He recently worked with his Grandpa selling Queen of Hearts tickets and issuing PIN numbers.
He served our country in the Navy for 4 years as a jet engine technician.
He attended a Cursillo week-end and is a dedicated father and a very devout Catholic.
It is with great appreciation that we honor as the Knight of the Month for July, 2018, our brother Knight, Kent Manning

Do you have a GPS ... a God Positioning System?
If not, maybe you should invest and let God lead you on your jour-ney of faith, your path to eternity. Let Him be your nav iga to r. Let Him map out your lives.
He leaves pretty clear direc-tions if your hearts and minds, ears and eyes are open to re-ceive them. When you make a wrong turn,
God will recalculate your GPS route to get you back on track.
He wants to make sure you are going in the right direction and that you reach your final destination: life with Him for all eternity.
Sometimes the devil will put detours and obstacles in your way so it may take longer to get to where you’re going, but God can get you through these obstacles and past these detours.
He will get you back on the right road if you seek His guid-ance and follow His directions.
If you would like to help serve/sell food at the Knights Queen of Hearts raffles on Thursdays, contact President KathyKlostermann @ 604-0348 to sign up. All help is appreciated!

Silver Rose Coming To Springfield
DioceseThe Silver Rose is scheduled to pass through the Springfield Diocese September 7 - 13 this year.
It is a special opportunity to gather the community together and pray through the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Knights of Columbus Councils are being sought to be a host to the Silver Rose and conduct a prayer service in their parish during this time.
Other councils are being sought for services as well.
The Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose has been a Knights of Columbus tradition for more than 50 years.
In 1960, groups of Columbian Squires in Mexico, Canada and the United States decided to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe by carrying a rose across North America from Canada to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey, Mexico.

Grand Knight
This is m y f i r s t G r a n d K n i g h t ’s M e s s a g e and even though I have only been on the job for about a month I have learned a lot. Many have asked me if I have any big plans? I do. Here are the three things I think about the most.
I was reviewing some in-surance documents I found out there was 194 KC events scheduled for 2017!
These included 50 Bingos, 12 Officer Meetings, 12 Coun-cil Meetings, 8 Fish Fries, 1 Bishop’s Dinner, 3 days at the Schweizerfest, 5 days at the Madison County Fair, and 4 days at the Kirchenfest plus many more.
All those events will likely take place in 2018 with the addition of 50 Queen of Hearts drawings, bringing the total to 244!
If you include the planning meetings and set up work re-quired to support all those events it turns out that there is something going on almost every day.
That’s a good thing. It’s a sign of a vibrant coun-
cil. If you walk into the KC Hall on a Thursday evening before the Queen of Hearts drawing you can feel the buzz in the air and the roar of a crowd that’s happy to be there. I’m proud to be a part of it.
The down side is all those events takes a lot of workers. I’ve notice many of our mem-bers don’t sign up to work but they usually show up to work.
Things usually do work out, but if you’re a team leader who needs a crew of ten and only three have signed up it can cause some stress.
The first thing I would like to improve on is finding a better way to engage with our membership and get a firm com-mitment from them on working
an event. Now let’s talk about money.
Many of our events are fund raising events.
If our events are more suc-cessful, then we have more money to support organizations and causes consistent with our Catholic faith.
More money for pro-life organizations.
More money for Catholic schools.
More money for seminar-ians.
More money to assist people with intellectual disabilities. More money for our parish.
The second thing I would like to improve upon is getting our membership, our parish and the Highland Community to better support our fundraisers. We should be serving twice as many fish dinners during Lent and have twice as many Bingo players as we currently do. Let’s figure out why and fix it.
I became a Catholic in 1977 but dodged becoming a knight until 23 years later. I think there are a lot of men in our parish in the same boat. For 15 years after becoming a knight I did little more than pay my dues.
Then I figured out that the guys I liked, the guys I trusted, the guys who were good to their families, the guys I could count on, and the guys who took their Catholic faith seriously were all knights. That’s why I got more involved and that’s why I became an officer.
The third thing I would like to improve upon is building our membership by helping the men of our parish find a mission within the Knights of Columbus where their talents can be used to serve their council, their par-ish and their families.
The Knight’s of Columbus have never asked me to do something I couldn’t do.
Many of the things I have done with the Knights I could have never done on my own. Being a knight is rewarding and because of the Knights of Columbus I have more friends now than I have ever had.
I am honored to be the Grand Knight. I will do the best I can. With your help and support Council 1580 will experience more participation from our members, additional revenue from our fund raisers, an in-crease in our membership and a sense of purpose in our personal mission.
The First Three Things
Knights of Columbus National Softball TournamentAre you a member of the
Knights of Columbus? Are you or someone you
know interested in playing Men’s Slow Pitch Softball?
If the answer to either of these questions is “yes”, then we’d like you to know that the National Knights of Columbus Men’s Slow Pitch Softball Tour-nament is being held this year in Highland over Labor Day weekend Sept. 1-2.
If you are a member, you
may want to participate in some way – either as a player or giving our committee a hand.
If you are not a member, but are interested in playing – there are several oppor-tunities between now and September for you to join.
All volunteers are welcome or stop by and watch a game. A mass in the grass by the KC pavilion will be held at 4 p.m., Sat, Sept. 1.
Contact Pete Feldman at (618) 654-3715 for more details or call the KC Hall at 618-654-9049 for details to join the Knights.
Fellow Sir Knights, Greet-ings, I know that our Golf Tournament is fast approaching.
I a m s p o n s o r-ing a hole myself for $25 and challenge a l l s i r K n i g h t s to do the same.
This is our biggest fund raiser for the year. Let’s all get together have the best tourney we have ever had.
I hope everyone has a great time, May God Bless you and your Family.

I just can’t believe how fast time keeps moving on ... It’s August, already!
I’ve had the honor of being the president of the Columbus club for over a year and a half, and there are a lot of things I have learned. One thing I’ve learned is that this is truly a great organization! Help always seems to show up when you least expect it. That leads me to another topic.
I’m pretty sure that the most important principle of the Knights of Columbus is charity. And I believe everyone would agree with me. With that being said, an important part of charity is volunteering. We are always looking for volunteers to help with our many fund-raising projects. I hope everyone will keep that in mind when the phone calls start coming when we’re looking for help to fill shifts. I’m pretty sure the Grand Knight will have more informa-tion on the upcoming events in the near future. Thank you in advance for at least considering helping with these events.
If you have an opportunity, please take a drive back to the ballfields and look at all the work that’s been done out there. The drainage project has gone very well, and a big thank you goes out to Michael Trobaugh. He is the contractor who helped lay out the project with the assistance of a couple of mem-bers. I have to say, he has done a great job with the project. Please keep him in mind if you have any excavating projects coming up. I think you will be very pleased with his work.
There are a couple more projects we are going to try to get done by the end of August, before the national softball tour-nament, which we are hosting this year. This is where the vol-unteering part comes in. I may need some help for one of these projects. So if the phone rings, ignore the caller ID, and just listen to the person on the other end he may just be asking for a little help or just wanting to see
how you’re doing.
O n e quick com-ment about the Queen of Hearts.
This was an idea that was brought before our council by several members as a possible fundraiser And it seems to be working out very very well. This goes back to something I said in an earlier ar-ticle, “if you have any ideas for improvements or fundraisers please bring them forward,no idea is a bad idea”
May our founder, Fr. Michael J McGivney, by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ look out over each and everyone of us.
