Offering speed and versatility onsite, Knauf Slimgrid is a fully warranted, fire tested and approved ceiling solution.

Setting OutKnauf recommend setting your Slimgrid system out from the centre point of the ceiling to be covered and the first main runner should be no more than 600mm from the wall. The first hanger should be no more than 450mm from the perimeter.

Perimeter Channel 41 x 30 x 19mm galvanized steel section should be fixed to all sides of the wall at the desired height of the system, at maximum 450mm centres and 50mm from the ends of channels with suitable fixings for the substrate.

Hangers Knauf Soffit Cleats should be fixed to the substrate at the required centres for the main runners normally 1200mm. Lengths of 25 x 25mm galvanized Knauf Angle Section should be cut to the length required and a 6mm hole drilled in one side of the 25mm flange in line with the hole in the downturn cleat, and should be secured using a Knauf nut and bolt.

Main Runners Knauf Slimgrid main runners (38 x 40mm) should be spaced at 1200mm centres or less. These should be fitted into the Perimeter Channel and secured with one Knauf 14mm wafer head screw. The 25 x 25mm section should be fixed to the main runner at the desired height by using two Knauf 14mm Wafer head screws.

Cross Tees 1200mm cross tees (38 x 40mm) should be inserted perpendicular between the main runners at either 450mm or 600mm centres, dependent on the specified board size and loading. On insertion an audible click will be heard to show it is located correctly. Cut ends should be secured into the perimeter channel with one Knauf 14mm wafer head screw.

Boarding Out The boards should be secured to the Knauf Slimgrid with the specified screws and fixing pattern.

Accessory Selection Knauf Slimgrid has two accessory clips; a transition clip and a splice clip. The splice clips can be used to joint cut main tees, either curved or straight or to join to grid tees that are intersecting off module. The transition clip securely joins two tier grid components regardless of face width at 90°. The transition clip has a slotted bend to facilitate connecting grid members that are not in line.

Variation Tolerance of Boards Knauf specified boards can be supplied up to 6mm under the specified length as set out in EN 520 and still remain in tolerance. The Knauf Slimgrid System is made using much stricter tolerances, which may cause an unlikely mismatch to occur. In this instance, simply cut the board back to the centre of the previous cross tee.

Designed to offer speed, security and ease of installation, Knauf Slimgrid components simply click together. Knauf Slimgrid is a concealed grid system for fixing Knauf specified boards.

The system comprises of hot dipped galvanized ‘T’ sections with knurled hot dipped steel capping for easier screw attachment. The 40mm table width is designed to suit variable module sizes, most typically 1800 x 900mm and 2400 x 1200mm.

Innovative in its application, Knauf Slimgrid is the time saving solution for contractors. Containing precise measurements, the main runners and pre-punched cross tee holes make planning quick and hassle free. With only one level required when setting out, each component can be connected together quickly to create an accurately spaced grid installation, reducing labour time by approximately 30%.

Knauf Slimgrid can accommodate a double skin board finish, supporting a load of up to 19.85kgm² under normal grid configuration. No overlaps or labour intensive need to secure with screws and bolts is required.

Tested in accordance with BS 476: part 23 with Knauf plasterboard, Knauf Slimgrid is designed for fire rates ceiling assemblies, providing fire protection for up to 1 hour. Lightweight, Knauf Slimgrid is straightforward to store and transport. When required, Knauf Slimgrid is effortless to cut and versatile for use to create a variety of features and shapes.

The low-void ceiling grid system is ideal for refurbishments and repeatable small sized ceilings. Transitions from plasterboard to acoustical ceilings are more easily achieved using Knauf Slimgrid, in comparison to traditional installation methods.

Case StudyContractors using the versatile Slimgrid ceiling system from Knauf on the refurbishment of Westminster House in Manchester were staggered with the 30% reduction in time and labour costs.

Knauf Slimgrid

The Slimgrid system makes adjusting and removing ceiling structures easy without the use of specialist tools.

Sub-contractor, interior fit-out specialist Met-Excel, specified the Knauf grid system in an effort to save on both time and labour costs and managed this thanks to the systems practical application benefits over traditional plasterboard ceiling systems.

Originally specified as a traditional MF ceiling system by the project architects, Met-Excel suggested Knauf Slimgrid knowing that it would save both time and money on site.

Sales Director at Met-Excel, Simon Hill, said the decision to change came down the Simgrid systems exceptional ease and speed of installation.

“We have used the Slimgrid system on several other large scale projects and believe this to be the most effective ceiling system on the market,” Simon said.

“Compared to traditional MF systems the Slimgrid system gives us a faster installation because of the simplicity in its design. The fact that it can also reduce contract program times also makes it an option the main contractors are prepared to look at.”

The Slimgrid system has been a major breakthrough in the suspended ceilings market, created to speed up the installation of plasterboard ceilings and reduce the void depth above. With its pre-indexed hole locations the system is fast and simple to install and proved so during the refurbishment of the Grade A office accommodation in Manchester.

This is the largest project in the last seven years for main contractor Styles & Wood, awarded the £17.7m revamp contract in 2015 by stakeholders Aviva Investors. The 160,000 sq ft restoration project, due for completion in November 2016, required a complete refurbishment of the ceilings which included the use of the Knauf suspended ceiling system.

Slimgrid from Knauf is ideally suited to large scale refurbishment jobs with smaller rooms such as hotels and office buildings. Suspended ceilings are still the most popular way to construct plasterboard ceilings and the Slimgrid system provides architects and contractors with the flexibility to create attractive, ridged ceiling designs.

Manufactured from galvanized steel, the grid system is capable of maintaining a ceiling load of 19.85/m2 under typical grid configuration. Pre-engineered cross tees and main tee join easily and lock in place to form a rigid, square and level structure to which plasterboard is easily attached.

With a significant increase in installation speed, around 30% over traditional ceiling systems, the Slimgrid system can greatly reduce the time and labour required on site, particularly where smaller rooms, corridors and short spans are prominent.

Coupled with the patented QUICK-RELEASE clip design, a simple push fit action; the Slimgrid system makes adjusting and removing ceiling structures easy without the use of specialist tools.
