ARTS/LIFESTYLE/ADVENTURE

THE ARTIST TOOLBOX: Join host John Jacobsen as he interviews some of America’s greatest artists, discussing how they make great art and great lives. In the premiere episode, listen to the gypsy strings of the dazzling David Garrett, whose violin can conquer the classical work of composers such as Bach and Chopin. Sit in on a private rehearsal with the virtuoso violinist, known in Britain as “the David Beck-ham of classical music.” Series begins airing Sunday, Jan. 9 at 9 pm

BURT WOLF: TRAVELS & TRADITIONS returns for an eleventh season with episodes shot on location in Switzerland, Ireland, and Taiwan. In his relaxed, person-able and irreverent style, Wolf provides an overview of the city or region, then introduces the people and the culture that give each area its unique character. 8-part series begins airing Monday, Jan. 3 at 7 pm

Emmy award-winning series INDEPENDENT LENS is like an independent film festival in your living room. Each episode introduces new documentaries and dramas made by independent thinkers: filmmakers who are taking creative risks, calling their own shots and finding untold stories in unexpected places. In the season opener, take a humorous and poignant look at a group of middle-aged men who have found unlikely success as members of Sweden’s all-male synchronized swimming team. What begins as a weekly escape from the daily grind of work and family responsibilities gradually evolves into a more seri-ous commitment. New season begins airing Tuesday, January 4 at 10 pm

ROGER EBERT PRESENTS “AT THE MOVIES”: Legendary film critic Roger Ebert revives his classic half-hour film review show AT THE MOVIES only on PBS. The lively program will be hosted by Christy Lemire, film critic of The Associated Press, and will feature Ebert’s copyrighted “Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down” movie rating device, which was removed from the syndicated program after Ebert left the show following a battle with cancer that left him unable to speak. 26-part series debuts Friday, Jan. 21 at 7:30 pm

MASTERPIECE CLASSIC- DOWNTON ABBEY: Downton Abbey--a sprawling, lavish Edwardian man-sion nestled in the Yorkshire landscape--needs an heir. After a tragedy at sea claims the life of the presumed heir, Lord Crawley is faced with the possibility that the house he’s loved his whole life might someday belong to a distant cousin he’s never met. But before that can happen he must deal with his scandalous daughter, Lady Mary - considered by many to be the rightful heir to Downton. 4-part series begins airing Friday, Jan. 21 at 9 pm

ANTIQUES ROADSHOW: SAN DIEGO: Take a trip to the world-renowned San Diego Zoo to find out the appeal of vintage Steiff animals, the plush-toy phe-nomenon started more than 130 years ago. Other highlights include an original, handwritten draft of the 1933 popular American song “Stormy Weather,” re-corded by the likes of Lena Horne, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald; an heirloom circa 1864 Tiffany cameo complete with a collection of authentic period jewelry; and a turn-of-the-century aristocratic portrait by Robert Henri, valued at $250,000 to $350,000. Airs Friday, January 28 at 8 pm

Airs Monday, Jan. 3 at 8 pm

MAMMOTH CAVE: A WAY TO WONDER reveals the untold stories of Mammoth Cave National Park; tales of exploration and discovery covering thousands of years of his-

ELSA’S LEGACY: THE BORN FREE STORY: 2010 marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of “Born Free” -- a book and then a film that forever changed the way we think about wildlife. What has hap-pened to lions since this story? And what has happened to the people featured in the film? What has “Born Free” taught us? Airs Monday, Jan. 17 at 10pm and Thursday, Jan. 13 at 8 pm

In 2010, epic earthquakes all over the planet delivered one of the worst annual death tolls ever recorded. The deadliest strike was in Haiti, where a quake just southwest of the capi-tal, Port-au-Prince, killed more than 200,000, reducing homes, hospitals, schools, and the presidential palace to rubble. In exclusive coverage, a NOVA camera crew follows a team of US geologists as they first enter Haiti in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy. It is a race against time as they hunt for crucial evidence that will help them determine exactly what happened deep underground and what the risks are of a new killer quake. Barely a month after the Haiti quake, Chile was struck by a quake 100 times more powerful, unleashing a tsunami that put the entire Pacific coast on high alert. In a coastal town dev-astated by the rushing wave, NOVA follows a team of geologists as they battle aftershocks to measure the displacement caused by the earthquake. Could their work, and the work of geologists at earthquake hot-spots around the U.S., one day lead to a breakthrough in predicting quakes before they happen? Airs Sunday, Jan. 16 at 7 pm and Monday, Jan. 17 at 9pm
