When asked to submit additional comments about the design of Kiwanis Park, the top 4 com-mon themes include:

1. Programming that fosters a connection to nature

2. Retaining elements of the existing park

3. Types of programming for the park

4. Excitement for a new park

“Kiwanis is by far the best playground in Pittsboro, but could be much improved, so I am happy as a parent that it is being expanded.”

“A community garden space would be a wonderful addition.”

“Please include shaded play areas.”

Open-Ended Question Summary

“I really like the Kiwanis playground. It’s the best in the area. I especially like the artwork in the sidewalks and the music area with drums and bells.”

“Walking path would be nice with mindfulness stations along the path.”

“Please include play equipment for older children.”

“I think this would be a fantastic accommodation to Pittsboro.”

“This is such a great idea to extend this park. It will definitly be a wonderful asset to the community.”

“Sounds like a wonderful project.”

“Don’t remove the turtle!”

“The opportunity for open ended play and social interaction.”

39 Places to meet and learn how to play with and around other children, to try new things and

challenge themselves, with some shade so can be used during the summer after 9:30 am!

40 Swings 8/31/2019 5:02 AM

41 Variety/unique features from other local playgrounds. Zip lines. Slides. 8/31/2019 2:21 AM

42 My daughter enjoys looking for sticks, rocks, and leaves. She also enjoys places where she can

hang from something if it’s low to ground.

8/30/2019 6:29 PM

43 We like to go ride bikes. 8/30/2019 6:19 PM

44 Scensory stations and disability accessible 8/30/2019 5:03 PM

45 Shade, swings, splash pads 8/30/2019 4:25 PM

46 Having space to run and play with friends. Swings, slides, and the turn/twisty thing at community

playground in chapel hill.

8/30/2019 2:44 PM

47 Shade, visibility of children, variety of activities, sufficient seating 8/30/2019 2:17 PM

48 We like when a playground is accessible to younger children. That's why the Kiwanis park is our

number one playground. My one year old gets run over at other playgrounds, but the Kiwanis park

is perfect for him.

8/30/2019 1:44 PM

49 Unique play structures, well-maintained equipment 8/30/2019 1:30 PM

50 Nature, lots of slides, soft sidewalk areas (rubberized stuff), FENCES, shade, safe location, play

equipment safety

8/30/2019 1:01 PM

51 Climbing areas, sand to play in 8/30/2019 12:41 PM

52 Variety of equipment 8/30/2019 11:51 AM

53 Climbing features, and imaginative play. My son loves rock climbing, monkey bars and anything

"ninja warrior like". It does not need to look like a ninja course, he will create that with his

imagination. My daughter loves a play kitchen and cooking. They also love to play hide and seek or

tag with friends. I like enclosed areas and shade especially in the hot summer months.

8/30/2019 11:36 AM

54 Variety, shade 8/30/2019 11:06 AM

55 Outdoor play 8/30/2019 11:00 AM

56 Different areas to play, making it fun for varied ages 8/30/2019 10:20 AM

57 space for kids to run and climb 8/30/2019 10:07 AM

58 Climbing areas 8/30/2019 9:55 AM

59 Walking trails, space to host birthday parties 8/30/2019 9:54 AM

60 Splash pad play and away from main traffic 8/30/2019 9:47 AM

61 I think each playground is unique. My kids are 10, 9, 5 and 4. Rock ridge is great fun for 6+ but I

feel very isolated and on edge there. Currently Kiwanis is almost perfect for 2-5 year olds: the

fence, structure, free play, natural shade. Port a potty is an issue for potty training toddlers.

Southern Village is great fun but can get very hot. It would be nice if there was a barrier between

the older and younger section and more shade for kids and adults to take a break in.

8/30/2019 9:32 AM

62 Play structures under shaded areas and water features 8/30/2019 9:32 AM

63 Variety and unique playground equipment 8/30/2019 9:31 AM

64 Slides, safety, lots of levels and places to hide. Shade and water fountains 8/30/2019 9:23 AM

65 Nature, grassy areas, stroller accessibility 8/30/2019 9:13 AM

66 The ability for my youngest to run around freely 8/30/2019 8:51 AM

67 Nature 8/30/2019 8:49 AM

68 Soft playground turf that is connected and even. Variety of structures so kids can spread out.

Equipment that doesn’t get hot in the sun.

8/30/2019 8:46 AM

69 We love having an enclosed space where they feel free to play, but I feel safe knowing they are in

a contained area.

8/30/2019 8:41 AM

70 Fenced play areas and unique play equipment. 8/30/2019 8:37 AM

71 Me: fenced in Kids: places to climb 8/30/2019 8:33 AM

72 Soft and level grounds for little ones just learning to walk 8/30/2019 8:33 AM

73 Splash pad areas 8/30/2019 8:31 AM

74 my kids always prefer more natural play spaces (especially where items can be moved and built-

the Children's Garden of Ithaca in NY is amazing)

8/30/2019 8:28 AM

75 Wide variety of activities, zip lines 8/30/2019 8:20 AM

76 Bathrooms, picnic shelters where we can have birthday parties 8/30/2019 8:19 AM

77 Shade is very important, so we love it when playgrounds incorporate shade sails or tree canopies!

We also love unique and art-inspired playgrounds, like the giant fish playground in Saxapahaw

(and Kiwanis park, currently)!

8/30/2019 8:16 AM

78 Shady areas so not as hot. Covered area to sit and eat lunch 8/30/2019 8:06 AM

79 Safe area 8/30/2019 7:59 AM

80 we love the zip line at rock ridge partk, we love being able to climb and explore and interact with

different structures, we love specific focused activities, we love freedom to move but also be

contained. one of my kids is super creative and imaginative and doesnt need a lot to get busy,

another really could use things to help interaction like shovels for digging in the sand and structure

to help be engaged....the same would go for my experience in supporting individuals with

autism....the more structure and sense some activities make the more likely they are to play...while

we are used to have a lack of structure in play it is really vital to those on the spectrum and to

younger kids who are developing at different rates.

8/30/2019 6:28 AM

81 Unique areas. 8/29/2019 5:48 PM

82 The opportunity for open ended play and social interaction in a neutral setting 8/29/2019 5:26 PM

85 Swings designed for bigger/ older children 8/29/2019 4:48 PM

86 Safety, variety, promotion of curiosity and imagination, physical activity 8/29/2019 4:33 PM

1 thanks for expanding this great park 9/16/2019 7:35 AM

2 Best options are the novel experiences. For example, the thing my kids enjoy the most at rock

ridge is the kids zip line because no other park has it. My kids also love splash zones.

9/16/2019 7:25 AM

3 Thank you for considering. 9/12/2019 7:26 AM

4 My child is a runner who likes to explore. A great park or model that works well for us is the park in

Pittsboro near/within the Powell Place neighborhood. That is our favorite.

to explore at playgrounds.

26 When I was at the NC zoo with my daughter, she really liked a wall with chalk artwork. There was

chalk available for her to add to the permanent artwork and water brushes to wipe it away. It was a

very simple activity but she loved drawing on that concrete wall. It would be nice to have a play

wall with that. The North Carolina Zoo children's area is amazing for ideas. They also had a very

interesting texture walk and a wonderful shaded sand pit!

36 Try to keep the trees and the natural elevations in the area for kids to get used to playing on. I also

like the more natural concepts so that kids learn to figure out how to play and not have everything

spelled out for them.

9/5/2019 8:28 AM

37 Kiwanis is by far the best playground in Pittsboro but could be much improved so I am happy as a

parent that it is being expanded. It would be great to have more equipment options for both bigger

kids (larger slides and equipment), while leaving the smaller playground for littler kids. My

daughter is only 2 but is often “overrun” when there are a lot of bigger kids on the equipment.

9/4/2019 7:31 AM

38 We love Kiwanis park! It's the best parks for littles. It would be nice if it had more big kids elements

too though.

9/3/2019 6:42 PM

39 Thanks for taking community input to improve our parks! 9/1/2019 10:36 AM

40 Add shaded seated areas and a splash pad! 9/1/2019 8:51 AM

41 Nothing further, but would be nice to figure out a solution for the bugs at the park! Might not be an

ongoing thing but we definitely had a lot of bugs last time we were there. Ants if I’m remembering

42 How long will it take 9/1/2019 7:55 AM

43 Love kiwanis or the turtle park as we call it haha. We moved here from Austin and they had an

awesome play for all park. It was great for kids of any age or ability. Might be a good source of

inspiration. Rock on!

8/31/2019 5:05 PM

44 So excited! Thank you! 8/31/2019 7:53 AM

45 It would be great to have a pedestrian friendly way to get to the park, splash pad, well maintained

with accessible bathrooms

8/31/2019 7:07 AM

46 We look forward to the park becoming a reality. 8/31/2019 6:28 AM

47 All your ideas sound amazing. It would be wonderful to be able to walk on a sidewalk to the park

from Pittsboro Baptist preschool's parking lot after school.

49 Please include shades play areas, which in NC is especially helpful for younger children who can’t

be in the hot sun for any long periods of time.

8/31/2019 2:21 AM

50 The only concerns right now about the playground is the padding near the slides and swings. I also

hope to keep the playground like it is in regards to the nature play.

8/30/2019 6:29 PM

51 We we love a pump track/kid bike park. 8/30/2019 6:19 PM

52 I think this would be a fantastic accommodation to pittsboro. 8/30/2019 5:03 PM

53 Kiwanis needs more shade! It is too hot a lot of the time to use the swing and slides. 8/30/2019 4:25 PM

54 My son is no longer the age for Kiwanis park, however, we visited it quite often when he was. In

addition, I am a special needs teacher for elementary age kids... All young children will

communicate and play together - disabilities or not. It is when they get older that they form ideas

about individuals with disabilities. Acceptance needs to start at a young age...

8/30/2019 3:07 PM

55 I’d love bigger slides and climbing structures for bigger kids! 8/30/2019 2:44 PM

59 I really like the Kiwanis playground. It’s the best in the area. I especially like the artwork in the

sidewalks, the music area with drums and bells, the little slide is nice for very small kids. I think the

center area space could be better used - it needs to be a more tactile space. The ground is too

rough for crawlers so the objects should be higher up and more functional. I brought my 11 month

old in there and he just tried to eat the leaves. My 2 year old played with the wheels.

8/30/2019 1:01 PM

60 A community garden space would be a wonderful addition. 8/30/2019 12:41 PM

61 thanks for asking but the survey is my suggestions. 8/30/2019 12:14 PM

62 Thank you for providing a safe place for children to play & explore. Our grandchildren have loved

this since before they could walk & it’s a favorite place to go after pre-school.

8/30/2019 11:51 AM

63 As a neighbor to the park I worry about privacy. My back yard will face the park. I love having

access to the park, but I also worry about others having access to our home. We also have a lot of

large windows facing the park. Safety in the evenings/after hours (ensuring late night visitors are

discouraged) are also a concern. I am also worried about the traffic. I heard at the meeting that a

connection to rectory street is possible which is wonderful. But is that via a path? Or new road

construction? I would love a walking path around the park, that would be nice for children to ride

their bikes or walk/run. Thank you for your time and efforts!!

by going up the steps on the little kid side. Also there is no gate at the entrance.

78 Really happy to see this initiative and excited for the renovations and expansion! 8/30/2019 8:46 AM

79 We would love to see a water feature brought to Pittsboro. We tend to not go to the park in the

summer because of how hot it is outside. This would be a very welcome addition.

8/30/2019 8:41 AM

80 We love that Kiwanis is designed for young children. 8/30/2019 8:37 AM

81 Whatever you do, please keep the shades and the fence! It’s the best part of the “Turtle

Playground” because we can use it in the summer months when it’s hot without burning up or

worrying about kids straying too far away.
