JULY 2019 KIHEI LUTHERAN CHURCH Pastor Joel Martyn
KLC ‘Ohana News
VBS Wrap UpROAR VBS 2019 has “kuja na kwenda”! (Swahilii language for “come and gone”). We had a fun week with approximately 22 keiki in attendance. Each day was filled with fun and fellowship as we experienced life in the African savannah. We also learned that even though life may be unfair, change, be scary, or sad…...God is good!
Many thanks go to the countless helpers behind the scenes and to those that donated supplies, snacks, and their time during VBS workdays. A big thanks to Keek & Mo Hottendorf for supplying the water day lunch supplies as well as artistic expertise on our tree trunk and waterfall! Special thanks to our active crew during the week: Keli, Vicki and Jessica Nelson, Zel & Margie Terluin, Barry Rosenfeld, Sue Moorcroft, Donna Smith, John Thorngren, and Pastor Joel. It was also great to have a huge presence of our Youth group as Skye, Keegan and Payton Xiang, Joshua Gonza-lez, Ezra & Rowan Martyn led the Stampede Sports (games) and supported our younger keiki.
Moving forward, please consider how you can help at VBS 2020! We will be looking for more crew leaders and mentors to help coordinate next year’s VBS as our daughter matriculates to the Youth Group age. It is our plan to stay active with the VBS team but would like to find someone else (or two) to help lead and build upon this great ministry. Please contact us if you are interested in join-ing this awesome team!

Aloha KLC Ohana,
What a wonderful, interesting and busy month June has been. It was amazing to be a part of Vacation Bible School this year. Being able to spend time playing with and teaching the thirty or so keiki was a blessing for me. It was a fun-filled yet exhausting
week and I want to thank Phil and Stacie Proctor for taking the lead on this ministry yet again. You two have done wonderful, life-changing work for the children of KLC and the surrounding community. I also want to thank the VBS leaders; Sue Moorcroft, Donna Smith, Vicki and Keli Nelson, Jessica Nelson, Zel and Margie Turluin, John Thorngren, Barry Rosenfeld, Cate Evert, Peter and Janet Harp, Andrea Harris, the Xiong family, Rowan Martyn and Ezra Martyn for their dedication to this amazing ministry program. Also, thank you to the KLC Ohana for your donations. Without all of the KLC Ohana VBS would not have happened.
I want to echo my sermon from Sunday, June 23rd, and talk a little bit about sharing our stories. Sto-ries are powerful, which Jesus understood, and through which Jesus taught His disciples about the loving ways of God. I think about all the parables that he used to teach the disciples. And the stories that were passed down over thousands of years through the Old Testament and New Testaments about how God is always faithful and true and will never leave us or abandon us but will walk with us through our traumas and joys as we go through this life experience.
Stories, when shared, can bring about great change and major shifts in faith and culture. When we share our stories about how God has worked in our lives, it will ultimately lead to growth in the faith of the teller and the hearer, growth in relationship with others and begin to build trust and bring a community closer together. These three things are what we are looking for at KLC right now: 1. Growth in Faith, 2. Growth in our relationships, 3. Growth in our Ohana (Physical and spiritual).
I am looking for individuals from the congregation who would be interested and willing to share their faith story(ies). I have a vision of creating short, very well edited and crafted videos of members sharing their story that we can share on our website. Telling your story takes a certain amount of vulnerability and trust, and I want to respect that process. Through these short videos, my hope is that other people who visit our website will click on those story links and will walk away from that ex-perience a changed person with feelings of assurance, positivity, love, encouragement and will want to come and check us out in person on a Sunday morning. If you are one such person who is willing to share your story, please let me know. If you are a person who has experience in video editing and would like to help, you are more than welcome too.
I am looking forward to hearing your stories. You are a special community of believers and I thank God for you all.
pōmaikaʻi iāʻoe a pau Blessings on you all,Pastor Joel Martyn

PRESIDENT’S REPORTAloha KLC Ohana,
Even though most of us may be in “summer” mode, KLC and its ministries continue to flourish!
Just a few weeks ago, KLC hosted a VBS (Roar!) Camp. This ministry is such a great example of how KLC comes together and supports our community. It is true that some campers that attended VBS may be already affiliated with a church, but all left knowing that KLC is a place where they are loved. My favorite story of the week came on Friday after our closing activity. A mother of a child spoke to one of our volunteers and she expressed her sincerest thanks for our VBS. She also said that she knew her child was a “handful” and that she witnessed a change in her child’s attitude and behavior somewhere during the week. Again, the mother expressed her gratitude for what KLC provided during VBS. We may never know the full impact or be able to measure the impact of KLC ministries; but we keep trying and work hard “to share the love of God through worship and service to others.”
In a few short weeks, we will be celebrating the third anniversary of the Keiki Klothing Exchange. While we as a church may be in a period of growing and fine tuning this ministry, it is indeed another way that KLC shows its love to the broader community. Please consider ways you can support this ministry.
On Sunday, June 23rd a special congregational meeting was held to consider a facility lease proposal from the Little Hoku Montessori School. During the meeting a very hearty discussion about KLC’s role in the community occurred. In the end, the congregation voted to proceed with a lease agreement pending our attorney’s recommendation(s). This agreement will be a trial period (ten months) to determine if a longer term agreement is viable or appropriate for KLC.
It’s important to note, that this agreement is a short term agreement. Beginning as soon as December, we as a church will be evaluating the experience. I have faith that God will guide us along this process.
Finally, as many of us are traveling and are in and out of church during the summer months, please work on staying in touch with your church ohana. You can do this in several ways - read the newsletter and weekly e-blasts, check in on our Facebook and Instagram accounts. And if you find yourself in need of prayer, contact us and be rest assured KLC is here for you.

SUMMER SPECIAL MUSIC AND DANCEIf you have a gift to share, why not consider sharing with the congregation during the summer.
Our Performing Ministries are taking a summer break and it would be wonderful for us to see hidden talents in our community. If you are interested, please send an email to me at: [email protected] or the church office at [email protected] and Cate will pass it on to me.
If you are not sure what you would like to do and need help in figuring that out, I would be more than happy to assist in any way that I can.
KLC is blessed with such gifted and talented people. Thank you for your spirit and presence each Sunday as we celebrate together the love of our Lord.

MAY SECRETARY’S REPORTCouncil Meeting of June 18
Newly-elected council members were welcomed. The meeting was opened with prayer by Pastor Joel, and celebrations and concerns were shared.
The following officers to Council were elected:President – Phil ProctorVice President – Mo HottendorfTreasurer – Vicki LeeSecretary – Marilyn Hopkins
Shadi Askarian, owner of the Little Hoku Montessori School, had been invited to this meeting and gave a short presentation of her background and her plans for the school. She then answered questions from members of Council, after which she was dismissed with our thanks. A motion was passed to recommend approval of the Little Hoku Montessori School property-use lease to the con-gregation. Shadi will be asked to attend the congregational meeting which was set for June 23 af-ter worship.
Pastor and President reports were presented in writing. Vicki Lee reported that there is $18,493 in the General Fund. She requested the committees and those responsible for budget items keep their spending to only what they absolutely need. Phil reported that the Vacation Bible School fund raiser to help toward expenses brought in almost $450.Cate gave a short presentation of an easy-to-use and affordable online church directory program with an app for cell phones. Council agreed she should proceed with this directory.Keiki Klothing Exchange now has an official committee at KLC for discussion and decisions.
Pastor Joel and members of the Property Team are working on details to separate the committee into three areas: (1) church grounds; (2) church facilities; (3) parsonage.
The meeting ended at 8:38 p.m. and was closed with prayer by Phil Proctor. The next regular meeting of Council will be July 23, 2019, at 7:00 p.m.

KEIKI KLOTHING EXCHANGE (KKE)We Could Use Your Help
This once-a-month ministry is serving about 400 families across the island of Maui. People bring what they can and take what they need for their families. Clothing is available for newborns through 12 years of age and for mothers. There are also baby items, toys, shoes and books.
Keiki Klothing Exchange meets the first Saturday of every month. Here is the schedule of events starting on Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. and ending around 12:00 p.m.
Setup begins on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. when volunteers take down the chairs in the sanctuary. Can you give 1/2 hour of your time to help?
On Saturday at 9:00 people arrive with donations. These donations need to be sorted by size and gender. Sorting continues through 10:45. Can you give an hour of your time to help?
On Saturday at 11:00 the event ends and volunteers put leftovers in plastic bags, take down tables, sweep the sanctuary floor and put back the chairs for Sunday worship. Can you give 45 minutes of your time to help?
If you answered yes to any of these, please show up at the church. You will be greatly appreciated. If you could please let Mel Eisenhart know if you can help, that would be much appreciated. Mel’s contact info. Phone: 808-264-2846.
Finance UpdateOver the last several months, you’ve been hearing from me about our financial shortfall during the lean summer/early Fall months. This occurs because of the nature of our membership and attend-ance. Thanks to some people paying some or all of their pledges early, we have been maintaining our general fund balance at about $18,000.
A few months ago, Finance identified several budget items to cut or funds to use to help cover our bills during this time. At our July meeting, Finance will try to identify other areas that will help us since we have many months left before attendance picks up. That $18,000 will go quickly. Could we use assistance increasing that amount? Absolutely!!!
In addition, our available building funds are $9,770, which will cover 3.75 months of our mortgage ($2,605/month). If you’d like to help cover more months, please feel free to do so! Any amount would help and be greatly appreciated. In your giving, you can continue to designate the money as “building fund” or “mortgage.” If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
