MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTOF THE KUALA LUMPUR

LAWN TENNIS ASSOCIATIONOn behalf of the Kuala Lumpur Lawn Tennis Association, I warmly welcome all of you to the Scomi Kuala Lumpur Open Tennis Championships 2012, our premier annual event. Following last year’s success, we have sought to make this tournament even more enticing and better organized. We are pleased that the KL

Open is again recognized by LTAM as being part of the national circuit attracting valuable points for the Malaysian competitors. Together with the expected entry of many overseas players, the tournament should witness exciting tennis in all categories as competitors battle to be champion.

Continuing our efforts to attract more of our youth to play tennis as a healthy activity and a competitive sport, we have signi cantly enhanced our Tennis Carnival held on the Saturday during the Championships. Themed “Tennis Island”, children aged six through 15 will not only watch and participate in the Play+Stay Tennis Program developed by the International Tennis Federation but also engage in other fun- lled activities with tennis themes in a carnival atmosphere. Those that want to learn to play tennis can then enroll in our sponsor-supported community tennis program.

We strive to make the KL Open a tournament that caters to the needs of all our stakeholders. Feedback on our performance and constructive comment on areas for improvement are more than welcomed. Over time, we hope to ensure that the KL Open continues to attract talented players so that the standard of competition rises.

This Championships could not have been realized without the generous support of so many organizations and individuals. Our thanks go to Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur for again providing needed logistical and material support. The Scomi Group is again our title sponsor for which we are deeply grateful. We appreciate too the kind and continuing generosity of our Gold and Silver Sponsors. A special mention goes to the CIMB Bank who is our Primary Carnival Sponsor this year.

Let me express my gratitude to all the competitors, their coaches, parents and supporters, both local and foreign, for your participation and competitive spirit. Last but not least, allow me to thank the tournament’s organizing committee, the of cials and all the volunteers, too many to mention.

We hope that you will enjoy what we have organized for you, both the Championships and the Carnival. Thank you.

We, at LTAM, also hope some new stars would emerge from this newly restructured National Circuit.

Almost all States in Malaysia have suf cient courts available to run a championship of this nature and we really look forward to all State Af liates organize a proper qualifying rounds for their players so that we can see quality state players in this main draw championship. TENNIS HAS NEVER BEEN THIS MUCH FUN

The Play+Stay programme is just for kids. Children learn to play on the right size court using rackets that are perfect for small hands and balls that don’t bounce too high. And they can play anywhere. Children can enjoy Play+Stay with their friends or family at home, school and at their local tennis club – all you need is a at surface.

The KLLTA organises our Play+Stay programme primarily at the DBKL Tennis Complex in Tasik Titiwangsa on the weekends. We have three intakes at the start of each quarter with the last quarter reserved for competition between students past and present.

Complete newcomers are encouraged to attend. As the children progress through each stage their con dence grows along with their skills as they master each ball and court. Funded by the CIMB Foundation, our programmes are FREE for all, but limited to complete newcomers to the game only.

With the Play+Stay, kids learn to play tennis the right way and develop at their own pace. Developed by the International Tennis Federation, the Play+Stay program is the perfect t for kids.

Start Playing NowAre you ready to start playing in our Play+Stay programme with your friends? Here’s how you can start playing:

Step 1 Get in touch! Contact any one of our KLLTA quali ed coaches to nd out more. Please refer to the end of this section for contact details.

Why the Change? For decades, soccer, basketball, netball, rugby, cricket and many other sports introduced children to their sports through the use of smaller equipment and a reduced playing area.

Meanwhile, children learning to play tennis were doing so with the same size racket an adult would use, while playing on a full-size court the way professionals do.

So in 2010, the KLLTA introduced the Play+Stay programme – the fun and easy way to learn how to serve, rally and score. And we’re not the only ones. In the past few years more than 120 nations have adopted modi ed tennis programs, including all four Grand Slam countries.

A Stage for All Abilities

Red stage – Explore (ages 5–8)

Green stage – Encourage (ages 9+)

Orange stage – Develop (ages 8–10)

The Red stage is for beginners. The red ball is larger than a yellow ball and doesn’t bounce as high (just 25 per cent compression), making it a breeze for even the youngest players to hit it comfortably. The courts and nets used in the Red stage are much smaller and easier for kids to move around.

The ball used in the Green stage has a higher compression rate (75 per cent of a yellow tennis ball). The children play on a full-size court. Finally, when they are ready, kids graduate to the yellow ball and play on a full-size court.

After mastering the Red stage, children move on to the Orange stage where the ball bounces a little higher (50 per cent compression) and the court is a bit bigger.

A New Way to PlayAs of 1 January 2012 the ITF recommends that all 10 and under competitions and tournaments worldwide use low-compression balls and smaller courts, which are also used in our KLLTA Play+Stay programme. Please make sure that your coach is using the right equipment for your child; else nd a coach who does.

Our IntakesThe KLLTA has three intakes per year, with each intake running for a duration of 12 weeks. The students are accepted on a rst come rst serve basis and the KLLTA has the right to refuse anyone who we deem not suitable for this programme.

Details:Next Intake : 1 September to 30 November 2012 Venue : DBKL Taman Tasik Titiwangsa Tennis ComplexNumber of sessions : Four two-hour sessions held every Saturday of the month (4 sessions per month), per intake with a total of 12 sessions for the entire duration.Cost : FREEEligibilit : Kids from ages of 5 to 16 years old and never held a tennis racket .before in their life.Number of kids : We limit the intakes to no more than 50 kids. TENNIS ISLANDWHAT IS TENNIS ISLAND?In conjunction with the KL Open, we are organizing a one day Tennis Carnival dubbed the “Tennis Island”, which is supported by CIMB Bank. Our objective is to use the Carnival as a platform to promote the sport of tennis to children and young adults in a fun and engaging manner.

We had the rst Tennis Carnival last year in conjunction with the 2011 KL Open Tennis Championships. Based on our experience gain from that Carnival, we felt that the need to market tennis to the young exists and the Carnival was a good vehicle to do so. We therefore went about addressing the short-comings of that Carnival and set about organizing a much improved event this year. The KLLTA remains committed to reaching out to the youth and showing them the joys of tennis through events such as this Tennis Carnival.

For this year’s Carnival, the KLLTA have engaged professionals to plan, organize and manage the event, centered on the theme “Tennis Island”. Island Talk, which is headed by Malaysia’s very own reggae pop star, Sasi the Don., will manage the Carnival in collaboration with the Association. With Sasi’s knowledge and experience with the youth market, along with his contacts in the entertainment industry, we have put in place an attractive event for kids of all ages (adults and parents are welcome too!). A fun lled day is being planned featuring performances by top local artistes such as Caprice, Nadhirah, Prema Yin and Balan Kashmir.

The tennis courts in the indoor stadium at the National Tennis Center at Jalan Duta will be converted into a pirates’ island where lots of games and creative activities with a tennis and pirate theme will be held.

While the entertainment is designed to liven up the atmosphere, the centerpiece will be the Play+Stay exercises, drills and mini matches. Play+Stay is a holistic program developed by the International Tennis Federation (“ITF”) to enable children and young adults to quickly and enthusiastically learn the basics of tennis and start playing the game.

We hope to attract as many children as we can to come to the Carnival. More importantly, to get the children interested in tennis immediately! So do come and show your support for local tennis. Besides, it will be a great way to spend time with the kids over the weekend!

ONGOING ACTIVITIES FOR THE DAY INCLUDES• Emcee activities, games and interaction.• Guess the number of balls.• Nintendo Wii – Tennis Experience.

Our young and up and coming junior players under the elite programmes Muhd Khairil Anas, Mohd Saiful Azri, Joshua Gerard Liu, Tobias Sean Waldau, Nur Eliza Khairul, Shareena Kaur, Tan Jia Yi, Kok Zi Yu, are now in regular training with KLLTA coaches and the players own coaches, in preparation for tournaments which have been lined up for them; the Sportexcel championships at FTKL, Zone and national level tournaments.

OUR FUTURE PLANSThe KLLTA is an association with big ambitions. We want tennis to be the sport of choice for the people who are living and working in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur. The Play+Stay programme approved by the ITF is a proven methodology to make it easy and enjoyable for a copmlete beginner to learn tennis. We feel it is our duty to provide this programme to the public so that many more young children will consider tennis as one of their main sports activities.

By graduating the children at an early age from our programme, we seek to provide coaches offering their services within the city the opportunity to take them to a higher standard of play. This enables them to decide if they want to play tennis as a leisure activity or to also participate in more formal competitive activity. Since we are building a growing base of beginner players, we hope to nd a number who are keen on competition. We look to offer events at all levels that offer the opportunity for competition to take place. The KL Open Tennis Championships is the highest level of competition for the Association.

Through the many events planned, we hope to identify talented players who have the necessary skills, physical and mental strength, to be considered for representation in national and overseas tournaments. These individuals will receive additional training to prepare them for the rigors of competition at national and international level. Our aim is to raise the standard of tennis in the Federal Territory such that we will produce ATF and ITF ranked players and ultimately have players who can win their tournaments.

In order to achieve these high standards, we look to assist our Kuala Lumpur-based coaches and of cials to learn more and graduate to higher quali cations. Together with the players and their parents and supporters, we seek to roll out our plans with their active participation. By getting more people involved in all our events, we hope to grow the number of corporations that support our goals. It is the combination of all these activities that will allow us to move forward and make tennis the sport of choice for many who live and work in Kuala Lumpur.

HISTORYThe Lawn Tennis Association of Malaya (LTAM) was founded in 1925 due largely to the keenness, foresight and practical work of Mr. Justice McCabe Reay, its rst president. The LTAM was later af liated with the Lawn Tennis Association in England, which in turn was a member of the International Lawn Tennis Federation.

By 1935 the LTAM had grown to comprise (Selangor LTA, Perak LTA, Negeri Sembilan LTA, Johore LTA) and the Straits Settlement (Singapore LTA, Penang LTA, Malacca LTA). In 1937 LTAM joined the ILTF. World War 2 interrupted LTAM activities but was revived in 1948 with John A. Choon-leong became the rst President of LTAM as well as of SLTA. On the resignation of C.K. Pang as Secretary of both LTA of Malaya and Singapore LTA, the two Associations split off with the Late Mr V. Rajaratnam taking over as Secretary of LTAM.

The LTAM became an Associate Member of the ILTF in 1937 and a Full Member in 1963. The name was changed to the LTA of Malaysia in 1964 to include the other States of the new Federation of Malaysia.

State tournaments and Open Invitational both locally and internally were introduced under the guidance and rules of the Lawn Tennis Association of Malaya and later Malaysia. Such popular tournaments were the annual Malayan/Malaysian Malays Tennis Tournaments patronized and participated by the Rulers, and Governors.

Notable Rulers who participated were: H.R.H. The Sultan of Pahang, H.R.H. The Raja of Perlis, H.R.H. The Sultan of Perak, H.R.H The Sultan of Kedah, H.R.H The Sultan of Terengganu and The Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan. The Rulers were all avid and prominent tennis player who started playing tennis during their college days at home and abroad. They in turn encouraged the ordinary public to participate and play with them in tournaments.
