forwarded them on to the Treasurer for payment. Prayer Intensions

Please remember to keep the following in your prayer: Francis Cardinal George, Robert Marvin, Sr., father of Brother Robert Marvin, Melissa Schumacher,

Ron Sowizrol, Bob Heimlich, Larry Foos, Master Paul Isherwood, Ed Tholl, and the unborn children.
