Children’s Bike Safety was Job #1 at the Three Rivers Kiwanis Bike Rodeoheld on Saturday, May 1st at the Milo Elementary School. Over 25 children participated in the rodeo, which included bike and rider information, helmet inspection & fitting, bike inspection & adjustments, a bike safety talk and then the bike safety road course including hand signals, turns & stops. After the completion of the course, they enjoyed a snack and entered their name for a chance on a new bike. The club gave over 20 new helmets away, of which 10 were to replace damaged or unsafe helmets. The bikes were won by Adam S. of Brownville and Lilith H. of Milo. A Fall at Any Speed Can Cause Serious Head Injuries!A bicycle helmet is headgear that is especially made to protect

your head in a fall. Bicycle helmets can reduce the risk of head injury by up to 85 percent. Most deaths related to bicycle falls

and collisions involve head injuries. This means wearing a helmet can save your life!

A fall can happen even to the most careful rider. Bicycle crashes don’t only happen in the street, they can happen in driveways, on bike paths, and on sidewalks or anywhere someone is careless. It’s as important to wear a helmet as it is to buckle up in a car!

Wear a helmet every time you ride a bike. You never know when something will happen.Source: http://www.maine.gov/dps/bhs/bicycle-safety.htmlFor more information about the Three Rivers Kiwanis visit our web site www.ThreeRiversKiwanis.org or join us at our weekly meeting every Wednesday morning at 6:30 am in Milo at the Hobnobbers located at 45 West Main Street.

The Milo Art Center was filled with Music and Entertainment

On Friday, May 7th the Three Rivers Kiwanis held their annual variety show. The annual variety show is our major fund-raiser for the RIF (Reading Is Fundamental) program in all the elementary schools, Penquis HeadStarts, and PreSchools in the SAD 41 area. On the days that we deliver the books, we also read to the children as well. It is great to see the joy and wonder on a child’s face while reading a book and let them select their own book, says President Heidi.

Many great acts performed such as: The Elementary Drama Club in a Wild West act; listen to the “Pickle Song” from Richie Russell; A hometown favorite “The Notables” performing Sandman; Magic by Zack O’Quinn; Famous Couples Sonny & Cher, Johnny & June Cash, and Elvis & Priscilla stopped by. Sue Darling played guitar and sang for us, too. The Downeast Country Music Association’s 2009 “New Country and Bluegrass Duo of the Year” New Realm; and the children of the drama club ended the show with the Goodnight Song.

Three Rivers Kiwanis, Milo-BrownvilleMay 12, 2010 Regular Morning Meeting

The meeting at Hobnobber’s was called to order at 6:45 AM, and was attended by nineteen members. We had an interclub from Dover-Foxcroft with five members, four Key Club members and one from the Builders Club.

Eben led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and George offered the morning prayer. Today is Dick Mullins’ birthday. Eighteen happy/sad dollars were collected – welcome back to George and Jan from their trip around our wonderful country and happy to be home after such a long trip; Milo Garden Club toured the Harrigan home and museum; Jim Lord feeling much better and preparing for surgery in Houston later this month; glad to see all the young people at our meeting on a day when school was closed for the students; a petition is circulating to encourage the Milo Selectmen to choose an alternate site for the recycling program; also, this topic will be discussed Tuesday March 18 @ 6:30 PM at the regular town meeting; successful Variety Show; Red Sox on a roll; Hooked on Fishing program this Saturday in D-F @ 9 AM and hopefully up and fully running this time next year in Milo; Josh out of school after completing his first year at UMO.

This was our business meeting so Heidi reported on our May Board Meeting:

Santa Project was discussed at length, and a decision was made to keep the Secret Santa Program that we had in years prior to 2009 and that Bonnie will continue to be the Chairman and final “go to person” for requests and coordination and that she will work with the Penquis Cap Program to avoid duplication and coordinate purchasing power.

Our 501C3 status is still pending; new IRS regulations are pending and holding up the process.

Upcoming Programs: May 19 and 26 – Key Club. June speaker chairmen are Jim Lord and Frank Cochrane.

Other dates to remember: June 19 the Canoe Race; June 25 and 26 the Annual Kiwanis Auction; June 27 the Cruise In. Calendar sales orders are due by June 1.

Bonnie is running a coat drive “Coats for Kids”. As we go through our closets this spring, any coats that you don’t want can be brought to a Kiwanis meeting. Bonnie will make sure they are clean and fit to be given to Milo youth next fall as needed.

Also, Bonnie is looking for donated baked goods for the Key Club bake sale at IGA on Friday May 14 at 3 PM.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:20 AM

Williams This has been a week of anticipation and new arrivals. The Maine School and Library Network (MSLN) in conjunction with Fairpoint is upgrading our internet connection. Jerry Cole, the library’s tech coordinator has been helping us with the project and we would like to express our thanks for making this a far smoother transition than would be otherwise possible. We don’t have a faster internet connection yet, but it’s on the way as the pre-installation of the plywood will testify, hence the anticipation. We are also looking forward to the start of this year’s summer reading program. It is our 25th anniversary of summer reading programs!

This year’s theme is ‘Make a Splash’ - Read. Thumbs up to Rochelle for working hard at getting it organized. Sign up week starts June 14-18 and the ‘Make a Splash’ program begins June 21st.
