KNIGHT OF THE MONTH Dan Valentini has been a member for three years

now. He is close friends with last month’s Knight of the Month, Chris Hudson, and they are often seen together volunteering at nearly every event we hold.

Dan is one of those guys who is “all in” when needed, never at a half measure. He never hesitates to look for the opportunity to lend a hand or to give kind support to another member. He is one of the gentlemen who visits our mansion on a regular basis and can always be found laughing, enjoying the company of his fellow Knights.

He is truly one of many people at EDW who help us be the special council that we strive for.

In honor of Dan’s service a donation will be made to Holy Transfiguration Melkite Greek Catholic Church.

FAMILY OF THE MONTH The Neal Lawson Family

In February of 2014 there was a horrific traffic accident in front of Not-tingham Elementary. Jennifer Bush Lawson died while loading one of her children in her vehicle. Quite honestly the tragedy could easily have involved any one of the Nottingham mothers or fathers. Inadequate off-street parking, a too narrow of a street and a commercial truck contributed to the incident.

If this had happened to my family I don’t know how I would be able to handle it. I would most likely cocoon my family away in sorrow and self-pity. However, Neal in time has done just the opposite. He has shown his children and his neighbors how to honor and respect a life well worth remembering.

All three of the Lawson’s children had difficult births; thankfully they had quality health insurance to aid them. Knowing that not all families in our area have that safety net Neal created the Jennifer Bush-Lawson Foundation to honor her memory with a mission Jennifer cared deeply about. The Jennifer Bush-Lawson Foundation (JB-LF) aims to provide high quality prenatal and postnatal care to the economically vulnerable in Arlington County.

Neal approached EDW to partner in their first major fundraiser. We happily signed on as host and platinum partner! Please join us in supporting the Jennifer Bush-Lawson Foundation Memorial 5K and Family Fun Day on Saturday, November 21st on the grounds of the Knights of Columbus.

The race will be followed by a kids’ fun run and family activities including: music, food trucks, a beer truck, photo booth, face painting, moon bounce, and much more.

I want to invite and encourage you to please sign up to volunteer or run in the race. Take a look at the full page flyer on page 5 to find out how.

I’ll see you there!John WhiteGrand Knight

In a field that negotiates a fine line between euthanasia and prolonged artificial life support, the comfort care professionals cherish life, whether it lasts three minutes or three months.

The first case the neonatologist, Elvira Parravicini, took on were those of two women expecting children with Trisomy 18 and, strikingly, “they wanted to continue their pregnancy to be able to hold their babies. So then I said, ‘I can counsel these mothers; I’ll follow them. When the children are born, we’ll provide them with comfort care.’ But I didn’t even know well what I was saying.” The neonatologist only knew she wanted “the life of those two children to be wonderful, and for those women to have a chance to be mothers to the very end.” This was in 2006. From that day, obstetricians and secretaries began sending her all the mothers who decided to keep their babies, those in doubt, and those who could not abort because the diagnosis came after the 23rd week. Dr. Elvira Parravicini’s hospice was born between the lines and operates this way. It is not a ward, exactly. Neonatal Comfort Care is a special medical/nursing treatment that happens in the delivery room, in the post-partum, in the NICU, prepared when and as it is needed. It is a fascinating development “for all of us, also for the nurses, because it requires everyone to engage humanly,” says Elvira. “Techniques are not enough.” Comfort care for newborns does not have a model; it is not theorized about and she did not study it in books. Asked where she learned it, she smiles and says, “From my mother.”

Elvira’s team also evolved along the way. “Currently our team includes a clinical care coordinator and a social worker dedicated to this program. Moreover, other professionals, such as psychologists, child life specialists, feeding specialists, and chaplaincy collabo-rate in our multidisciplinary team. Obviously we work together with physicians and nurses from OB and NICU. In 2006 I started alone, then, one by one, almost all of these sought me out first, asking to work with me.” The strongest reason for this commit-ted interest, and least articulated, are those beautiful inexplicable moments, even amidst such suffering, of welcoming and loving a new one into the world. “I continue to do what I do because I can’t remember one case out of hundreds in which the mother and father were not grateful, glad in the midst of their tears. They tell me, ‘You helped us to be parents.’ And these people are very diverse; this is rarely a ‘moral’ or ‘religious’ choice. Instead, it is the response to a desire written in the heart.”

Elvira’s myriad experiences include caring for newborns in comfort care who did not die, in contrast to the prognosis — Ale-jandra, one such child, just celebrated her 7th birthday. Since most

situations are not black and white, she says, “For me, it’s always very dramatic. It engages my freedom — mine and that of the parent.” She offers everything she has to each unique child, while they are present, as when she baptized a pair of identical Siamese twins before they died. They were there on the bed, embracing each other, when the 15-year-old parents agreed they would like them baptized. Dr. Parravicini began to make the sign of the cross on the first: “I baptize you Keela...” The boy-father suddenly grasped her arm: “No! She’s Kayla....” In his distinction of one identical twin from the other just minutes after they were born, Elvira asserts, “The gaze of that father on his daughters was like that of God. Only He loves us this way. One by one.”

HONOR FLIGHT September 29th marked a special evening for our

Honor Flight program and for the council. At our in-vitation the 28th Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. P. X. Kelley was present to visit with the World War II and Korea veterans from Boston. Gen Kelley, in his post-military career, was chairman of the American Battle Monuments Commission. During his tenure as chairman he was responsible for building both the World War II Memorial and the Korea War Memorial. Kel-ley while visiting with the veterans at their tables and speaking to the full audience spoke of his time leading the commission and of his gratitude to the Knights of Columbus as the first recipient of the Knight’s Mat-thews and Swift Educational Trust Scholarship which is presented to the children of military personnel killed or permanently injured in the line of duty.

Once again, the Old Council Home will be transformed into the house on haunted hill. You only have a few days left to find a costume that may win you a fabulous prize in the Costume contest. Shakedown is back to provide great music and there will be lots of weird and wonderful food. Cash Bar, costume contest, live band, yummy food, and great friends – what’s not to like? This fun Adults Only party starts at 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 31. So grab a babysitter and come on by. This is an event you really don’t want to miss. If you are around the night before and want to help decorate – please come on up to the Old Council Home anytime after 6:30 to lend a hand.

Save the Date! LUK is having their annual Christmas Tree Decorating event on Saturday, November 28 beginning at 6:30 p.m. As always, we are having a “pot luck” get together to kick off the Christmas season. Please bring a Christmas ornament to spruce up the tree and snacks to share. If anyone is looking to downsize your old decorations and is trying to find a new home for them, please drop off any decorations in good condition and we will try to make your old decorations look elegant in the Old Council Home.

It is already time to prepare for the annual Thanksgiving din-ner to benefit the less fortunate citizens located in the Arlington community and the surrounding areas. We are looking for volunteers to donate cooked turkeys for this very worthwhile venture. If you would like to help, please drop off a cooked (unstuffed) twenty-pound turkey from November 23 – 25. For more information, please contact Thom and Marijo Galvin at [email protected].

LUK is having its annual Christmas party meeting on Thursday, December 3. All LUK members (past and present), friends of LUK, and potential new members are welcome to attend. Everyone who wants to participate in the Christmas gift exchange is asked to bring a wrapped gift worth $20. This is a great meeting for potential members to attend.

It is customary for LUK to wish their members a happy birthday in the monthly Knight Life article. We have no mem-bers with birthdays in November. Therefore, we are soliciting members with birthdays in November, as well as any other month. If you are interested in helping out with these fun events or coming by to meet new friends, please join us. We meet at 7:30 on the first Thursday of each month at the K of C Old Council Home. Autumn Golf in the Shenandoah Valley: New Market, VA—technically it wasn’t fall, but it was close enough and you still had to wear a wind shirt or sweater for the first part of the morning. Winning teams in the following order were Bob Brever, Dick Ryan and Bob Hughes, -3; Dick Higdon, Danny Mansay, John Stockman and John Curtis, -2; Jack Sinclair, Lou Lane, Tony Gallucio and Jack Creamer, +1. Lowest gross included Jack Sinclair, 76; Dick Ryan, 84; John Stockman; 83, and John Curtis, 102. And no, those are not their ages! Lowest net included Dick Higdon 74, Dick Ryan, 67, John Stockman, 63, and John Curtis, 77. Closest to the pin on September 9th included John Curtis (Miller Course #3—it’s Miller Time!), Dick Ryan (Creek Course #2) and Jack Sinclair (Creek Course #7). Closest to the pin on September 10th included Dick Ryan (Creek Course #2), Lou Lane (Creek Course #4) and Lou Lane (Creek Course #7).

On the dailies closest to the pin at Herndon Centennial was Danny Mansay and at The Gauntlet was Joe Capello. Winners for the K of C in the American Legion Stapleford Competition were Jack Sinclair in A flight and Bud Daily in B flight. Closest to the pin at Reston was Lou Lane.

In Memoriam: Unfortunately we lost three valuable and ex-ceptional brothers this year. Russ Martin, Ed Watkins and Tom Wilson passed on. Let’s remember them and golf brothers from prior years in our prayers. They blessed us with great memories on many courses.

Whether you’re a seasoned golfer, a neophyte or someone in between, it doesn’t matter. Golfers in the EDW Golf Group run the gamut.

The EDW Golf Group joined several years ago with the American Legion and Elks to form the Northern VA Golf Association. This allowed the larger group to leverage both rates and better courses that include, among others, South Riding, Reston National, The Gauntlet, Quantico Medal of Honor, Virginia Oaks, Penderbrook, Goose Creek, Pleasant Valley, Prince William, Osprey Landing, Old Hickory and West Park. There are two out-of-town trips still available for this year: our Aug. 11-13 trip to Carroll Valley, fairly close to Emmitsburg, MD, is still open until June 8. If availability closes, you can go on stand-by, should someone not be able to make it. The final trip is to Shenvalee is Sept 8-10, and the cut-off for sign-up is Aug. 15. Shenvalee is located in New Market about 97 miles from EDW.

Our daily June, 9am tee times, are: June 1 at Forest Glen, June 15 at South Riding and June 24 at Goose Creek.

Come enjoy yourself and the camaraderie of your fellow Knights in a relaxed atmosphere, pleasant surroundings, and to do so economically. In November we have a banquet where we present awards, make announcements and share stories, some of which are true.

Annual dues are $30. If you have any questions or need more information, feel free to call Larry O’Brien at 703-978-5651 (evenings and weekends) or email him at [email protected]

OUTSTANDING DISTRICT DEPUTY 2014 – 2015

Congratulations to our very own Bob Dannemiller for being awarded the Virginia Outstanding District Deputy for the past year by the Immediate Past State Deputy, Steve Burnley.

Virginia has 30 Districts each with deputies hand selected by the State Deputy. The District Deputies, to be chosen have had to prove themselves to be top per-formers at their councils, in their districts and parishes.

Bob Dannemiller with Gen. P. X. Kelley, Honor Flight Dinner.

LONG-TERM CARE PLANS OFFER PEACE OF MIND

Since its addition to the Order’s product portfolio in 2000, long-term care (LTC) insurance has provided the Knights of Columbus with an excellent opportunity to further serve members and their families. And, for our long-term care policy holders in the United States, there’s an added bonus.

It’s called “Provider Pathway,” a program offering access to a network of long-term care providers at discounted rates. The network includes discounts on products, such as hearing aids, diabetic supplies, personal emergency response systems, and durable medical equipment,

as well as skilled nursing facilities, assisted living, and adult day care. Eligibility for participation in this program is open to Knights of

Columbus long-term care insurance policyholders, their spouses, de-pendent children, parents and parents-in-law. All providers are fully credentialed and meet state licensing requirements.

If you haven’t yet spoken with us about long-term care insurance, you owe it to yourself to do so. There are a few decisions to make in choosing a “plan” — a comprehensive plan that covers care whether you’re at home or in a facility, or one that covers facility only; daily benefit amounts and benefit durations (how much and how long it will last); and the length of the elimination period (waiting period) before benefits kick-in.

Having a professionally trained agent ― and a brother Knight you can trust ― to help guide you through the process is yet another valu-able benefit that comes with your membership. Take advantage of it; contact us today.
