Getting out of town : : 11

Getting out of town.

The extensive road and path network around Kitzbühel offers numerous ways to get out of town. We recommend the following routes:

Schwarzseestraße | ReithThe first choice for all tours in a northerly direction is the Schwarzseestraße. From Reith take the “standard route” via Rerobichl to St. Johann in Tirol. In a westerly direction, Ellmau and Kufstein can be reached either via Stanglwirt | Going or the Astberg mountain classification.

Brixental bike pathFor all tours in a westerly direction, the beautiful Brixental bike path is recom-mended. On this route Wörgl and the Zillertal can be reached without the stress of traffic.

RömerwegThe route along the Römerweg takes you through fantastic mountain scenery, with the Wilder Kaiser an absolute eye catcher. Passing through some of the most beau-tiful parts of Kitzbühel, past magnificent old farm houses, you encounter the first ascent!

Pass-Thurn-StraßeThe Pass-Thurn-Straße leads road cyclists towards Mittersill and Pinzgau. This route is essential for getting to the Großglockner, otherwise a ride back to Kitzbü-hel is recommended because of the volume of traffic.

Using the booklet.

Take out the page with details of the planned tour and put it in your pocket. Together with the foldable map you are now ready to go!

Kitzbühel Circuit

From the town centre follow the Schwarzseestraße in a westerly di-rection. Then turn towards Reith bei Kitzbühel (Reither Landesstra-ße) and onwards in the direction of Stanglwirt | Going. At Gasthof Reinache turn left onto the narrow Rerobichlstraße and follow the mo-derately steep route to the mountain classification at Bichlach. From the crest, its a rapid downhill until just before the centre of Obendorf, via the Dorfbachweg past the districts of Sperten und Weitau to St. Johann in Tirol. Shortly before the centre of St. Johann in Tirol turn right towards the St. Johann cable cars. Cross over the railway track, conti-

nue along the road past the Egger company on your left, then follow the beautiful hillside Römerweg. Near Oberndorf | Penzing navi-gate a few kilometres of unpaved Römerweg over a small mountain classification (Siedlung Haslach), then further along the Römerweg passing glorious farm houses. Un-der the Hornbahn lift and past the hospital, continue along the hillside. At the Traunsteinerweg go through the underpass and finally back to Kitzbühel town centre.

The short Kitzbühel “home circuit” on pretty side roads with wonderful scenery. Also suitable for families and E-bikers.

Astberg-Bichlach Circuit

From Kitzbühel town centre take the Schwarzseestraße to Reith. 400 m after the football field in Reith turn left onto the Astbergweg. From there (755 m) you make an elevation gain of about 425 metres on a quiet, nar-row road with a constant ascent (12 %) winding up the Astberg (1,180 m). Keep left at both of the two di-stinctive crossroads (“Hollenauer Kreuz” and “Sonnenlift”). Beautiful farm houses. Splendid views of the Kitzbühel mountains: the near-by Wilder Kaiser, the Kitzbüheler Horn, the Hahnenkamm and the Große Rettenstein. To the top of the pass - Bergbauernhof “Kathen” - a short and trouble free gravel track.

A rapid and winding descent to the mountain village of Ellmau (820 m). Take the side road on the right side of the valley to Going and Stangl-wirt. Then head to Reith. Before the bridge at Gasthof Reinache (722 m, km 21.7) turn onto the Astbergweg and over the “kleinen Astberg” (835 m) to Reith (762 m). In the centre of Reith turn left towards the Hotel Pointner, pass the farms “Waching”, “Kleinlehen” and “Rummeln” (850 m) and continue onto Oberndorf (Schmidboden). World-class pano-rama! Cross over the valley at the “Rass & Dorner” and follow the Rö-merweg back to Kitzbühel.

Short and sweet with light traffic, Kitzbühel’s training circuit with a hint of “Giro d’Italia”. A steep ascent to Astberg (up to 12 %) and the impressive “Best of” Kitzbühel mountain panorama!

This tour starts along the Römer-weg towards St. Johann, then con-tinues towards Fieberbrunn. After the underpass look out for the left turn to the airport and join the cy-cle path. Some glorious short and sharp ascents (a few up to15 %) to Fieberbrunn. Ride a few kilometres along the Hochkönig-Bundesstraße (B164). At the junction for the Fie-berbrunn cable cars turn right in the direction of Walchau | Dandlerau and continue as far as the Gasthof “Eiserne Hand”. Here turn left and follow the slight ascent to Hochfil-zen-Zentrum (1,000 m above sea level). From here through the War-

mingtal and along the side road to St. Ulrich, then follow the Pillersee-Landesstraße to Waidring. After about 8 km on the B178 towards St. Johann (the cycle path is very winding; it is not worth taking!) in Erpfendorf (Steinbacher insulation factory) turn right onto the state road towards Kössen. After about 1 km, and passing the bridge over the Großache, turn left onto the old state road to St. Johann. From here return to Kitzbühel through Weit-au | Sperten, Oberndorf and then Rerobichl to Reith and along the Schwarzseestraße. (see Kitzbühel Circuit No. 1).

A Kitzbühel classic. A wonderful route with some brutal climbs in the most beautiful of settings.

Kitzbüheler Horn

Ride from the centre of Kitzbühel along the Römerweg in a northerly direction and turn off at the farm “Höglern” onto the Kitzbühler Horn panoramic road. After a short while you come to the original start (791 m) of the Kitzbüheler Horn Moun-tain Bike Race. It is a good idea to take a short break here, have a look at the information board and enjoy a refreshing drink. 875 m ascent over 7.1 km on the steepest bike mountain in Austria follows. The ascent gradient is 12.5 % on ave-rage, peaking at 22.3 %. After the first toll gate (1,013 m) follow the first “ramp”. Conserve your energy

until the Goinger Alm (1,424 m) as it is here where the crucial part begins. Over 1 km with a constant ascent gradient from 16 to 22.3 %, subsequently levelling out in the last of the altogether 18 curves. The goal is the Alpenhaus (1,666 m) on the Kitzbüheler Horn. Route record holder Thomas Rohregger: “the Kitzbüheler Horn is truly the Streif of cycle sport! There are practically no rest opportunities. You have to go full power from start to finish!” Incidentally, Tommy’s racing gear ratio on the Horn is 39|27, and his best time is 28 minutes 24 seconds.

The “horn” is legendary. With gradients of up to 22.3 %, it is the steepest bi-king mountain in Austria. A truly epochal ascent. Compete against the best!

Gerlos Circuit

A long and demanding mountain stage with two passes and rapid descents. Awesome panorama with glorious views of the glacier.

From Kitzbühel town centre head along the Schwarzseestraße. As per tour number 7, head west on the Brixental bike path as far as Wörgl. Proceed through the centre of Wörgl then follow the Inn bike path past the Reintaler lakes and on into the Zillertal (Zillertal bike path). Proceed along side-roads with light traffic until you reach the access point to the Gerlos pass (1,620 m, gradients of up to 10 %) in Zell am Ziller. Reaching the top, follow the plateau (Almdorf Königsleiten) that leads to a rapid descent to the Krimml waterfalls. From Krill, eit-

her take the Pinzgau bike path or the fast-paced secondary road with little traffic towards Mittersill. At Hollersbach be sure to turn onto the bike path and go through the ham-let of Rettenbach onto the old Pass-Thurn-Straße. Here continue along an unpaved stretch (unproblematic) then turn onto the Pass-Thurn fede-ral road (B 161). Enjoy the pleasant consistent ascent (mostly well un-der 10 %) to the top of the pass (1,274 m) and the swift descent (long straights!) to Jochberg. Follow the federal road (Bundesstraße) to Kitzbühel.

From Hopfgarten along a steep but pretty mountain road (cool breeze) into the Wildschönau (Niederau) and a steep descent to Wörgl.

Around the Kitzbüheler Horn

Kitzbühel’s racing-bike classic in the Salzburger Pinzgau with the eye-catching Zellersee lake and Kitzsteinhorn.

This tour leads along the Römer-weg to St. Johann. Taking side streets and bike paths you come to Fieberbrunn, then up a moderate ascent (Gasthof Eiserne Hand) to Hochfilzen (Pass Grießen 1,000 m). After Hochfilzen join the B 164 (Hochkönigstraße) gently descen-ding to Leogang and onto Saalfel-den (744 m). In Saalfelden it’s a short stretch towards Maria Alm, then turn right onto the small se-condary road towards Gerling and onto Maishofen. Pass the Zellersee

lake on the eastern side. In Bruck an der Glocknerstraße turn onto the Tauern bike path. Go through the hamlet of Rettenbach to join the old Pass-Thurn-Straße. Here continue along an unpaved stretch (unproblematic) then turn into the Pass-Thurn federal road (B 161). Enjoy the pleasant consistent as-cent (mostly well under 10 %) to the top of the pass (1,274 m), and the swift descent (long straights!) to Jochberg. Follow the federal road (Bundesstraße) to Kitzbühel.

The small Bavaria Circuit

A wonderfully scenic tour to South Bavaria. Many small side-roads. Options to extend and combine.

From Kitzbühel town centre head west to the Schwarzsee lake, then north along the Reither Landes-straße to Gasthof Reinache and Rerobichl. In Oberndorf turn onto the side road towards Sperten | Weitau and St. Johann, after a short stretch branch off left onto the B 178 for the ascent to Gasteig to-wards Kössen. Großglockner

The “Glockner” is a highlight in life of any road cyclist. This alpine tour (2,506 m) represents the “high-point” of all Kitzbühel cycle tours.

The Glockner tour begins in Kitz-bühel town. Head south on the B 161 (Pass-Thurn-Bundesstraße) to Jochberg. It then continues con-sistently uphill to Pass Thurn (1,276 m). After a fast descent you reach Mittersill (790 m), then head east continuing along the Tauern bike path to Zell am See and Bruck an der Glocknerstraße (758 m). Here the ascent begins. Passing Fusch you reach the Ferleiten toll gate (1,115 m). Here starts the long and

difficult ascent to the Fuscher Törl (2,428 m). Maximum gradient 12 %. After numerous bends in specta-cular high alpine landscape you come to the Fuscher Törl. From here, after a short descent (Fuscher Lacke 2,275 m), you have the option to continue to the Hochtor (2,506 m). The trip back follows the same route. The descent from the Fuscher Törl is wonderful thanks to the consistent downhill gradient of no more than 10 %.

In Walchsee join the bike path (near Walchsee golf club) and continue through the hamlet of Rettenschöss on peaceful roads to Wildbichl (780 m). Cross

over the border to Sachrang. On a consistently downhill road you ap-proach Aschau im Chiemgau and Bernau am Chiemsee. Head sou-theast through Grassau and Mar-quartstein on the secondary road to Schleching and then along a small mountain road to Kössen. Continue south along the secondary road. Just before Erpfendorf turn right onto the old Landesstraße (secondary road) and follow the peaceful road through Kirchdorf and onto St. Johann. The Kitbüheler Horn became legendary in cycling during the 1970s and 1980s thanks to international mountain bike racing (“Europe’s Greatest Hill Climb Grand Prix”). In those days the “Horn” was considered the most difficult mountain test in Europe. Kitzbühel’s local mountain has been included in the Austrian cycling circuit every year since 2000.

Over the decades, international greats such as Cadel Evans (AUS), Lucien van Impe (BEL), Beat Breu (SUI), Riccardo Ricco (ITA), Wolfgang Steinmayr (AUT) and Georg Totschnig (AUT) have all earned a place on the winners’ list. The route record-holder, Thomas Rohregger, counts the Kitzbüheler Horn as one of the top 3 most difficult mountains in international cycling. Legendary Tyrolean cyclist, Wolfgang Steinmayr, also cherishes the visual charm of the “Horn”. “There exist but very few difficult mountain routes of this kind in international professional cycling with such a spectacular setting”.

“The Kitzbüheler Horn is one of the most difficult ascents in international cycling – comparable with Alpe d’Huez!”, says Tyrolean cycling legend, Georg Totschnig, on the climb to the Alpenhaus.

Every year about 10,000 hobby cyclists storm the mountain, which in Austria ri-vals only the Großglockner in terms of popularity. With the help of permanently installed timekeeping devices, riders can record their times on an annual ranking list as part of the „Krone KitzHorn Challenge“. www.kitzhornchallenge.at

Our Top 10 Kitzbühel “Climbing” Highlights.

So what makes road cycling so special in Kitzbühel? It must surely be the moun-tain passes complimented by the countless access roads into the ski regions. This infrastructure, created primarily with the winter season in mind, gives the cycling region just the right piquancy.

1 Kitzbüheler Horn (1,666 m) and the summit (1,996 m) Austria’s steepest “bike mountain”, a genuine cult mountain among cyclists. Unri-valled in steepness - both in maximum (22.3 %) and average gradients (12.5 %). Only a few other mountains around the world can surpass the toughness of the “Horn”.

2 Großglockner (2,506 m) Both the mountain peaks and mountain passes are true emblems of Austria. Every road cyclist must ride this mountain at least once in their life. An agreeable ascent gradient of 10 %, in comparison to the Kitzbüheler Horn.

3 Steinplatte (1,666 m) A serious hill-climb, resembling the Kitzbüheler Horn in terms of distance and gradient.

4 Ochsalm (1,470 m) A lovely mountain road in the Kitzbühel ski region, passing wonderful mountain pastures.

5 Enzinger Boden (1,480 m) and the Tauernmoos reservoir (2,104 m) A ride into the glacial world. A secret adventure: the unkempt but secluded road to Tauernmoos!

6 Loferer Alm (1,425 m) A typical ski region access road. A tough hill climb!

7 Griesner Alm (1,024 m) A wonderfully mellow mountain road, dignified by cycle races each year.

8 Hirschbichlpass (1,183 m) An unrivalled pass with ascent gradients of up to 30 %! The Hirschbichlpass can only be ridden out of the saddle. You couldn’t help but do a wheelie if you re-mained seated. There is nothing more to say about this pass ;-).

9 Winklmoos-Alm (1,160 m)Ski region approach road to Rosi Mittermaier’s homeland.

10 Filzensattel (1,290 m) and Dientner Sattel (1,370 m) Two delightful passes at the foot of the Hochkönig.

The ITU World Triathlon Series has been stationed in Kitzbühel for many years. The legendary sports town competes in a league made up of major cities and Olympic locations such as Sydney, London and Seoul.

Alongside professionals, around 1,000 hobby athletes from all over Europe take part in the Sprint distance (750 m swim, 20 km cycle, 5 km run) and the Olympic distance (1.5 km – 40 km – 10 km). The Kitzbühel Triathlon is regarded among the athletes and their entourage as the most beautiful and best competition on the tour. The natural landscape, refreshing marshland of the Schwarzsee and the magnificent running and cycling routes are all contributing factors. In 2014, the ETU Triathlon European Championships over the Olympic distance take place in Kitzbühel. Over 2,000 competitors are expected to compete.
