Or has not being aligned with the business strategy or real needs of the business. It has thus largely failed to live up to its expectations.

ness our business knowledge holds a vast but largely untapped potential that could culminate in real tangible business outcomes such as increased revenue, re-duced cost, improved quality and faster time to market and could truly engage the workforce. But Knowledge Management, has tended to focus on idealistic solutions such as creating a knowledge sharing culture.

This need not be the case. Knowledge Management should be prag-matic and focus on real, tangible, busi-ness problems. You don’t “do KM” you respond to business problems and develop business opportuni-ties by adopting a KM mindset, KM tools, techniques. Paradoxically, in taking this approach, over time, aspirational goals such as a learning or innovative culture or a more engaged workforce naturally emerge.

t is a hard fact of life that most KM projects fail and many do not live up to their expectations.

This is not inherent in KM but more due to the fact that KM projects are frequently simply poorly conceived and implemented.

The Gurteen KM Framework (GKMF) is a “thinking frame-work” which once understood and applied helps you successfully manage your KM projects.

KM Business Framework

The GKMF is designed to help your organization to:• Focus on the fundamental business issues • Focus on KM projects to deliver business outcomes• Get buy-in and engagement from people in your organization.

The Framework consists of a set of “imperatives” - aspects of a KM project - that you should consider be-fore, during and after the life of your KM “initiative”.

i-CafePowerful Tool

Where Innovation BeginsThe Innovation Café (iCafe) is one of the more powerful KM tools at your disposal.

Its purpose is to identify business issues - business problems, op-portunities and risks faced by the organization and to act on those issues.

In other words: to innovate. The function of the iCafe is to not only make more explicit those business issues that are already known but to surface or reveal issues that people (even senior management)are simply not aware of.

Often issues caused by silo-working.The iCafe is focused on all business issues regardless of their nature - not just issues that are associated with a lack of communication, knowledge sharing and information management though increasingly these are the real issues facing by most organizations.

The prime purpose of the iCafe to identify business issues but it can also be adapted to help develop responses to business issues as a learning tool.
