Logs placed in the streambed foster habitat for salmon. Tree Sale Edition January 2016 There is never a dull day at the Scandia Patch, located in Poulsbo along Scandia Creek. Larry Bazzell and his family, who are well known for providing fresh produce grown and sold on their farm, recognized the value of not just taking care of the land, but also the stream and fish that live in his backyard. Historically, this secon of Scandia creek was modified in ways that reduced habitat for salmon. Large concrete blocks meant to armor the bank fell into the stream chan- nel and ivy smothered out the all of the nave trees and shrubs along the stream side. The Bazzell family received a Backyard Habitat and Conservaon Commission grant to restore the creek. Eight concrete blocks were removed from the stream and replaced with 18 habitat logs. Habitat logs and pools give spawning salmon a place to rest on their arduous journey and also give salmon fry a place to hide from predators. Ivy was removed from 1.5 acres with the help of Kingston High School volunteers, and 1,480 nave trees and shrubs were planted. With Mr. Bazzell’s permission, Greg from the engineering firm, Amorterra, used a drone to as- sess the restoraon site. Salmon will have an easier me geng home thanks to the Bazzell family. There is never a dull day at the Scandia Patch, located in Poulsbo along Scandia Creek. Larry Bazzell and his family, who are well known for providing fresh produce grown and sold on their farm, recognized the value of not just taking care of the land, but also the stream and fish that live in his backyard. Historically, this section of Scandia creek was modified in ways that reduced habitat for salmon. Large concrete blocks meant to armor the bank fell into the stream chan-nel and ivy smothered out the all of the native trees and shrubs along the stream side. The Bazzell family received a Backyard Habitat and Conservation Commission grant to restore the creek. Eight concrete blocks were removed from the stream and replaced with 18 habitat logs. Habitat logs and pools give spawning salmon a place to rest on their arduous journey and also give salmon fry a place to hide from predators. Ivy was removed from 1.5 acres with the help of Kingston High School volunteers, and 1,480 native trees and shrubs were planted. With Mr. Bazzell’s permission, Greg from the engineering firm, Amorterra, used a drone to as-sess the restoration site. Salmon will have an easier time getting home thanks to the Bazzell family.

NEW THIS YEAR! Oval Leaf Viburnum (Viburnum ellipticum) is a handsome deciduous shrub native to south western Washington, western Oregon and northern California. It’s a multi-trunk rounded shrub that ranges in height from 3’ to 10’ tall and works well in many settings, from woodland gardens to hedgerows. Useful for including in any landscape for its three seasons of interest: late spring to summer blooming clusters of white flowers, red fruits and brilliant fall foliage.

Pinch Creek is a tributary to Barker Creek. Barker Creek flows into Dyes Inlet, which is closed to shellfish harvest due to pollution. Stormwater flowing into Pinch Creek from the fairgrounds stormwater pond exceeded state water quality turbidity and fecal coliform standards due to unmanaged roof runoff and surface flow. In addition, there was frequent flooding on the fairgrounds, which carried sediments and manure laden runoff into the stormwater pond.

The Common Good Stormwater Low Impact Development retrofits and farm best management practices were installed at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds to reduce runoff volume and sedi-ments, and to prevent bacteria and nutrients from contam-inating Barker Creek and Dyes Inlet shellfish beds. The improvements provided multiple opportunities for public education about Low Impact Development projects and farm management practices.Project Accomplishments: • 106,252 sqft of roof area infiltrated• 11,500 sqft of pervious asphalt road installed• 10,000 sqft asphalt areas diverted to infiltration • 127,752 sqft hard surfaces infiltrated• 3 waste storage structures constructed• Storm pond redesigned and enlarged to infiltrate in-

stead of impound.• 6 Tours of LID Practices to agencies and individuals• 360,000 people had access to educational material and

KCD workshops train new farmers on livestock production Place

Stamp Here

We are happy to announce that KCD is now a vendor for an exciting product called StabiliGrid. This is a square, easily-assembled, plastic grid that can be filled with gravel, sand, or planted with grass to create a stable surface for driving, walking, livestock, and more. It is ADA compliant and made of recycled materials. It is a great solution for muddy paddocks or over-worn driveways. The product is pervious so rainfall hitting the surface will percolate into the ground below and not run off or allow mud to be created. KCD has used

Stabiligrid on our own parking areas, as well as our storm-water projects, for many years because of its practical and environmental benefits. It has become an excellent solution to muddy paddocks and areas of heavy livestock use. Contact us if you are interested in using Stabiligrid as an environmentally safe solution for wet areas in your yard, driveway, or on your farm.

New for You...Facebook Doo for You!

As always, we’re trying to link resources within the commu-nity. For years we’ve struggled with ways to get manure from farms to the gardeners that need it. Enter technology... and our new Facebook site that allows the connection. If you are a farmer and have plenty of Doo that needs a good home, post it on the ‘DOO for YOU’ Facebook site. No need to divulge more than the general part of the county you are in and prospective composters can PM you to make a connection. Gardeners? Do the same and search for a link near your neck of the woods. Easy-peasy and we’ll all benefit by the compositng. Of course, it’s free to use, fast and easy. Find it on Facebook

The candidates must be qualified county electors and owners or operators of a farm within the Kitsap Conservation District boundaries. Call the District at 360-204-5529 to determine if you reside within District boundaries and meet the agricultural requirement.

The candidates should be qualified by training and experience to perform the specialized, skilled services required of them. Supervisors will administer by del-egating tasks through a structure of Board officers and members, committees, staff, and others; develop and maintain effective non-regulatory programs; identify local conservation and agricultural needs; and ensure implementation of the District’s plans.

Supervisors are required to regularly attend monthly district business meetings and regional or statewide association meetings and conferences. They are vol-unteers and serve without compensation. Supervisors and Districts have no land use decision or regulatory authority.

To express your interest in running for the upcoming elected position, obtain a nomination application form from the Kitsap Conservation District, 10332 Central Valley Road, Poulsbo, WA 98370. You must return the form to the Kitsap Conservation District with at least 25 signatures by February 22, 2016 to be on the ballot. The election date is to be March 25, 2016.
