Kitlocker.com – An Introduction: Kitlocker.com is a revolutionary sport and leisurewear supplier aimed predominantly at the university/academic sector. Established in 2005, Kitlocker identified a gap in the market, and to plug this gap created an online supply system offering sport specific and general leisurewear to individual university customers. (Below is the homepage of our University of Lincoln online store, we re-produce the same store for each of our university customers, integrating each institution’s branding to the site).

Kitlocker.com – The Concept:The idea behind setting up specific online stores for each of our university customers came from first hand experience of dealing with the organisation of kit orders whilst involved with the volleyball committee at Sheffield Hallam University. It was evident that the issues with administration (collecting orders, waiting for payments to clear, confirming personalisations etc) meant that the processes involved before even getting to the stage of placing orders were long-winded and admin intensive. It would then take another 2 months from point of order for most kit companies to deliver the finished items, as they generally manufactured the garments from scratch. Once received, they would then need to be distributed to the individual students and invariably there would be a spelling mistake or a sizing issue, so items would then need to be returned…thus having to restart the entire order again!

Kitlocker.com – The Benefits: It was apparent that this was a cumbersome process which was admin intensive, with lengthy delivery times. Kitlocker believed that in setting up online stores with a full range of sport-specific and general leisurewear, we could cut out all of the problems, and offer the following benefits:

Speedy turnaround times: We state that orders take between 2 and 4 weeks. Less than 0.5% of orders exceeded this for the past academic year. We are able to offer such speedy delivery times for 3 interlinked reasons; 1 – the online sites, 2 – the products we offer are sourced from manufacturers who hold items in stock, 3 – our production systems are configured for small embroidery and printing jobs.

Removing administration: As the order process is dealt with entirely online, neither the Sports Union, nor individual clubs have to waste time collating orders or cashing cheques, which has proven time consuming.

24 hour ordering: Students have the option of placing orders any time day or night; the service also means that they do not need to wait to place their order, or feel pressured into placing an order with the rest of the club.

Website: The website offers a secure and easy to use system including product images and specific details relating to sizing and materials of all products. The success we encountered with the sports teams at all of our institutions spread throughout the university, with many courses, societies and halls of residence being incorporated onto the site.

Account Support Team: You will have a dedicated Account/Production Manager to deal with the day to day running of all aspects of the service. They will also field all customer enquiries, both product and service related. They will also be responsible for all staff, and club/course bulk orders, and this will generally be done via email and telephone. Delivery times generally 2 to 4 weeks from point of order.

No minimum order quantities: With our online ordering service there are no minimum order quantities. This allows students to order throughout the year, no matter what they are purchasing.

Personalisation: All products can be personalised with students names or initials, and club/course/society.

Fitting Sessions: If the institution has a requirement for compulsory course clothing (usually PGCE, or other sports orientated courses), we offer a fitting service. Our staff will come to your university complete with a full range of products and sizes. We will generally implement an ordering ‘window’ on the site, in which all orders placed will be guaranteed for a specific date (agreed by course leaders).

Marketing: Kitlocker have developed a number of marketing techniques that run in conjunction with the website to boost awareness, and promote the products;

Promotional cards and posters can be sent for enclosure in enrolment letters, and a quantity can be left with departments and staff direct.

E-newsletters are sent out on a monthly basis to all registered users of the site, specifically offering special deals and news updates, which are effective for January sales/Varsity and any other promotions. They have also been used by Sports Unions to aid with union campaigns.

Product slides can be sent to staff, displaying the range etc for use in enrolment lectures and student intranets.


Staff Uniform: Kitlocker will gift an agreed budget of free kit staff which will be delivered prior to the beginning of term. This helps us to showcase the new range, and again increase the brand exposure.

Shipping and Delivery: As discussed with Colin and Lola we usually offer shipping to student addresses for £4.95 recorded. However most of our Universities remove this option and choose to have a central collection point within a deparment which not only solves the problem of the students missing the courier because they are working hard in uni but it also allows the department to generate cash or more staff clothing. Our suggested method for shipping is therefore that we ship to the department once per week for free but the students pay a shipping charge of £2.50. Kitlocker will then give you the £2.50 back in cash or double the amount and give you it back in clothing. So for example 100 orders will generate a staff budget of £500 staff clothing.

Distributing via a Collection Point: Each order is individually packaged with the students name, order number and contact details on the front. These orders are placed in a box along with a sheet detailing all the orders in the box. This sheet is sent electronically as well. The collection point would then call or email when they receive the box. At which point our system will notify the students that their order is available for collection. The sheet within the box has a signature sheet so that students can sign for the order and everyone has a record. It is recommended that student ID’s are presented at the time of collection.

Kitlocker.com – The Stats:An insight into the last academic period ‘08 to ’09 shows that we accrued University internet sales in excess of £220,000, comprising of 4,200 orders with over 11,300 individual products. Delivery was, on average, 19.2 days from point of order, and 0.02% of goods fell outside of the 28 day period we state as our latest delivery time. These figures illustrate that we are the market leaders in online sales and distribution of university clothing.

Branding ConceptAfter reviewing your logo I have marginally updated this and tried to make it best fit in a smart presentable manor inline with the Nike tick. Due to the technical fabric of the garments I have enclosed a heat applied embroidered logo which is my suggested method for application to the garments. We use this logo widely for all our professional football clubs and also other universities. The four different versions of the logo are shown below.

All prices are including the logo as a heat applied embroidered transfer and inclusive of VAT. Note: There will be an additional cost of £2 per item if the logo is to be embroidered directly onto the garment.
