We are entering the season when we have to be prepared for weather related school closings and early dismissals. The Fort Zumwalt School Distr ict utilizes a number of methods to communicate weather related school closings and early dismissals.  Local news media are informed when school is canceled due to the weather and you can often find weather related cancellations on local news channels. Additionally, the Distr ict uses School Messenger to call and inform families when school is canceled.  Please make sure we have updated phone numbers so you can receive these calls.  We will also tweet out school closings and early dismissals due to the weather.  Follow @FZSchools or @zumdardenne on Twitter or like Fort Zumwalt School Distr ict on Facebook.

The Leader in Me League is returning. The Leader in Me League is a select group of West High School students who will visit our students during lunch once a month starting in January.  The WHS students will share a trading card with  their name and a healthy habit they try to live by.  This positive partnership with West High School is one our students have truly enjoyed the last two years.  The first half of this school year has been filled with many amazing accomplishments and events.  We look forward to continuing to serve your child.  Please take a look at this edition of the Knight News for important news and information.

Choosing Books With Your Child

5. Use appropriate tools strategically.

Students approach problems in different ways and should be encouraged to make sense of a problem in a way that works for them. Sometimes this can involve choosing a tool for solving.  These tools can be calculators, clocks, rulers, protractors, graphs, place value blocks, drawings, and more.  Some tools can get you to the right answer, but are long and tedious.  Once students have filled their ?toolbox? with tools to solve problems, the next step is to decide which one(s) is the most efficient.  Below there are a few questions parents can ask to help develop this skill at home.

Questions parents can ask their child to help develop this skill:

- What tools could you use to solve this problem? How can each one help you?- Which tool is more useful for this problem? Explain your choice.- Why is this tool (the one selected) better to use than (another tool mentioned)?- Before you solve the problem, can you estimate the answer?

Sincerely,

Ms. Hawkins (Math coach)

You may notice your child choosing books that seem too easy or too hard to read. Honoring the types of books children want to read fosters their interest in a variety of books and genres. However, finding a balance of easy, challenging, and ?just right? texts will help your child grow as a reader. As adults, we read a variety of texts for different purposes. Your favorite magazine may be an enjoyable read that doesn?t require too much brain power. When we are reading to learn something new, it usually takes more concentration, and we may be highlighting and taking notes. Modeling the different purposes for reading will help children see that challenging texts may take longer to read, but we learn new words and concepts. Easy texts are quick reads, and it?s a great way to relax. ?Just right" books on a child?s reading level are great for practicing fluency. Teachers use Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) to find each child?s reading level. If you would like to know your child?s DRA level, please reach out to the classroom teacher. You can use Scholastic?s book wizard http:/ /www.scholastic.com/bookwizard/ to find books on your child?s DRA level.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Henderson (ELA coach)
